  • In this study, the effect of turbine geometry on the overall performance of a gas turbine was investigated by computational fluid dynamics. Overall engine performance was predicted through a full engine simulation program which can predict the interactions of the compressor, the combustor and the turbine. The compressor and the turbine analysis code solves 2D and 3D Navier-Stokes equations respectively. The chemical equilibrium code was applied to simulate the combustor. The computations were performed for two different shapes of turbine nozzle. The nozzle shapes adopted a baseline blade and a blade with fillet.

  • We developed a general purpose program for the analysis of flows in a gas turbine combustor. The program uses non-staggered grids based on finite volume method and the cartesian velocities as primitive variables. We calculated a flow inside the C-type diffuser to check the boundary fitted coordinate. The velocity profiles at cross section agree well with experimental results. We calculated turbulent diffusion flame behind a bluff body for the combustion simulation. Simulation shows two recirculating region like experimental results. Simulated velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, temperature and concentration distribution agree well with experimental data. Finally, simulation of axisymmetric flows with swirl shows two recirculating region like experimental results.

  • This paper describes a methodology and results for the analysis of a small steam injected gas turbine cogeneration system. A performance analysis program for the gas turbine engine is utilized with modifications required for the model of steam injection and the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). The object of simulation is a simple cycle gas turbine engine under development which adopts a centrifugal compressor. The analysis is based on the off-design operation of the gas turbine and the compressor performance map is utilized. Analyses are carried out with the injection ratio as the main parameter. The effect of steam injection on the power and efficiency of gas turbine and cogeneration capacity is investigated. Also presented is the variation in the main operating parameters inside the HRSG. Remarkable reduction in NOx generation by steam injection is confirmed. In addition, it is observed that for the 100% power operation the temperature of the cooled first nozzle blade decreases by 100.deg. C at full steam injection, which seems to have a favorable effect on the engine life time.

  • In this study, performance modeling and simulation of a gas turbine engine, a constituent module, was performed for the integrated control of the CODOG structure, mechanical propulsion systems. The engine model used MATLAB/Simulink to facilitate integration with the host controller and other components, and was configured to enable input/output settings suitable for the system configuration and purpose. In general, engine manufacturers do not provide performance data for the engine and components. Therefore, as a modeling method for a gas turbine, a CMF method that obtains performance data by scaling the map of components was applied. Using the generated model and simulation program, steady-state and dynamic simulation analysis tests were performed, and reliability within 5% of the maximum error was secured for the final output of power.

  • A steady-state and dynamic simulation program for a small multi-purpose turboshaft engine with the free power turbine was developed. In order to reduce developing cost, time and risk, a turbojet engine whose performance was well-known was used for the gas generator, and life time was improved by replacing turbine material and by using Larson-Miller curves. The component characteristic of the power turbine was derived from scaling the gas generator turbine. Equilibrium equations of mass flow rate and work were used for the steady-state performance analysis, and the Constant Flow Method(CMF) was used for the dynamic performance simulation. The step fuel scheduling was carried out for acceleration in the dynamic simulation. Through this simulation, it was found that the overshoot of the turbine inlet temperature exceeded over the compressor turbine limit temperature.

  • A performance simulation program for the turboprop engine (PT6A-62), which is the power plant of the first Korean indigenous basic trainer KT-1, was developed for performance prediction, development of an EHMS (Engine Health Monitoring System) and the flight simulator. Characteristics of components including compressors, turbines, power turbines and the constant speed propeller were required for the steady state and transient performance analysis with on and off design point analysis. In most cases, these were substituted for what scaled from similar engine components'characteristics with the scaling law. The developed program was evaluated with the performance data provided by the engine manufacturer and with analysis results of GASTURB program, which is well known for the performance simulation of gas turbines. Performance parameters such as mass flow rate, compressor pressure ratio, fuel flow rate, specific fuel consumption and turbine inlet temperature were discussed to evaluate validity of the developed program at various cases. The first case was the sea level static standard condition and other cases were considered with various altitudes, flight velocities and part loads with the range between idle and 105% rotational speed of the gas generator. In the transient analysis, the Continuity of Mass Flow Method was utilized under the condition that mass stored between components is ignored and the flow compatibility is satisfied, and the Modified Euler Method was used for integration of the surplus torque. The transient performance analysis for various fuel schedules was performed. When the fuel step increase was considered, the overshoot of the turbine inlet temperature occurred. However, in case of ramp increase of the fuel longer than step increase of the fuel, the overshoot of the turbine inlet temperature was effectively reduced.

  • The aircraft targeted in this study is a vertical take-off and landing aircraft with 4 to 5 passengers, and the propulsion system for the aircraft is a distributed hybrid propulsion system that uses a gas turbine engine and a battery pack as the main power source to supply the power required by multiple motors. In this study, a design/analysis platform for a hybrid propulsion system was developed using the MATLAB/Simulink program based on the preliminary design results. Through simulation analysis, the output characteristics and operating range of each power source according to the mission profile were confirmed, and through this, the feasibility of the preliminary design result was confirmed.

  • An intelligent performance diagnostic program using the Neural Network was proposed for PW206C turboshaft engine. It was selected as a power plant for the tilt rotor type Smart UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) which has been developed by KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute). The measurement parameters of Smart UAV propulsion system are gas generator rotational speed, power turbine rotational speed, exhaust gas temperature and torque. But two measurement such as compressor exit pressure and compressor turbine exit temperature were added because they were difficult each component diagnostics using the default measurement parameter. The performance parameters for the estimate of component performance degradation degree are flow capacities and efficiencies for compressor, compressor turbine and power turbine. Database for network learning and test was constructed using a gas turbine performance simulation program. From application results for diagnostics of the PW206C turboshaft engine using the learned networks, it was confirmed that the proposed diagnostics could detect well the single fault types such as compressor fouling and compressor turbine erosion.
