The instability analysis of submerged gas flow into liquid is studied, which assumes gas and liquid as viscous and irrotational. At low mass flow rate of gas, injected gas plume is collection of bubbles, and increase of gas flow rate makes plume as a jet. It is well known that the transition from bubbling to jetting occurs in the transonic region. But previous works neglect viscous effect of gas flow into liquid. This paper concerns about an application of viscous potential flow theory in cylindrical gas flow into liquid. The growth rate versus wave number and mach number is compared with various condition including inviscid and viscous flow.

The characteristics of gas-liquid Taylor (Slug) flow in a square micro-channel of $600{\sim}600{{\mu}m}$ were investigated experimentally in this paper. The test fluids were nitrogen and water. The liquid and gas superficial velocities were 0.01~3 m/s and 0.1~3 m/s, respectively. Bubble and liquid slug length, bubble velocity, and frequency were measured by analyzing optical images using a high speed camera. Bubble length decreased with higher liquid flow rate, which increased dramatically with higher gas flow rate. However, slug length did not vary with changes in inlet liquid conditions. Additionally, bubble velocities and frequencies increased with higher liquid and gas flow rates. It was found that measured bubble lengths were in good agreement with the empirical models in the existing literature, but slug lengths were not.

Microgravity experiments were conducted to determine the effect of liquid and gas superficial velocities on flow behaviors. Flow behaviors observed under microgravity conditions can be classified into five flow patterns: bubble. Taylor bubble, slug, semi-annular and annular flows. Transition boundary between four flow patterns could be determined by drift-flux model. It was also found that the effect of gravity and pipe inclination on flow pattern transition was not significant in the inertia dominant region.
RoeM and AUSMPW+ schemes are two of the most accurate and efficient schemes which are recently developed for the analysis of single phase gas dynamics. In this paper, we developed two-phase versions of these schemes for the analysis of gas-liquid large density ratio two-phase flow. We adopt homogeneous equilibrium model (HEM) using mass fraction to describe different two phases. In the Eulerian-Eulerian framework, HEM assumes dynamic and thermal equilibrium of the two phases in the same computational mesh. From the mixture equation of state (EOS), we derived new shock-discontinuity sensing term (SDST), which is commonly used in RoeM and AUSMPW+ for the stable numerical flux calculation. The proposed two-phase versions of RoeM and AUSMPW+ schemes are applied on several air-water two-phase test problems. In spite of the large discrepancy of material properties such as density, enthalpy, and speed of sound, the numerical results show that both schemes provide very satisfactory solutions.

A flow visualization technique was developed to analyze flow distribution inside a dishwasher in this study. Then, a new design plan was proposed to improve the efficiency of the dishwasher by the analyzed results and it was confirmed experimentally by the developed technique. Gas flow fields inside a drying duct of a tub for a drying process was investigated by a developed PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) and a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) method. Also, the flow visualization technique was developed for the liquid flow field of a rotor-arm system to propose the improved design idea. Also, interactions between liquid and gas were observed around the rotor-arm system. The two-phase flow was modified to the liquid flow field because laser sheets are refracted when pass through the two-phase flow. Thus, the flow visualization techniques was developed in this study to measure the instantaneous flow velocities in the liquid quantitatively.
It is well known that drag reduction in single phase liquid flow is affected by polymer material, molecular weight, polymer concentration, pipe diameter, and flow velocity. Drag reduction in two phase flow can be applied to the transport of crude oil, phase change system such as chemical reactor, pool and boiling flow, and to present cavitation which occurs in pump impellers. But the research of drag reduction in two phase flow is not sufficient. The purpose of the present work is to evaluate the drag reduction by measuring pressure drop, void fraction whether polymer is added in the horizontal two phase system or not. Experiment has been conducted in a test section with 24 m of the inner diameter and 1,500 mm of the length. The used polymer materials are two kinds of polyacrylamide[PAAM] and co-polymer[A611P]. The polymer concentration was varied with 50, 100 and 200 ppm under the same experimental conditions. Experimental results were shown that the drag is higher reduced by co-polymer rather than polyanylamide.
In the present experimental study, the effect of interfacial tensions on pressure drop of air-water two-phase flow in round mini-channels was investigated. A glass (highly wettable) tube and a Teflon (poorly wettable) tube, both in 350 mm length but 1.8 mm and 1.59 mm in inner diameters each, were used for the tests. All the experiments were performed only in the plug flow regime, confirmed by visualization. In the glass tube, the gas plugs were surrounded by the liquid film along the inner periphery. On the other hand, the inner wall remained dry at the gas portion in the Teflon tube. The pressure drop of the plug flow in the Teflon tube without the liquid film) appeared much larger than in the glass tube (with the liquid film) due to dissipation of energy by movement of the wetting lines. In this paper, various correlations on the two-phase pressure drop of plug flows were compared and a modified correlation was proposed, taking account of the surface wettability.
A mathematical formulation based on two-phase, two-fluid hyperbolic conservation laws is developed to investigate propagation of shock waves in one- and two-dimensions. We used a high resolution upwind scheme called the split-coefficient matrix method. Two extreme cases are computed for validation of the computer code: the states of a pure gas and a pure liquid. Computed results agreed well with the previous experimental and numerical results. It is studied how the shock wave propagation pattern is affected by the void fraction in the two-phase flow. The shock structure in a two-phase flow turned out, in fact, much deviated from the shape well known in the gas only phase.

In the present study, a PIV measurement and image processing technique were applied in order to investigate the flow characteristics in the gas injected liquid bath. The circulation of liquid was induced by upward bubble flow. Due to the centrifugal force, the flow was well developed near both wall sides than in the center of a bath. The vortex flow irregularly repeated generation and disappearance which helped to accelerate the mixing process. The bubble rise velocity in the bottom region was relatively lower than in the upper region because the energy generated by bubbles' behavior in the region near the nozzle was almost converted into kinetic energy But bubble rise velocity increases with the increase of the axial distance since kinetic energy of rising bubbles is added to buoyancy force. In conclusion, the flow increased bubble rise velocity and the flow of the bottom region became more active.

Generally, the phase of the refrigerants that circulate in air-conditioning systems is repeatedly changed from liquid to gas and from gas to liquid. In vapor-compression refrigeration, the refrigerant at the inlet of the evaporator is in a gas-liquid two-phase state; therefore, to enhance the heat-transfer performance of the evaporator, the even distribution of the refrigerant across multiple passages of the evaporator is essential. Unlike the distribution of a single-phase refrigerant, multi-phase distribution requires further considerations. It is known that the multi-phase distribution at the outlet of the distributor is affected by factors such as the operating condition, the distributor's shape, and the insertion depth of the outlet pipes; here, the insertion depth of the outlet pipes is especially significant. In this study, for a cylindrical distributor with a 90-degree bend entrance and three outlet pipes, the flow uniformity at the outlet pipes was numerically tested in relation to variations of the insertion depth of the outlet pipes.
