Cold start driving cycles exhibit an increases in friction losses due to the low temperatures of metal components and media compared to the normal operating engine conditions. These friction losses are adversely affected to fuel economy. Therefore, in recent years, various techniques for the improvement of fuel economy at cold start driving cycles have been introduced. The main techniques are the upward control of coolant temperature and the fast warm-up techniques. In particular, the fast warm-up techniques are implemented with the coolant flow-controlled water pump and the WHRS (waste heat recovery system). This paper deals with an effect of fast ATF (automatic transmission fluid) warm-up on fuel economy using a recovery system of EGR gas waste heat in a diesel engine. On a conventional diesel engine, two ATF coolers have been connected in series, i.e., an air-cooled ATF cooler is placed in front of the condenser of air conditioning system and a water-cooled one is embedded into the radiator header. However, the new system consists of only a water-cooled heat exchanger that has been changed into the integrated structure with an EGR cooler to have the engine coolant directly from the EGR cooler. The ATF cooler becomes the ATF warmer and cooler, i.e., it plays a role of an ATF warmer if the temperature of ATF is lower than that of coolant, and plays a role of an ATF cooler otherwise. Chassis dynamometer experiments demonstrated the fuel economy improvement of over 2.5% with rapid increase in the ATF temperature.

The heating system for apartment complex may be classified as old systems including central system with steam boiler(S1), gas engine driven heat pump system(S2), system using waste heat(S3) and new systems including mechanical vapor re-compression system with flashing heat exchangers(S4), system using methanol(S5), system using metal hydride (S6). The purpose of the present study is to suggest optimal heating system by technically, economically and environmentally evaluating old and new heating systems of apartment complex from 500 to 3,000 households. Economic evaluation based on the technical evaluation results which estimated heat transfer area of heat exchangers and capacity of equipments was estimated initial investment cost, annual operating cost and relative payback period by considering annual increasing rates of energy cost and interest. Environmental evaluation provided annual generation rate of carbon dioxide. Initial investment cost was cheap in the order of S6, S5, S3, S2, S4, S1, annual operating cost was cheap in the order of S1, S2, S4, S5 and relative payback period was short in the order of S6, S5, S2, S3 and S4. Relative payback period was within 8 years for all scenarios of 3,000 households, and was increased as annual increasing rates of energy cost and interest were increased. As transportation pipe length was increased twice, payback period was increased by 1.4~2.6 time. The effect of temperatures of waste gas and waste water on the relative payback period was small within 0.8 years. The annual generation rate of carbon dioxide was big in the order of S4, S2 and S1. S4 was the most economic system among whole scenarios when S1 was replaced with other scenarios.
The condensation heat transfer coefficients of R-22 and R-410A in a small diameter tube were investigated. The main components of the refrigerant loop consist of a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flowmeter, an evaporator (preheater), and a condenser (test section). The test section consists of smooth, horizontal copper tube of 3.38 mm outer diameter and 1.77 mm inner diameter. The refrigerant mass fluxes varied from 450 to $1050\;kg/(m^2s)$ and the average inlet and outlet qualities were 0.05 and 0.95. The main results were summarized as follows : the condensation heat transfer coefficient also increases with increasing mass flux and quality. The condensation heat transfer coefficient of R-410A was slightly higher than that of R-22. Most of correlations proposed in the large diameter tube showed significant deviations with experimental data except for the ranges of low quality and low mass flux.

