The purpose of this study was to characterize the aromas of rose tea and rosehip tea. Aroma compounds were extracted by simultaneous distillation and extraction method using a Likens and Nickerson's extraction apparatus. The concentrated aroma extracts were analyzed and identified by GC and GC-MS. Thirty-eight compounds, including phenylethyl alcohol, citronellol, menthol, menthone, linalool and geraniol, were isolated and identified in rose tea. Thirty-six compounds, including menthol, $\alpha$-anethole, $\alpha$-terpinolene, menthone, linalool and 6-methyl-5-heptene-2-one, were isolated and identified in rosehip tea. Large amounts of phenyl ethyl alcohol and citronellol were found in rose tea, while large amounts of menthol and $\alpha$-anethole were found in rosehip tea.
Volatile aroma concentrates of four oyster mushrooms cultivated in Korea were obtained by the simultaneous distillation-extraction method. The volatile components were identified by the combined capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and compared with the of retention data on GC of those authentic compounds. About 54 volatile compounds were identified in each of the four edible oyster mushrooms. The main compounds in Pleurotus ostreatus ASI 201 were 1-octen-3-ol, 3-octanone, 3-octanol, in Pleurotus sajor-caju, 1-octen-3-ol, 3-octanone, 1,5-octadien-3-one, 3-octanol, in Pleurotus florida-ostreatus-ostreatus, 1-octen-3-ol, n-hexanol, 3-octanone, 3-octanol, phenol, and in Pleurotus ostreatus (Ae-Neutari), 1-octen-3-ol, n-pentanal, n-hexanol, n-pentanol, 3-octanone, 3-octanol, 1,5-octadien-3-one, respectively. The mushrooms worked were rich in an alcohols and carbonyl compounds containing $C_8$ compounds. The peak area ratio of $C_8$ compounds in aroma concentrates were 56.60% in Pleurotus ostreatus ASI 201, 72.46% in Pleurotus sajor-caju, 54.84% in Pleurotus florida-ostreatus-ostreatus and 35.85% in Pleurotus ostreatus (Ae-Neutari ), respectively.
This study investigated the chemical composition of burdock (Arctium lappa L.) leaves essential oil, and the quantitative changes of the major terpene compounds according to the specific harvesting season. The essential oils obtained by the hydrodistillation extraction (HDE) method from the aerial parts of the burdock leaves were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The essential oil composition of this plant was characterized by the higher content of phytol and 6,10,14-trimethyl-2-pentadecanone. Seventy seven (98.28%) volatile flavor compounds were identified in the essential oil from the burdock leaves harvested during the spring season of 2012, and phytol (33.47%) and 6,10,14-trimethyl-2-pentadecanone (32.47%) were the most abundant compounds. Eighty eight (99.08%) compounds were identified in the essential oil from the leaves harvested during the autumn season of 2012, and in this case, phytol (37.35%) and 6,10,14-trimethyl-2-pentadecanone (34.67%) were also the most abundant compounds. These two volatile components were confirmed as the major oil components of the burdock leaves during the time of any harvest. The ratio between the two components contained in the burdock essential oils did not differ significantly by harvesting season. But overall, the essential oil harvested during the spring season contained 65.94% of the two major components, while for the essential oil harvested during the autumn season, the total amount of these two major components was 72.02%. While the main ingredients of the essential oils were found to be unchanged from one harvest time to the next, it was found to differ in content. For the burdock leaves, the quality index of the volatile constituents according to the harvest time would be more useful for utilizing the total quantity other than the proportion between phytol and 6,10,4-trimethyl-2-pentadecone.
