In adsorption/catalytic process, numerical analysis has been performed to identify the flow characteristics of flue gas in the cyclone and to estimate the residence time of activated carbon using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique. To consider flue gas and activated carbon particles simultaneously, Euler-Lagrangian model was employed so that residence time could be obtained from the numerical analysis directly. The numerical analysis has been performed with different three particle sizes and compared each flow characteristics with particle’ size. Fundamental flow patterns of flue gas and activated carbon particles, pressure distribution, residence time of flue gas, and activated carbon particles and distribution of activated carbon have been obtained from the numerical analysis.
Recently, as the fine dust is increased and the emission regulations of diesel engines are strengthened, interest in diesel soot filtration devices is rapidly increased. In particular, there is a demand for technology development for higher efficiency of diesel exhaust gas after-treatment devices. As part of this, many studies conducted to increase the exhaust gas treatment efficiency by improving the flow uniformity of the exhaust gas in the DPF and reducing the pressure drop between the inlet and outlet of disel particle filter (DPF). In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was performed when exhaust gas flows into the canning reduction device equipped with a 13" asymmetric DPF in order to maintain the flow uniformity in the diesel exhaust system and reduce the pressure. In particular, a study was conducted to find the geometry with the smallest pressure drop and the highest flow uniformity by simulating the DPF I/O ratio, exhaust gas temperature, inlet-outlet pressure and flow uniformity according to the geometry and hole size of distributor.
This paper presents the effects of different operating parameters on the performance of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell by a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. The effects of different operating parameters on the performance of PEM fuel cell studied using pure hydrogen on the anode side and air on the cathode side. The various parameters are temperatures, pressures, humidification of the gas steams and various combinations of these parameters. In addition, geometrical and material parameters such as the gas diffusion layer (GDL) thickness and porosity as well as the ratio between the channel width and the land area were investigated.
This study explores the numerical analysis method of fluid dynamics in the reaction section to improve the gas processing efficiency in the hazardous gas removal by atmospheric thermal plasma. This study also intends to contribute in technology advance to improve the processing efficiency and make the process more stable. Numerical analysis of temperature distribution in the reaction section dependent on the change in flow velocity of Ar and plasma temperature change, which are major control variables in the cracking process of HFC-23 using arc plasma, was done. The characteristic of incoming oxygen by temperature suggested that when temperature increased to 1600K, 1700K, 1800K respectively, the range of cracking temperature 1500K increased to 75.0%, 83.3%, 90.2% respectively. The temperature change of Ar by velocity change was widest in the area higher than 1500K when the velocity was 2.5m/s; however, since there was no big difference when the velocity was 2m/s, it is believed that 2 m/s would be most proper.
In conventional machining, the use of cutting fluid is essential to reduce cutting heat and to improve machining quality. However, to increase the performance of cutting fluids, various chemical components have been added. However, these chemical components during machining have a negative impact on the health of workers and cutting environment. In current machining, environment-friendly machining is conducted using MQL (minimum quantity lubrication) or cryogenic air spraying to minimize the harmful effects. In this study, the injection nozzle that can combined injecting minimum quantity lubrication(MQL) and cryogenic gas was designed and the shape optimization was performed by using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) and design of experiment(DOE). Performance verification was performed for the designed nozzle. The diameter of the sprayed fluid at a distance of 30 mm from the nozzle was analyzed to be 21 mm. It was also analyzed to lower the aerosol temperature to about 260~270K.
Fuel lean reburning method is very attractive way in comparison with conventional reburning method for reducing NOX. Meanwhile, the knowledge of the how flue gas re-circulated, temperature distribution and species concentration is crucial for the design and operation of an effective fuel lean reburning system. For this reason, numerical analysis of fuel lean reburning system is a very important and challenge task. In this work, the effect of fuel lean reburn system on NOX reduction has been experimentally and numerically conducted. Experimental study has been conducted with a 15kW lab scale furnace. Liquefied Petroleum Gas is used as main fuel and reburn fuel. To carry out numerical study, the finite-volume based commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code FLUENT6.3 was used to simulate the reacting flow in a given laboratory furnace. Steady state, three dimensional analysis performed for turbulent reactive flow and radiative heat transfer in the furnace.
KEPCO(Korea Electric Power Corporation) is performing the nation's first biogas-MGT project as an effort to encourage the utilization of wasted biogas which contains useful CH4. The goals of this project are to develop the Pretreatment system of Livestock bio-gas and set up the biogas-MGT co-generation system. The project will not only utilze flared biogas as precious energy but also improve the economics of the plant a lot. The pretreatment system mainly consists of sulfur removal tower, biogas compressor and many filtering systems. A computational fluid dynamics study in the bio gas sulfur removal tower and sulfur absorption filter was carried out. Understanding of the flow in the sulfur removal tower and sulfur adsorption filter obtained by this study can be used to identify the problems in the sulfur removal tower and to improve the sulfur removal efficiency of the sulfur removal tower. Resistance material modeling is used to simulate the sulfur adsorption filter, and the resistance coefficient was adjusted to reflect the experimental pressure loss value. And the pressure loss change with the flowrate is predicted
The combined cycle plant is an integration of gas turbine and steam turbine, combining the advantages of both cycles. It recovers the heat energy from gas turbine exhaust to use it to generate steam. The heat recovery steam generator plays a crucial role in combined cycle plants, providing the link between the gas turbine and the steam turbine. Simulation of the performance of the HRSG is required to study its effect on the entire cycle and system. Computational fluid dynamics has potential to become a useful to validate the performance of the HRSG. In this study a solver has been implemented in the open source code, OpenFOAM, for combustion simulation in the heat recovery steam generator. The solver is based on the steady laminar flamelet model to simulate detailed chemical reaction mechanism. Thereafter, the solver is used for simulation of HRSG system. Three cases with varying fuel injections and gas turbine exhaust gas flow rates were simulated and the results were compared with measurements at the system outlet. Predicted temperature and emissions and those from measurements showed the same trend and in quantitative agreement.
Cyclone separators are widely used for cleaning gas streams or for catalyst recovery. For many years, the complexity of the gas flow pattern in cyclones has been a matter of many experimental and theoretical work. At present, precise flow measurements have been performed by means of LDA and hot-wire anemometry (Patterson and Munz, 1996; Hoekstra et al., 1999; Peng et al., 2002). In the theoretical work, Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes are frequently employed for simulating cyclone gas-particle flows(Hoekstra et al., 1999). (omitted)
