The existing Proxy Mobile IPv6 suffers from a long handover latency which in turn causes significant packet loss that is unacceptable for seamless realtime services such as multimedia streaming. This paper proposes an OpenFlow-enabled proxy mobile IPv6 (OF-PMIPv6) in which the control of access gateways is centralized at an OpenFlow controller of a foreign network. The proposed OF-PMIPv6 separates the control path from the data path by performing the mobility control at the controller, whereas the data path remains direct between a mobile access gateway and a local mobility anchor in an IP tunnel form. A group of simple OpenFlow-enabled access gateways performs link-layer control and monitoring activities to support a comprehensive mobility of mobile nodes, and communicates with the controller through the standard OpenFlow protocol. The controller performs network-layer mobility control on behalf of mobile access gateways and communicates with the local mobility anchor in the Proxy Mobile IPv6 domain. Benefiting from the centralized view and information, the controller caches the authentication and configuration information and reuses it to significantly reduce the handover latency. An analytical analysis of the proposed OF-PMIPv6 reactive and proactive handover schemes shows 43% and 121% reduction in the handover latency, respectively, for highly utilized network. The results gathered from the OF-PMIPv6 testbed suggest similar performance improvements.

Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks (MWSN) are usually constrained in energy supply, which makes energy efficiency a key factor to extend the network lifetime. The management of the network topology has been widely used as a mechanism to enhance the lifetime of wireless sensor networks (WSN), and this work presents an alternative to this. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a well-known technology in data center applications that separates the data and control planes during the network management. This paper proposes a solution based on SDN that optimizes the energy use in MWSN. The network intelligence is placed in a controller that can be accessed through different controller gateways within a MWSN. This network intelligence runs a Topology Control (TC) mechanism to build a backbone of coordinator nodes. Therefore, nodes only need to perform forwarding tasks, they reduce message retransmissions and CPU usage. This results in an improvement of the network lifetime. The performance of the proposed solution is evaluated and compared with a distributed approach using the OMNeT++ simulation framework. Results show that the network lifetime increases when 2 or more controller gateways are used.
In Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs), we usually deploy multiple Internet Gateways (IGWs) to improve the capacity of WMNs. As most of the traffic is oriented towards the Internet and may not be distributed evenly among different IGWs, some IGWs may suffer from bottleneck problem. To solve the IGW bottleneck problem, we propose an efficient scheme to balance the load among different IGWs within a WMN. Our proposed load-balancing scheme consists of two parts: a traffic load calculation module and a traffic load migration algorithm. The IGW can judge whether the congestion has occurred or will occur by using a linear smoothing forecasting method. When the IGW detects that the congestion has occurred or will occur, it will firstly select another available IGW that has the lightest traffic load as the secondary IGW and then inform some mesh routers (MPs) which have been selected by using the Knapsack Algorithm to change to the secondary IGW. The MPs can return to their primary IGW by using a regression algorithm. Our Qualnet 5.0 experiment results show that our proposed scheme gives up to 18% end-to-end delay improvement compared with the existing schemes.
Full-mesh IPSec tunnels pass through a black ("unsecure") network (B-NET) to any red ("secure") networks (RNETs). These are needed in military environments, because they enable dynamically changing R-NETs to be reached from a BNET. A dynamically reconfiguring security policy database (SPD) is very difficult to manage, since the R-NETs are mobile. This paper proposes advertisement process technologies in association with the tunnel gateway's protocol that sends 'hello' and 'prefix advertisement (ADV)' packets periodically to a multicast IP address to solve mobility and security issues. We focus on the tunnel gateway's security policy (SP) adaptation protocol that enables R-NETs to adapt to mobile environments and allows them to renew services rapidly soon after their redeployment. The prefix ADV process enables tunnel gateways to gather information associated with the dynamic changes of prefixes and the tunnel gateway's status (that is, 'down'/restart). Finally, we observe two different types of performance results. First, we explore the effects of different levels of R-NET movements on SP adaptation latency. Next, we derive the other SP adaptation latency. This can suffer from dynamic deployments of tunnel gateways, during which the protocol data traffic associated with the prefix ADV protocol data unit is expected to be severe, especially when a certain tunnel gateway restarts.
