Carbonation Behavior of Lightweight Foamed Concrete Using Coal Fly Ash

  • The purpose of this study was to prepare lightweight foamed concrete by mixing coal fly ash of circulating fluidized bed combustion(CFBC) with cement, and to develop uses for recycling by analyzing carbonation behavior resulting from a change in conditions for pressurized carbonation. For concrete, CFBC coal fly ash was mixed with Portland cement to the water-binder ratio of 0.5, and aging was applied at room temperature after 3 days of curing at $20^{\circ}C$, RH 60%. For carbonation, temperature was fixed at $60^{\circ}C$ and time at 1 h in the use of autoclave. Pressures were controlled to be $5kgf/cm^2$ and the supercritical condition of $80kgf/cm^2$, and gas compositions were employed as $CO_2$ 100% and $CO_2$ 15%+N2 85%. In the characteristics of produced lightweight concrete, the characteristics of lightweight foamed concrete resulting from carbonation reaction were affirmed through rate of weight change, carbonation depth test, air permeability, and processing analysis for the day 28 specimen. Based on these results, it is concluded that the present approach could provide a viable method for mass production of eco-friendly lightweight foamed concrete from CFBC coal fly ash stabilized by carbonation.

AKARI NEAR-INFRARED SPECTROSCOPIC SURVEY FOR COMETARY VOLATILES

  • We performed a spectroscopic survey for cometary volatiles with the Infrared Camera onboard the Japanese infrared satellite AKARI. The observations were carried out in the near-infrared wavelength range in the period from 2008 June to 2010 January. In this paper, we summarize the observations and results of the AKARI survey for the mixing ratios of major volatiles in comets. We derived the $2.5-5{\mu}m$ spectra of 18 comets including both Oort cloud comets and Jupiter-family comets. Prominent emission bands in the observed spectra are the fundamental vibrational bands of water ($H_2O$) at $2.7{\mu}m$ and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) at $4.3{\mu}m$. The fundamental vibrational band of carbon monoxide (CO) at $4.7{\mu}m$ and the broad emission feature probably related to C-H bearing molecules can also be recognized around the $3.4-3.5{\mu}m$ region in some comets. We detect $CO_2$ in 17 out of 18 comets, and derived gas production rate ratios of $CO_2$ with respect to $H_2O$ in 17 comets. We detect a reliable CO emission band only in three of the comets. Our data set provides the largest homogeneous database of $CO_2/H_2O$ ratios in comets obtained so far.

Evaluating Effective Volume and Hydrodynamic Behavior in a Full-Scale Ozone Contactor with CFD Simulation (전산유체역학을 이용한 실규모 오존 접촉에서의 수리거동과 유효 체적 평가에 관한 연구)

  • An Ozone reaction model combined with CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) technique was developed in this research, in the simulation of ozonation, hydrodynamic behavior as well as reaction model is important because ozone is supplied to treated water as gas ozone. In order to evaluate hydrodynamic behavior in an ozone contactor, CFD technique was applied. CFD technique elucidated hydrodynamic behavior in the selected ozone contactor, which consisted of three main chambers. Three back-mixing zones were found in the contactor. The higher velocities of water were observed in the second and third compartments than that in the first compartment. The flow of the opposite direction to the main flow was observed near the water surface. Based on the results of CFD simulation, the ozone contactor was divided into small compartments. Mass balance equations were established were established in each compartment with reaction terms. This reaction model was intended to predict dissolved ozone concentration, especially. We concluded that the model could predict favorably the mass balance of ozone, namely absorption efficiency of gaseous ozone, dissolved ozone concentration and ozone consumption. After establishing the model, we discussed the effect of concentration of gaseous ozone at inlet, temperature and organic compounds on dissolved ozone concentration.

Study on preparation of precipitated calcium carbonate using recycling water of ready-mixed Concrete (레미콘 회수수를 이용한 침강성 탄산칼슘 제조에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, a liquid carbonation method was applied for producing precipitate calcium carbonate by liquid-liquid reaction. Also a shuttle mechanism of wet chemical absorption using MEA was utilized. The high concentration $CO_2$(A) and exhaust gas(B) was used for collecting carbon dioxide in the 30% MEA aqueous solution, and $CO_2$ was fixed with rate of 0.35 mg of $CO_2$ per mg of sludge through the liquid carbonation process. It was found from SEM data that calcium carbonate was mainly made up with spherical vaerite with the mixing of a small quantity of calcite.

