A 2-loop waste heat recovery system with Rankine steam cycles for the improvement of fuel efficiency of gasoline vehicles has been investigated. A high temperature loop(HT loop) is a system to recover the waste heat from the exhaust gas, a low temperature loop(LT loop) is for heat recovery from the engine coolant cold relatively. This paper has dealt with a layout of a LT loop system, the review of the working fluids, and the design of the cycle. The design point and the target heat recovery of the LT boiler, a core part of a LT loop, has been presented and analytically investigated. Considering the characteristics of the cycle, the basic concept of the LT boiler has been determined as a shell-and tube type counterflow heat exchanger, the performance characteristics for various design parameters were investigated.
In recent days, photochemical smog due to the rapid industry development and vehicle increasement has become a critical pollutant in the metropolitan area and the number of ozone alarm signal has increased every year. This research was performed to evaluate VOCs emission source characteristics and concentration of VOCs in Daegu. The site average concentration was observed in the following order: industrial area > commercial area > residential area. Most of the VOCs species except toluene showed variations with higher concentration during nighttime, and lower concentration during the daytime. The major VOCs of stationary emission source were BTEX(benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene. xylene) and methylene chloride, trichloroethene and styrene. Also, those of automobile exhaust were toluene and benzene. Also, the major VOCs concentration emited by the vehicle fuel was observed in the following order: gasoline > light oil > liquefied petroleum gas (L.P.G). Correlation coefficients values were estimated between major VOCs such as toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xylene, o-xylene. Results showed that correlation coefficient values were significant magnitude above 0.76. Also, there showed highly significant correlations among ethyl benzene, m,p-xylene, and o-xylene concentration(Pearson correlation coefficients, r=0.868-0.982). Calculated correlation coefficients among commercial area, industrial area and residential area were 0.934-0.981, they showed high correlation. There showed highly correlation between stationary emission source and industrial area, compared with commercial area and residential area. Also, calculated correlation coefficients among commercial area, industrial area, residential area and automobile exhaust were 0.732, 0.725, 0.777, respectively.
Hydrogen features highest energy density per mass and is expected to be desirable as a fuel of HALE(High altitude long endurance) UAV(Unmanned aerial vehicle). A reciprocating internal combustion engine is known to be a reliable and economic power source for this kind of UAV. Therefore, the combination of hydrogen and engine is worth of doing research. Test bench with 2.4L Spark-Ignited engine was prepared for the experiment in which start and combustion characteristics at idle condition were examined in this study. Stable hydrogen supply system and a universal ECU(Engine control unit) were also utilized for the test engine. Equivalence ratio and spark timings at idle operation were investigated and compared to the data of gasoline engine. The results will be a starting point for full-scale research of hydrogen engine for HALE UAV.
Liquefied petroleum gas is regarded as a promising alternative fuel as it is eco-friendly, has good energy efficiency and output performance, practically and has high cost competitiveness over competing fuels. In spark-ignition engine, direct injection technology improves engine volumetric efficiency apparently and operates engine using the stratified charge that has relatively higher combustion efficiency. This study designed a combustion chamber equipped with visualization system by applying gasoline direct injection engine principle. In doing so, the study recorded and analyzed ignition probability and flame propagation process of spark-ignited direct injection LPG in a digital way. The result can contribute as a basic resource widespread for spark-ignited direct injection LPG engine design and optimization extensively.
Natural gas is attracting attention as an alternative to existing fossil fuels. Natural gas has a high octane number. Therefore, knocking does not occur even if the compression ratio is increased, so that the thermal efficiency and the output can be improved. And it is relatively easy to apply the natural gas supply system to the internal combustion engine hardware system. In this study, a gasoline direct injection turbo engine was converted into a natural gas port injection type turbo engine. Therefore, the combustion and performance of the engine are measured and compared comprehensively in the region where the turbo operates.
In many countries, there are needs of new transportations to replace ground congestions due to growing number of cars. In addition, the increase in the number of cars held by economic growth will further increase traffic congestion in the future. To overcome this problem, many researches have been performed for personal air vehicle (PAV). In this study, the wing loading and the power-to-weight ratio that are major design parameters for the sizing of roadable PAVs were calculated for different kinds of airfoil and engine types. I.e., in the sizing process, the study was conducted to determine the design point using the graphs of wing loading, power-to-weight ratio, brake horse power, and fuel efficiency for the given mission profiles considering domestic environments and the FAR PART 23 which is the GA class aircraft certification standard. As a result of sizing, using diesel engine require high maximum take-off weight, wing area, and power compared to gasoline engine due to more engine weight.