This study investigated the volatile flavor composition of essential oils from Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. latilobum Kitamura and Aster yomena Makino. The essential oils obtained by the hydrodistillation extraction method from the aerial parts of the plants were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). One hundred (95.04%) volatile flavor compounds were identified in the essential oil from the C. zawadskii var. latilobum Kitamura. The major compounds were valencene (10.82%), ${\delta}$-cadinol (9.77%), hexadecanoic acid (8.70%), 2-methyl-4-(2,6,6-trimethylcyclohex-1-enyl) but-2-en-1-ol (3.67%), and 2-(2,4-hexadiynylidene)-1,6-dioxaspiro[4,4]non-3-ene (3.57%). Ninety-eight (93.83%) volatile flavor compounds were identified in the essential oil from the Aster yomena Makino. The major compounds were and 3-eicosyne (13.61%), 9,10,12-octadecatrienoic acid (7.8%), ${\alpha}$-caryophyllene alcohol (6.83%), 9-octadecynoic acid (6.03%), and ${\alpha}$-caryophyllene (5.74%). Although the two plants are apparently very similar, the chemical composition of the essential oils was significantly different in quality and quantity. In the case of C. zawadskii var. latilobum Kitamura, the sesquiterpene, valencene was found to be 10.82%, but it was not identified in A. yomena Makino. ${\delta}$-Cadinol appeared higher in C. zawadskii var. latilobum Kitamura than in A. yomena Makino. A clear characteristic of A. yomena Makino essential oil is that it has a high content of caryophyllene derivatives. The ${\alpha}$-caryophyllene alcohol contained in A. yomena Makino was relatively high at 6.83%, although the compound was not identified in C. zawadskii var. latilobum Kitamura. Also ${\alpha}$-caryophyllene was shown to be higher in A. yomena Makino than in C. zawadskii var. latilobum Kitamura.
This study investigated the volatile flavor composition of essential oils from Ligularia fischeri and Ligularia fischeri var. spiciformis. The essential oils obtained from the plants were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). 99.63% volatile flavor compounds were identified in the essential oil from the L. fischeri. The major compounds were (E)-3-hexenol (30.73%), longiverbenone (13.23%), viridiflorol (12.39%), ${\gamma}$-muurolene (7.32%), limonene (6.12%), and caryophyllene (${\beta}-4.24%$). 99.76% volatile flavor compounds were identified in the essential oil from the L. fischeri var. spiciformis. The major compounds were ledol (42.81%), (E)-15-heptadecenoic acid (33.91%), ${\beta}$-bisabolol (3.23%), viridiflorol (3.08%), and cis-${\alpha}$-farnesene (2.60%). Although the two plants are very similar, the chemical composition of the essential oils was significantly different in quality and quantity. In the case of L. fischeri., it has high contents of monoterpene and sesquiterpene. (E)-3-hexenol, longiverbenone, ${\alpha}$-phellandrene, and ${\alpha}$-myrcene were regarded as the characteristic odorants of L. fischeri, but they were not identified in L. fischeri var. spiciformis. Ledo, (E)-15-heptadecenoic acid, and ${\beta}$-bisabolol were regarded as the characteristic odorants of L. fischeri var. spiciformis, but they were not identified in L. fischeri. The ratio of limonene, ${\gamma}$-muurolene and viridiflorol can be used as an indicator to distinguish between these two plants.
In this study, volatile compounds in 13 aged and 3 commercial rice-distilled soju samples were isolated by headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 85 volatile components including 35 esters, 15 alcohols, 5 ketones, 3 aldehydes, 15 miscellaneous, and 14 unknowns were identified. Esters and alcohols were the largest groups among the quantified volatiles. Differences in volatile compounds among the distilled soju samples and possible sample groupings were examined by principal component analysis of the GC-MS datasets. The first and second principal components (PC1 and PC2, respectively) explained 51.94% of the total variation across the 16 samples. The samples aged in oak containers had higher concentrations of ketones, aldehydes, and miscellaneous compounds. In the positive direction of PC1, oak-aged samples were observed, while, pot-aged samples were observed on the far negative side. Furthermore, samples aged for longer periods, such as 18 months, were observed in the positive direction of PC2.

We analyzed the functional fragrant components of three species of Cymbidium oriental orchids using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). For the comparative analysis, C. goeringii 'Minchunran', 'Jugeumhwa', C. forrestii 'Chwigae', 'Songmae', 'Yongja', and C. faberi 'Choemae', 'Namyangmae', 'Hwaja' were investigated. Major fragrant components detected by GC/MS were selected on the basis of more than 3% value according to the analysis of peak area (%). We found that ${\alpha}$-bergamotene, which has a cytotoxic effect on breast cancer, cervical cancer, and glioblastoma, and nerolidol, which induces apoptosis of human hepatoma cells (HepG2), inhibits the growth of Streptococcus mutans and babesiosis, and has antibacterial properties, are common substances produced by C. goeringii L. Nerolidol and ${\beta}$-bisabolene, which is cytotoxic and suppresses the growth of malignant melanoma cells (B16-F10), HepG2, and leukemia cells (HL-60, K562), are major substances in C. forrestii R. Furthermore, ${\alpha}$-pinene, which inhibits the growth of gliobastoma cells (SF-767) and inhibits the anti-inflammatory action of hepatoma cells (BEL-7402); 1,8-cineole, which is a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of gastric ulcers; and 1,3,7-octatriene, which functions as a pheromone, are the most common substances in C. faveri R. Thus, substances identified as major fragrant components in oriental orchid species have multiple beneficial applications in human health. This research forms the basis for further studies of the roles of major fragrant components in oriental orchids.

