  • In case of the limitation of Deep RIE fabrication for Micro Gas Turbine, bearing aspect ratio is limited in very small value. The characteristics such as pressure distribution load capacity and non-linearity of a short bearing of L/D=0.083 and a conventional bearing of L/D=1.0 with coupled boundary effects are investigated far Micro Gas Tlubine bearings. The coupled efffect was analyzed by mass conservation at coupled end area. The results, increasing load capacity and non-linearity due to the coupled effect of thrust and journal bearing, are obtained and the selection of journal bearing type is discussed.

  • An investigation is carried out for the load capacity characteristics of the externally pressurized air lubricated journal bearings both theoretically and experimentally. Theoretical analysis is made using the incremental method and the finite element method, and the discharge coefficient is considered. The experiments are performed for five bearings which are produced according to the rows of supply holes and the presence of poket or step. The results are compared with the numerical results. The present numerical results are in better agreement with the available experimental results than any other earlier numerical results for the bearings having one row and two rows of supply holes with pocket. The present numerical and experimental results show that the bearing with step has larger load capacity than that without step and that the load capacity increases as the clearance ratio increases.

  • Rolling contact ball bearings are utilized almost exclusively for liquid propellant rocket engine turbopump. Turbopump ball bearings are required to endure high speed and high load for a poor lubricated condition in cryogenic environment. To evaluate bearing heat generation performance, friction torque is investigated as a function of rotation speed, bearing load and cooling flow rate through an experimental study using water coolants. Radial and axial loads are simultaneously applied to the test bearing by gas pressurized cylinder rod. Endurance performance of bearing has been also verified under the bearing required load for operating condition during total accumulated test time 2,100 sec.

  • Most turbo machines, which operate at high speeds, such as gas turbines, jet engines, pumps, and compressors are prone to perrturbing vibrations. The best vibration control method for rotors is to eliminate destabilizing factors. Careful balancing application of "more stable" oil-lubricated bearing, such as tilting pad bearings or use of anti-swirl devices in seals, are examplse of passive vibration control methods. the use of magnetic bearing is an active control method. An obvious advantage of active control is that it provides damping (or modifies system stiffness or other parameters) only when there is a need for that, i.e., in emergency states, while not affecting the rotor normal operational conditions. Moreover, active control methods provide exact position control through on-line control. In this study, a magnetic actuator, digital contrliier using DSP, and bipolar operational power supply/amplifiers were developed to show the effectiveness of reducing robot vibration. Also the curve fitting procedure to obtain the transfer function of frequency dependent component was developed. Results presented in this dissertation will provide a well-defined technical parameters in designing magnetic damper system.er system.