Diesel engines have important advantages over its gasoline counterpart including high thermal efficiency, high fuel economy and low emissions of CO, HC and $CO_2$. However, NOx reducing is more difficult on diesel engines because of the high $O_2$ concentration in the exhaust, marking general three way catalytic converter ineffective. Two method available technologies for continuous NOx reduction onboard diesel engines are Urea-SCR and LNT. The implementation of the Urea-SCR systems in design engines have made it possible for 2.5l and over engines to meet the tightened NOx emission standard of Euro-6. In this study, we investigate the characteristics of NOx reduction with respect to engine speed, load, types of catalyst and the $NH_3$/NOx ratio and present the conditions which maximize NOx reduction. Also we provide detailed experimental data on Urea-SCR which can be used for the preparation for standards beyond Euro-6.
The worldwide focus on reducing the emissions, fuel and lubricant consumption in T-GDI engines is leading engineers to consider the crankcase ventilation and oil mist separation system as an important means of control. In today's passenger cars, the oil mist separation systems mainly use the inertia effect (e.g. labyrinth, cyclone etc.). Therefore, this study has investigated high efficiency cylinder head-integrated oil-mist separator by using a compact multi-impactor type oil mist separator system to ensure adequate oil mist separation performance. For this purpose, engine dynamometer testing with oil particle efficiency measurement equipment and 3D two-phase flow simulation have been performed for various engine operating conditions. Tests with an actual engine on a dynamometer showed oil aerosol particle size distributions varied depending on operating conditions. For instance, high rpm and load increases bot only blow-by gases but the amount of small size oil droplets. Submicron-sized particles (less than 0.5 ㎛) were also observed. It is also found that the impactor type separator is able to separate nearly no droplets of diameter lower than 3 ㎛. CFD results showed that the complex aerodynamics processes that lead to strong impingement and break-up can strip out large droplets and generate more small size droplets.
The purpose of this study is to use machine learning to build a model capable of predicting the flash boiling spray characteristics. In this study, the flash boiling spray was visualized using Shadowgraph visualization technology, and then the spray image was processed with MATLAB to obtain quantitative data of spray characteristics. The experimental conditions were used as input, and the spray characteristics were used as output to train the machine learning model. For the machine learning model, the XGB (extreme gradient boosting) algorithm was used. Finally, the performance of machine learning model was evaluated using R2 and RMSE (root mean square error). In order to have enough data to train the machine learning model, this study used 12 injectors with different design parameters, and set various fuel temperatures and ambient pressures, resulting in about 12,000 data. By comparing the performance of the model with different amounts of training data, it was found that the number of training data must reach at least 7,000 before the model can show optimal performance. The model showed different prediction performances for different spray characteristics. Compared with the upstream spray angle and the downstream spray angle, the model had the best prediction performance for the spray tip penetration. In addition, the prediction performance of the model showed a relatively poor trend in the initial stage of injection and the final stage of injection. The model performance is expired to be further enhanced by optimizing the hyper-parameters input into the model.
The objective of this study was to develop an effective separation and quantification method for kerosene and diesel in a mixed petroleum fuel (gasoline, kerosene, and diesel) contaminated environmental samples. This investigation was directed to prove the hypothesis that if the source of petroleum fuels were identical, the peak-area ratios of a reference n-alkane to other n-alkane peaks should be a constant even at the different concentrations. In addition, experimental recovery rates were determined to select the reference peaks of kerosene and diesel for peak area ratio measurements. The experimental results showed that the peak area ratios were constant among the samples having different concentrations when the ratios were calculated from areas of $C_{l3}$, $C_{l4}$, and $C_{15}$ peaks for kerosene and $C_{l6}$ and $C_{l7}$ peak for diesel as reference n-alkane peaks. The recovery rates were evaluated by comparing the relative peak area ratios of each reference peaks after making pairs of the kerosene and diesel reference peaks in the samples contained a known amount of gasoline, kerosene, and diesel. The recovery rates(%) Were 107.0$_{{\pm}20.6}$/86.6/ sub $\pm$15.9/ for kerosene- $C_{13}$/diesel- $C_{16}$, 99.6$\pm$$_{17.2}$/86.6$_{{\pm}15.9}$ for kerosene- $C_{14}$/diesel- $C_{16}$, 73.9/$\pm$14.4//86.6$_{{\pm}sub 15.9}$ for kerosene- $C_{15}$ /diesel- $C_{16}$, 109.4$_{{pm}0.8}$/75.9$_{{pm}4.7}$ for kerosene- $C_{13}$/diesel- $C_{17}$, 107.4$_{{pm}7.9}$/75.9$_{{pm}4.7}$ for kerosene- $C_{14}$/diesel- $C_{17}$, and 95.7$_{{pm}4.6}$ /75.9/$\pm$14.6//75.9$_{{pm$}4.7}$ for kerosene- $C_{15}$ /diesel- $C_{17.}$ The above experimental results confirm that all of the reference peak pairs of kerosene and diesel are applicable to the quantitative analysis for the mixed fuel contaminated samples, but the kerosene- $C_{15}$ /diesel- $C_{l7}$ peaks are recommended since the pair has a lower standard deviation than the other pairs.s..s.s.s..s..s.s.s.s.s.
