Nonlinear Acoustic-Pressure Responses of Oxygen Droplet Flames Burning in Gaseous Hydrogen

  • A nonlinear acoustic instability of subcritical liquid-oxygen droplet flames burning in gaseous hydrogen environment are investigated numerically. Emphases are focused on the effects of finite-rate kinetics by employing a detailed hydrogen-oxygen chemistry and of the phase change of liquid oxygen. Results show that if nonlinear harmonic pressure oscillations are imposed, larger flame responses occur during the period that the pressure passes its temporal minimum, at which point flames are closer to extinction condition. Consequently, the flame response function, normalized during one cycle of pressure oscillation, increases nonlinearly with the amplitude of pressure perturbation. This nonlinear response behavior can be explained as a possible mechanism to produce the threshold phenomena for acoustic instability, often observed during rocket-engine tests.

  • In recent semiconductor manufacturing clean rooms, air washers are used to remove airborne gaseous contaminants such as $NH_3$, SOx and organic gases from the outdoor air introduced into clean room. In the present study, an experiment was carried out to examine the improvement of removal efficiency for the gaseous contaminants. In order to improve the gas removal efficiency, a hot water contact heat exchanger was installed upstream of the air washer to heat and humidify the incoming outdoor air before entering the air washer.

  • Although fireside corrosion of heat transfer surfaces in coal fired steam generators has been a problem to some extent for a number of tears, with the advent of low NOx firing systems these surfaces can be exposed to conditions that will exacerbate wastage rates. Numerous reports of waterwall wastage in coal fired boilers have appeared in the literature. It is believed that wastage results both from gaseous phase attack of metal surfaces and from deposition of ash and unburned fuel. Gaseous phase attack is known to occur in the presence of reducing sulfur species such as $H_2S$ and in the presence of fuel chlorine. The highest wastage rates are thought to be due to deposition of unoxidized material and the presence of fuel chlorine. Localized wall and near wall conditions that may exacerbate wastage include reducing conditions, high temperatures, high heat fluxes, and a high fraction of unoxidized material deposited. So, this study is directed at developing an advanced corrosion model in coal-fired utility boilers.

  • The organization of phospholipid monolayers on a water surface was investigated by means of Maxwell-Displacement-Current(MDC)-Measuring technique. The phase transition from the gaseous phase to the gaseous-fluid phase which accompanies the polar ordering of lipid molecules was detected by the technique in the range of immeasurable low surface pressure and the molcular-area which gives the onset of the transition was determined for lipid monolayers. The vertical component of dipole moment of lipid membranes was determined from the charge flowing the rough the circuit, and we measured differential themal analysis of sample.

  • The objective of the present study is to conduct model combustion tests for various injectors to identify their combustion stability characteristics. Three different double swirl coaxial injectors with variation of a recess length have been tested for the comparative study of CH flame structure and dynamic characteristics. Gaseous oxygen and mixture of gaseous methane and propane have been employed for simulating actual propellants used for a full-scale thrust chamber. Upon test results, the direct comparison between various types of injectors can be realized for the selection of the best design among prospective injectors.

황해 직선 항로상 대기오염물질의 측정 (Shipboard Measurements of Air Pollutants across the Yellow Sea)

  • Air pollutants were measured eight times from June 1999 to June 2002 on regular ferries cruising across the Yellow Sea between Incheon in Korea and Qingdao or Tianjin in China. PM$_{10}$ and PM$_{2.5}$ were measured as particulate matters and SO$_2$, CO, and NO$_{x}$ were measured as gaseous pollutants. On each route, sampling was made, starting two hour after departure and ending two hour before arrival. Low concentrations of gaseous pollutants that were not much varied according to sampling period and location revealed that atmosphere over the sea was not directly affected by anthropogenic emissions. However, concentrations of fine particles were generally higher than those measured at Deokjeok Island, 50km west of the western seashore, at similar periods. It was believed that considerable influence of China in the form of secondary pollutants was exerted over the sea.a.a.a.
