  • The heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics associated with the gas cooling of the supercritical carbon dioxide in a horizontal tube have been investigated experimentally. This problem is of particular interest in the design of a gas cooler of cooling systems using $CO_2$refrigerant. The test section is consisted of 6 series of 455 mm in length, 4.15 mm ID copper tube, respectively. The effects of the inlet temperature, pressure and mass flow rate on the heat transfer and pressure drop of $CO_2$in a horizontal tube is studied in detail. The heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$is varied by temperature, inlet pressure, and mass flow rate of $CO_2$. This has maximum value at near the pseudocritical temperature. The pressure drop is changed by inlet pressure and mass flow rate of $CO_2$. The results have been compared with those of previous work. The heat transfer correlation at the supercritical gas cooling process is also suggested.

  • The heat transfer performance of a multi-heat-source fluidized bed heat exchanger was analyzed. The fluidized bed heat exchanger examined in this study can simultaneously recover the waste heat from gas, water vapor, and hot water. The effects of waste water flow rate, gas flow rate, and cooling water flow rate were examined to find their experimental correlations with the heat transfer coefficient. A computer program using the correlations was developed in this study to predict the thermal performance of the fluidized bed heat exchanger. The calculated heat transfer rates of gas, water vapor, waste water, and cooling water were compared with the measured values. It was found that the error of the calculated values was less than 12%.

  • The cooling heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of $CO_2$(R-744) in helical coil copper tubes were investigated experimentally The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flow meter. a pre-heater and a inclined helical coil type gas cooler (test section). The test section consists of a smooth copper tube of 2.45 and 4.55mm inner diameter The refrigerant mass fluxes were varied from 200 to $600 [kg/m^2s]$ and the inlet pressures of 9as cooler were 7.5 to 10.0 [MPa]. The heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ in helical coil tubes increase with the increase of mass flux and gas cooling pressure of $CO_2$. The pressure drop of $CO_2$ in the gas cooler shows a relatively food agreement with those Predicted by Ito's correlation developed for single-phase in helical coil tubes. Though a few correlation available with the data. the local heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ agrees well with those presented by Pitla et al. among the predictions. However at the region near pseudo-critical temperature. the experiment data indicate higher values than the Pitla et al. correlation.

  • The characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop have been investigated experimentally during gas-cooling process of carbon dioxide. The results of this study are useful information in the design of a heat exchanger of $CO_2$ refrigerator. The test section consists of 6 series of copper tube, 4.15 and 2.18mm ID, respectively. The inlet temperature, the operating pressure, and the mass flux are varied in the range of $80{\sim}120^{\circ}C,\;{7\sim}10MPa,\;and\;400{\sim}1,900kg/m^2s$, respectively. The heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ is affected by temperature, inlet pressure, and mass flux of $CO_2$. At the maximum HTC, the temperature of $CO_2$ nearly accords with the psuedocritical temperature. It is found that the pressure drop is substantially affected by mass flux and inlet pressure of $CO_2$ . The results have been compared with those of previous work. The heat transfer correlation at the gas-cooling process has been also suggested which predicts within the error of 20%.

  • The heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop during 9as cooling process of $CO_2$ (R744) in a helically coiled copper tube with the inner diameter of 4.55 mm and outer diameter of 6.35 mm were investigated experimentally. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump. a mass flow meter a pre-heater and a helically coiled type gas cooler (test section). The refrigerant mass fluxes are varied from 200 to $800kg/m^2s$ and the inlet pressures of gas cooler are 7.5 to 10.0 MPa. The heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ in a helically coiled tube are higher than those in a horizontal tube. The Pressure drop of $CO_2$ in the gas cooler shows a relatively good agreement with those predicted by Ito's correlation developed for single-phase in a helically coiled tube. The local heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ agrees well with the correlation by Pitla et al. However. at the region near pseudo-critical temperature. the experiments indicate higher values than the Pitla et al correlation. Therefore, various experiments in helically coiled tubes have to be conducted and it is necessary to develop the reliable and accurate prediction determining the heat transfer and pressure drop of $CO_2$ in a helically coiled tube.