A new technique was proposed for the determination of alkylphenols, chlorophenols and bisphenol A in korean aquatic biological samples. The alkylphenols, chlorophenols and bisphenol A in korean aquatic biological samples were extracted with acetonitrile and then acetonitrile layer was refrigerated at $-60^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours(freezing filtration method). Also, solid-phase extraction(SPE) was used to XAD-4 and subsequent conversion to isobutoxycarbonyl(isoBOC) or tert-butyldimethylsilyl(TBDMS) derivatives for sensitive analysis with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry-selected ion monitoring(GC/MS-SIM) mode. For isoBOC derivatization and TBDMS derivatization the recoveries were $70.1\sim150.6%$ and $93.8\sim108.3%$, the method detection limit(MDLs) of bisphenol A for SIM were $0.062{\mu}g/kg$ and $0.010{\mu}g/kg$, and the SIM respectively. When these methods were applied to korean aquatic biological samples, the concentrations of the 11 phenolic EDCs were $0.675\sim1.970{\mu}g/kg$.
The levels of butyltin compounds in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) food packaging using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) were monitored. The analytical method, involving the ethylation with sodium tetraethylborate, was found to be selective and sensitive for mono-n-butyltin (MBT), di-n-butyltin (DBT), and tri-n-butyltin (TBT), validated by a $0.005\;{\mu}g/mL$ limit of detection (LOD), an $R^2>0.999$ for linearity, and >90% of recovery, respectively. Finally, none of the commercial food wraps and gaskets showed detectable levels of butyltin compounds.
An analytical methodology based on solid-space extraction (SPE) with with Bond Elut Certify cartridge (Varian, 130 mg) has been developed for the qualification and quantitation of strychnine in blood. After the elution layer was evaporated, the residue was reconstituted with methanol for GC/MS. Internal standard was used 10 mg/l dextromethorphan. Strychnine is a potent central nervous stimulant and convulsant, and an alkaloid found in seeds of Strychnos nux-vomica. It was used therapeutically to improve circulation and muscle tone in oral or intramuscular doses of 0.05~8 mg. The fatal dose of strychnine for humans is 50~100 mg. A man was found dead lying curled up the corner of the large room in a roof house after the fire fighter opened a locked door inside to put out the fire. The postmortem blood and gastric contents were analyzed for toxicological testing. Strychnine and brucine were detected using GC/MS first in gastric contents extracts. The contents of strychnine was 0.083 mg/l in heart blood, 0.088 mg/l in peripheral blood and 4.0 mg/kg in gastric contents, respectively. Method validation was carried out in terms of linearity, accuracy, precision (intraday, interday) in blood. The assay is linear over 0.05~10 mg/l ($r^2$=0.999). Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) in blood were determined 0.02 mg/l (S/N=3) and 0.07 mg/l (S/N=10), respectively. Accuracy (bias%) of strychnine with 0.1, 1 and 10 mg/l was 12.0% (n=6), 9.3% (n=6) and 6.9% (n=6), respectively. Intraday precision (CV%) of strychnine with, 0.1, 1 and 10 mg/l were 6.4%, 10.4%, 1.2% (n=6), respectively. Interday precision (CV%) of strychnine with 0.1, 1 and 10 mg/l over three days were 24.0%, 18.5%, 13.8% (n=18), respectively. Relative recovery with 0.1, 1 and 10 mg/l (in blood) were 114.9%, 99.3% and 87.4% (n=6), respectively. The described method can be applied in forensic toxicology to determine strychnine in blood samples.
