  • In order to study the stability of herbal oil(Yoo-Je), the Yoo-Je from walnut and safflower measured their rancidity by gas chromatographic analysis. The use of specificity of column for estimating the oxidative deterioration of Yoo-Je was attempted. These results suggested the possible implication of pentanal and hexanal as an stability index for rancidity evaluation of Yoo-Je.

  • The thermal desorption-gas chromatographic (TD-GC) system has been constructed for the measurement of volatile organic compounds. The thermal desortion unit is composed of four major parts: 1) the control part; 2) the thermal desorption part; 3) the focusing part; and 4) the injection part. The peltier element was introduced to the focusing part for the temperature of the focusing tube to reach-35$^{\circ}C$. The system was tested for the linearity of the calibration curves and reproducibility of instrumental analyses using some disinfection by-products (DBPs) and BTXs (benzene, toluene and p-xylene). The coefficients of determination (r$^2$) for all the calibration curves made were higher than 0.998, and the coefficients of variation (CV) for triplicate measurements were all within 10%. The system also has been tested for field applicability. The analysis of field samples showed that there was no breakthrough problem in the sampling system and that the system could be applied to field measurements.

  • This investigation was intended to develope the quantitative gas liquid chromatographic method for quercetin. The method involves derivatization of the sample with trimethylsilylimidazole containing cholesterol as an internal standard and injection into a gas chromatograph with 3% OV-17 column. The calibration curve for the quercetin was linear over a sample in the range of 4-16.mu.g. The minimum detectable amount using FID in $1.6{\times}10^{-10}$ a.f.s. was determined to be $6.64{\times}10^{-10}mol$.

Analysis of Dimethylamine and Trimethylamine in Fishes by Gas Chromatography

  • To develop a rapid analytical method of dimethylamine(DMA) and trimethylamine(TMA) in fish, the contents of DMA and TMA in squid(Illex illecebrosus and Sepiell maindroni), cod(Gadus marcrocephalus) and plaice (Paralichthys olivaceus) by gas chromatographic (GC) and colorimetric method were determined. Recoveries for DMA in fish were 86.8~102.5% by GC and 74.2~94.5% by colorimetric method, while those for TMA were 93.0~101.1% by GC and 62.9~117.5% by colorimetric method. The contents of DMA and TMA in fish by GC were 29.7~325.3mg/kg and 145.6~356.0 mg/kg, respectively, and these by colorimetric method were 20.0~241.2mg/kg and 139.1~304.3mg/kg, respectively. The analysis of DMA and TMA in fishes by GC after the solvent extraction was simpler and faster and showed better recovery than colorimetric method.

  • Blood toluene concentrations of thirty nine Korean toluene-exposed workers in shoes making factory were checked by headspace-gas chromatographic analysis. Air toluene concentrations in each worker's working region also checked by personal sampler during workshift and analyzed by gas chromatography. The range of blood toluene concentration was 0.15-0.84mg/L. The range of toluene concentration of each worker's working area was 8.46-189.9ppm. The correlation between blood and air concentration of toluene was 0.824.

  • Quantitative gas chromatographic method for determining the ant repellent activity of cineol, ${\alpha}$-terpineol, linalool, and piperitone which usually found in Chinese Prickly Ash Zanthoxylum piperitum DC. was developed. These monoterpenes showed higher ant repellent activities than DEET due perhaps to their volatility. Gas chromatographic method quantified the volatility of the four monoterpenes and DEET.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a gas chromatographic (GC) method to analyze fatty acids in milk fat with a single injection. The single-injection GC method we developed for analyzing fatty acid composition can separate a wide range of fatty acid methyl esters from butyric acid to docosahexaenoic acid. It separated 6 isomers of 18:1 (cis-6, cis-9, cis-11, trans-6, trans-9 and trans-11), 4 isomers of 18:2 (cis-9-cis-12, trans-9-trans-12, cis-9-trans-12 and trans-9-cis-12), and 4 isomers of conjugated 18:2 (cis-9- trans-11, trans-9-cis-11, cis-10-trans-12 and trans-10-cis-12).

  • In this study, the detection limits of lower fatty acids in air were investigated by using Dynamic SPME(Solid Phase Micro-Extraction), i.e. improved Head Space - SPME method(HS-SPME). This Dynamic SPME, called SPDE(Solid Phase Dynamic Extraction), is the analytical method for volatile compounds in air with the extraction by using a stainless steel needle of which inner surface is coated with adsorption material and following the gas chromatographic analysis by inserting the needle into a injection port of GC and subsequently, desorption of the volatile compounds into a gas-chromatographic column. Extraction was carried out by passing the sample air through the needle with a suction pump which has been used for a detection tube. The result of measurement for the 6 lower fatty acids showed that the detection limits ranged from 0.10 ppm to 0.44 ppm and the linear correlation coefficients were over 0.99. Relative standard deviations obtained from 5 analytical repetition of a ca. 1.6 ppm standard mixture were in the range of 1.87%~2.47%. This method has been shown to be a adequate for the measuring C2~C5 fatty acids in air in the concentrations of over several hundreds ppb.

Evaluation of Sigumjang Aroma by Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis of Gas Chromatographic Profiles

  • A linear correlation, by the stepwise multiple regression analysis, was found between the sensory test of Sigumjang aroma and the gas chromatographic data which were transformed with logarithm. GC data is the most objective method to evaluate Sigumjang aroma. A multiple correlation coefficient and a determination coefficient of more than 0.9 were obtained at the 9th and 13th steps, respectively. At step 31, the coefficient of determination level of 0.95 was attained. The accuracy of its estimation became higher as the number of the variables entered into the regression model increased. Over 90% of the Sigumjang aroma was explained by 13 compounds indentified on GC. The contributing proportion of the peak 26 was the highest followed by peaks 57 (9.27%), 29 (7.51%), 54 (6.01%), 8 (5.99%), 49 (4.97%), and 13 (4.11%).