  • Numerical simulations are performed to investigate the turbulent convective heat transfer of the supercritical carbon dioxide flows in vertical and horizontal square ducts. The gas cooling process at the supercritical state experiences a sudden change in thermodynamic and transport properties. This results in the extraordinary variations of the heat transfer coefficients in the supercritical state, which are much different from those of single or two phase flows. Algebraic second moment closure which can include the effects of large thermophysical property variations of carbon dioxide and of buoyancy is employed to model the Reynolds stresses and turbulent heat fluxes in the governing equations. The previous correlations for the turbulent heat transfer coefficient for the supercritical carbon dioxide flows couldn't reflect the buoyancy effect. The present results are used to establish a new heat transfer coefficient correlation including the effects of large thermophysical property variation and buoyancy on in-duct cooling process of supercritical carbon dioxide.

  • The heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of $CO_2$(R-744) during gas cooling Process of carbon dioxide in a horizontal tube were investigated experimentally and theoretically. The experiments were conducted without oil in the refrigerant loop. The main components of the refrigerant loop consist of a receiver. a variable-speed pump. a mass flowmeter, an evaporator. and a gas cooler(test section). The main components of the water loop consist of a variable-speed Pump. an constant temperature bath. and a flowmeter. The gas cooler is a counterflow heat exchanger with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and water flowing in the annulus The test section consists of smooth, horizontal stainless steel tube of 9.53 mm outer diameter and 7.75 mm inner diameter. The length of test section is 6 m. The refrigerant mass fluxes were 200 ~ 300 kg/($m^2{\cdot}s$) and the inlet pressure of the gas cooler varied from 7.5 MPa to 8.5 MPa. The main results were summarized as follows : The predicted correlation can evaluated the R-744 exit temperature from the gas cooler within ${\pm}10%$ for most of the experimental data, given only the inlet conditions. The predicted gas cooley capacity using log mean temperature difference showed relatively food agreement with gas cooler capacity within ${\pm}5%$. The pressure drop predicted by Blasius estimated the pressure drop on the $CO_2$ side within ${\pm}4.3%$. The predicted heat transfer coefficients using Gnielinski's correlation evaluated the heat transfer coefficients on the $CO_2$ side well within the range of experimental error. The predicted heat transfer coefficients using Gao and Honda's correlation estimated the heat transfer coefficients on the coolant side well within ${\pm}10\;%$. Therefore. The predicted equation's usefulness is demonstrated by analyzing data obtained in experiments.

  • The presence of a non-condensable gas can considerably reduce the level of condensation heat transfer. The non-condensable gas effect is a primary concern in some passive systems used in advanced design concepts, such as the Passive Residual Heat Removal System (PRHRS) of the System-integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor (SMART) and the Passive Containment Cooling System (PCCS) of the Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (SBWR). This study examined the capability of the Multi-dimensional Analysis of Reactor Safety (MARS) code to predict condensation heat transfer in a vertical tube containing a non-condensable gas. Five experiments were simulated to evaluate the MARS code. The results of the simulations showed that the MARS code overestimated the condensation heat transfer coefficient compared to the experimental data. In particular, in small-diameter cases, the MARS predictions showed significant differences from the measured data, and the condensation heat transfer coefficient behavior along the tube did not match the experimental data. A new method for calculating condensation heat transfer coefficient was incorporated in MARS that considers the interfacial shear stress as well as flow condition determination criterion. The predictions were improved by using the new condensation model.

The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and a inclined helical coil type gas cooler (test section). The test section consists of a smooth copper tube, which is specified as the inner diameter of 4.55 mm. The heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ in the inclined helical coil tubes increase with the increase of mass flux and gas cooling pressure of $CO_2$. The pressure drop of $CO_2$ in the gas cooler shows relatively good coincidence with those predicted by Ito's correlation developed for single-phase in a helical coil tube. The local heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ is well coincident with the correlation by Pitla et al. However, at the region near pseudo-critical temperature, the experiments indicate higher values than the Pitla et al. correlation.
