A Gaussian Jet Model for Deriving Absolute Geostrophic Velocity from Satellite Altimetry

  • Time-mean and absolute geostrophic velocities of the Kuroshio current south of Japan are derived from TOPEX/Poseidon altimeter data using a Gaussian jet model. When compared with simultaneous measurements from a shipboard acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) at two intersection points, the altimetric and ADCP absolute velocities correlate well with the correlation of 0.55 to 0.74. The time-mean velocity is accurate to 1 cm s$^{-1}$ to 5 cm s$^{-1}$. The errors in the absolute and the mean velocities are similar to those reported previously far other currents. The comparable performance suggests the Gaussian jet model is a promising methodology for determining absolute geostrophic velocities, noting that in this region the Kuroshio does not meander sufficiently, which provides unfavorable environment for the performance of the Gaussian jet model.

Aerodynamic loading of a typical low-rise building for an experimental stationary and non-Gaussian impinging jet

  • Non-synoptic winds have distinctive statistical properties compared to synoptic winds and can produce different wind loads on buildings and structures. The current study uses the new capabilities of the WindEEE Dome at Western University to replicate a stationary non-Gaussian wind event recorded at the Port of La Spezia in Italy. These stationary non-Gaussian wind events are also known as intermediate wind events as they differ from non-stationary non-Gaussian events (e.g., downbursts) as well as stationary Gaussian events (e.g., atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) flows). In the present study, the wind loads on a typical low-rise building are investigated for an intermediate wind event reproduced using a continuous radial impinging jet (IJ) at the WindEEE Dome. For the same building model, differences in wind loads between ABL and IJ are also examined. Wind loads on different surface zones on the building, as defined in the ASCE code for design loads, are also calculated and compared with the code.

  • A numerical model is applied to analyze the mixing characteristics of an axisymmetric turbulent buoyant jet discharged into flowing stratified ambients. The numerical model is a Gaussian-vortex model which incorporates the effects of the vortex pair known as the representative characteristics of far-field in flowing ambients. Six ocean outfalls that have field data for the initial dilution at the water surface are selected for testing the applicability of the developed numerical model. The comparisons of the observed initial dilutions and the simulated ones show that the developed numerical model could be used for the analyses of the initial mixings induced by the sewage diffuser discharged into the ocean.

Insights on the rotation measure of the M87 jet on arc-second scales

  • We investigate the rotation measure (RM) of the nearby low luminosity AGN M87 by using archival polarimetric VLA data at 8, 15, 22 and 43 GHz. For the first time, the RM properties of its jet are resolved at at arc-second scales. The distribution of the RM appears to be a gaussian with a mean value of ~200rad/m2 and the power spectrum follows a power law with index -2.5. A simple Kolmogorov model assuming a random turbulent magnetic fields extrinsic to the jet appears not to be adequate to explain the observed RM power spectra. On the other hand, underlying RM gradients possibly connected with the jet could be a possible interpretation.

  • Efforts are concentrated onto effective simulation of surface discharged heat water in two-dimensional depth-averaged finite element model using Gaussian puff algorithm incorporating near-field characteristics as patches computed from CORMIX3 with ambient flow variations. Concise analyses of horizontal and vertical temperature distributions are made for real coastal power plant discharges through four field observations and the results from this proposed method are in good agreements with observations in far-field as well as near-field. Thus, this method can simulate the heat dispersion effectively for the whole region since the complex jet momentum characteristics and ambient flows are easily represented in 10 meters of finite element discretization around a discharging point.

  • The behavior of a three-dimensional pure rectangular water jet with aspect ratio of 10 was experimentally investigated based on the results of the mean velocity field obtained by PIV. The saddle back distribution was observed in the lateral distribution along the major axis. The theoretical centerline velocity equation derived from the point source concept using the spreading rate for the axisymmetric jet was in good agreement with the measured centerline velocity and gave the division of the potential core region, two-dimensional region, and axisymmetric region. The range of the two-dimensional region divided by the criterion of the theoretical centerline velocity decay for the aspect ratio of 10 was observed to be smaller than that of the transition region. The applicability of the two-dimensional model to the behavior of the rectangular jet with low aspect ratio or the wastewater discharged from a multiport diffuser in the deep water of real ocean may result in significant error in the transition and axisymmetric regions after the two-dimensional region. In the two-dimensional region, the Gaussian constant tended to be conserved, and the spreading rate slightly decreased at the end of the two-dimensional region. The normalized turbulent intensity along the centerline of the jet initially abruptly increased and showed relatively higher intensity for higher Reynolds number.

A Study on Flow Zone Development and Bottom Change by Propeller Jets from Ships (선박추진기에 의한 흐름발달과 해저면변화에 대한 연구)

  • The flow zone through propeller jets are used in evaluating the environmental and constructional effects of navigation on the waterway. It relies on the characteristics of ships and water depth. A numerical model using the momentum theory of the propeller and Shield's diagram was developed in a restricted waterway. Equations for discharge are presented based on thrust coefficients and propeller speed and are the most accurate means of defining discharge. Approximate methods for discharge are developed based on applied ship's power. Equations for discharge are as a function of applied power, propeller diameter, and ship speed. Water depth of the waterway and draft of the shop are also necessary for the calculation of the grain size of the initial motion. The velocity distribution of discharge from the propeller was simulated by the Gaussian normal distribution function. The shear velocity and shear stress were from the Sternberg's formula. Case studies to show the influence of significant factors on sediment movement induced by the ship's propeller at the channel bottom are presented.