The electric heat pump requiring HCFCs as a refrigerant has been for most residential air-conditioners in Korea. They cause a surge up electric power demand during summer. Moreover, the use of HCFCs and HFCs causes a serious problem to the global environment such as global warming and ozone layer destruction. An absorption chiller and heater could solve such problems. It was built and tested for analyzing the performance of the absorption chiller/heater. Experiment was done with a 1.5RT household absorption chiller and heater. It was experimented that the cooling capacity, gas capacity, COP were researched by the temperature of cooling water. The change of the cooling water temperature have effect the temperature(or pressure) of the parts on absorption chiller The result of the change of the cooling water temperature have the effects of the absorption chillers. This data will help to operate the household absorption chiller and heater.
In this study, the characteristics of flow in outdoor unit were numerically analyzed. Parametric studies were performed to compare the effect of bell mouth height, fan height and fan width concerned with flow rate. The result indicated that the flow rate was dependent on the bell mouth height, while it was negligibly affected by the fan height and fan width. The fan width was found to affect the velocity distribution at heat exchanger face.
Liquid hydrogen (LH2) has a higher density than gaseous hydrogen, so it has high transport efficiency and can be stored at relatively low pressure. In order to use efficient bulk hydrogen in the industry, research for the LH2 supply system is needed. In the high-pressure hydrogen station based on LH2 currently being developed in Korea, a heat exchanger is used to heat up supercritical hydrogen at 700 bar and 60 K, which is pressurized by a cryogenic high-pressure pump, to gas hydrogen at 700 bar and 300 K. Accordingly, the heat exchanger used in the hydrogen station should consider the design of high-pressure tubes, miniaturization, and freezing prevention. A helical heat exchanger generates secondary flow due to the curvature characteristics of a curved tube and can be miniaturized compared to a straight one on the same heat transfer length. This paper evaluates the heat transfer performance through parametric study on the distance between coils, guide effect, and anti-icing design of helical heat exchanger. The helical heat exchanger has better heat transfer performance than the straight tube exchanger due to the influence of the secondary flow. When the distance between the coils is uniform, the heat transfer is enhanced. The guide between coils increases the heat transfer performance by increasing the heat transfer length of the shell side fluid. The freezing is observed around the inlet of distribution tube wall, and to solve this problem, an anti-icing structure and a modified operating condition are suggested.

A low capacity generator converted to high capacity of 40m3 is designed and developed in order to use the hydroxy gas in the steel manufacturing process. For efficient design, it is increased from 8 electrode tubes to 10 electrode tubes as well as expanding the diameter of cell integument up to two times bigger, which can increase the amount of hydrogen occurrence per a cell significantly. In addition, circulating pump and pipe, heat exchanger of affiliated SUS material have been used in the circulation of electrolysis catalyst, and circulating cooling section and piping design are also developed. The flame trap is designed into all-in-one suitable check valve in the flow rate of 28-35m3/h and its application is possibly applied in work operation. It is found that the efficiency of generator developed is enhanced substantially up to 84%. It is expected that the application in this field can be expanded significantly by this study.

This study was performed to improve mechanical properties of rotor and bushing materials. SACD and SKD11 steels as rotor and bushing materials were investigated. Gas nitriding and TiN coating were carried out on SACM and SKD11 steels. TiN coating was deposited on SKD11 steel by reactive sputtering process. This coated layer was picked off during the operation because of insufficient adhesion. Gas nitriding was carried out on SACM and SKD11 steels in an ammonia atmosphere at 51$0^{\circ}C$ for 72 hrs. These gas nitrided parts showed good mechanical properties. SKD11 steels were heat-treated to obtain optimum carbide size and distribution. As a results, the hardness increased.
Generally, the generation methods of cooling energy are electric air conditioning (EAC) and gas air conditioning (GAC). The EAC system is caused by increasing peak power during summer. Because the electric energy has a characteristic of non-storage, the peak electric load has been issued social problem annually whether the facility to supply is enough or not. Another way to supply cooling energy, GAC system is worked by gas energy. The absorption chiller and gas engine heat pump have been commercialized for cooling. However, the total capacity of GAC is much less than EAC and it almost depends on EAC for small market. This paper described the status of cooling energy consumption in domestic and expected the cooling energy to be consumed by electric and gas energy up to 2024 year. And also the benefit of GAC was analyzed with the case of its expansion and it was aimed to give background to fit the GAC policy.