  • Local heat/mass transfer and friction loss in a square duct roughened with various types of continuous and discrete rib turbulators are investigated. The combined effects of the gap flows of the discrete ribs and the secondary flows are examined for the purpose of the reduction of thermally weak regions and the promotion of the uniformity of heat/mass transfer distributions as well as the augmentation of average heat/mass transfer. The rib-to-rib pitch to the rib height ratio (p/e) of 8 and the rib angles of 90 and 60 deg are selected with $e/D_{h}=0.08$. The vortical structure of the secondary flows induced by the parallel angled arrays are quite distinct from that induced by the cross angled arrays. This distinction influences on heat/mass transfer and friction loss in all the tested cases. The gap flows of the discrete ribs reduce the strength of the secondary flows but promote local turbulence and flow mixing. As a result, the fairly uniform heat/mass transfer distributions are obtained with two row gaps.

  • Development of a small gas-turbine combustor for 100kW class APU(Auxiliary Power Unit) has been performed. This combustor is a reverse-annular type and has a tangential swirler in the liner head to improve the fuel/air mixing and flame stability. Three main and three pilot fuel injectors of the simplex pressure-swirl type are used. The performance target at the design condition includes a turbine inlet temperature of 1170K, a combustion efficiency of 99%, a pattern factor of 30%, and an engine durability of 3000 hours. Under developing the combustor, we conducted performance test of our first prototype(TS1) with some variants. As a result of the test, the performance targets of the combustor are satisfied except that the pattern factor is about 4% higher than target value. So, we redesigned the second prototype(TS2) and conduct performance test with the critical focus on pattern factor and exit mean temperature. We adopted TS2 four variant to check the improvement of pattern factor. As the result, the pattern factors of several variants were satisfied with the performance target. Finally, We chose the TS2A variant as a final combustor for our APU model.

  • (Ba,Sr)TiO3(BST) thin film is an attractive material for the application in high-density dynamic random access memories (DRAMs) because of the high relative dielectric constant and small variation in dielectric properties with frequency. In this study, (Ba0.6,Sr0.4)TiO3 thin films on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates were deposited by a sol-gel method and the CF4/Ar inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching behavior of BST thin films had been investigatedby varying the process parameters such as chamber pressure, ICP power, and substrate bias voltage. To analysis the composition of surface residue following etching BST films etched with different Ar/CF4 gas mixing ratio were investigated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and secondary ion mass spectrometer (SIMS).

  • The performance in the practical combustion system including reciprocating engines and gas turbine combustors is being much governed by turbulent reacting flow that is often analyzed by both a laminar flamelets concept and flame interaction. The characteristics of laminar flame interaction have been investigated numerically to provide basic understanding of wrinkled turbulent flames under concentration interaction resulting from inhomogeneity in fuel-air mixing, especially focused on the transition of flame characteristics such as diffusion flame, partially premixed diffusion flame, and triple-layer flame by the variation in the degree of premixedness. The extinction stretch rates to the premixedness have also been obtained in this paper. The boundary defining the regime of the existence of triple-layer flames as functions of both stretch rate and premixedness has been determined which agrees well with previously reported experiment measuring OH radical concentration peaks based on PLIF.

  • A DC thermal plasma system has been designed and constructed to obtain diamond films from a mixture of CH4 and H2. The effects of the deposition conditions such as substrate temperature ($850^{\circ}C-1050^{\circ}C$), gas mixing ratio (0.5-1.5% CH4 in H2), chamber pressure (50 - 200 Torr), axial magnetic field (0 - 900 Gauss) on the diamond film properties such as morphology, purity of the film and deposition rate, etc. have been examined with the aids of Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-Ray Diffraction and Raman Spectroscopy. Under optimum conditions, high quality diamond films can be obtained with high deposition rate (>$1{\mu}m/min$). Both of the growth rate and' particle size increased with the substrate temperature but the morphology changed from the faceted to unshaped when the temperature deviates its proper range. Furthermore, higher growth rates of $1.5{\mu}m/min$ can be obtained by applying an axial magnetic field to plasma torch. The observed values of interplanar spacings of diamond were in a good agreement with the values reported in ASTM data and all deposits have the diamond peak of $1332.5\;cm^{-1}$ in the Raman Spectra.

  • The output energy of Rh-6G dye laser was enhanced by the energy transfer in the mixture of Rh-6G and C-545. The laser was pumped by coaxial flashlamp filled argon gas. The optimum concentration of Rh-6G was $10_-4mol/l$ without mixing. The output energy was enhanced about 70 % at 0.4 % C-545 mixture with respect to the concentration of Rh-6G. The peak output power and the output energy were 27 kW and 50 mJ at the pumping energy of 346 J.
