Heat transfer coefficients in a dimpled channel, a ribbed channel, and a rip-dimple compound channel were measured by the transient liquid crystal technique. The channel aspect ratio, the rib height, the rip pitch, and the rib angle were 4:1, 6 mm, 60 mm and $60^{\circ}$, respectively. The dimple diameter and the center-to-center distance were 6mm and 7.2 mm, respectively, and the Reynolds number range was 30,000-50,000. Results showed that the heat transfer coefficients were increased by the angled rib. For the dimple-rib compound cooling cases, the heat transfer coefficients were further augmented and the thermal performance factor for the case was the highest.

The local heat transfer and pressure drop of developed turbulent flows in convergent/divergent channels with square axial cross-sectional areas were experimentally investigated to improve the channel design, such as a gas turbine cooling system. Square convergent/divergent channels with one ribbed wall were manufactured with a fixed rib height e of 10 mm and a ratio of rib spacing p to height e of 10. The measurement was conducted for Reynolds numbers from 15,000 to 89,000. Convergent, divergent, and straight channels with ratios $D_{ho}/D_{hi}$ of 0.75, 1.33, and 1.0, respectively, are considered. Of the three channel types, the ribbed divergent channel was found to produce the best thermal performance under identical flow rate, pumping power, and pressure loss conditions.

Pressure drops were measured for the flow boiling process within horizontal rectangular channels. The gap between the upper and the lower plates of each channel ranges from 0.4 to 2mm while the channel width being fixed to 20mm. Refrigerant 113 was used as the test fluid. The mass flux ranges from 50 to 200kg/㎡s and the channel walls were uniformly heated up to 15kW/㎡. The quality range covers from 0.15 to 0.75. The present experimental conditions coincide with the operating conditions of compact heat exchangers in which the liquid and gas flows are laminar and turbulent. The measured results were well represented by the two-phase frictional multiplier of Lee (2001) which has been developed for air-water two-phase flows within the deviation of $\pm$20%.
The present study is to investigates the convective heat transfer characteristics and pressure drop inside the rib-roughened cooling passage of gas turbine blades. The divergent rectangular channel is fabricated with V-shaped ribs on one wall only and the inlet hydraulic diameter to outlet hydraulic diameter ratio($D_{ho}/D_{hi}$) of 1.49 is used. The current investigation has covered a Reynolds number (Re) range of 22,000~75,000, relative roughness height ($e/D_h$) of 0.1~0.2, and rib angle of attack (a) of $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, and $60^{\circ}$ for a fixed relative pitch of 10. Results show that the Nusselt numbers are the greatest in the $60^{\circ}$-angled ribs; however, the total friction factors are the highest in the $30^{\circ}$-angled ribs.

The high-speed bypass effect on the heat exchanger performance has been investigated numerically. The plate-fin type heat exchanger was modeled using two-dimensional porous approximation for the fin region. Governing equations of mass, momentum, and energy equations for compressible turbulent flow were solved using ideal-gas assumption for the air flow. Various bypass-channel height were considered for Mach numbers ranging 0.25-0.65. Due to the existence of the fin in the bypass channel, the main flow tends to turn into the core region of the channel, which results in the distorted velocity profile downstream of the fin region. The boundary layer thickness, displacement thickness, and the momentum thickness showed the variation of mass flow through the fin region. The mass flow variation along the fin region was also shown for various bypass heights and Mach numbers. The volumetric entropy generation was used to assess the loss mechanism inside the bypass duct and the fin region. Finally, the correlations of the friction factor and the Colburn j-factor are summarized.

Interfacial shear stresses have been determined for countercurrent stratified flow of air and water in a nearly-horizontal rectangular channel, based upon measurements of pressure drop, gas velocity profiles and mean film thickness. A dimensionless correlation for the interfacial friction factor has been developed as a function of the gas and liquid Reynolds numbers. Equivalent surface roughnesses for the interfacial friction factor have been calculated using the Nikuradse correlation and have been compared with the intensity of the wave height fluctuation on the interface. The results show that the interfacial shear stress is mainly affected by turbulent mixing near the interface due to the wave motion rather than by the roughened surface.

A mathematical model of slip-in booster separation dynamics is described. A longitudinal 3-DOF(degree of freedom) 2-body dynamic model is developed to simulate the separation dynamics. Aerodynamic models of the missile and the exposed area of booster are built. And, gas generator pushing the booster out and internal channel pressure drop are modelled. To simulate the model, it is assumed that the missile can maintain the 1g level-fight condition during the separation. With this assumption, the interaction forces between missile and booster through the separation phases: phase 0: initial, phase 1: linear translation, and phase 2: free flight motion are defined. Using the simulation, missile flight conditions for slip-in booster`s safe separation, which can be represented by Mach vs. height envelope, are suggested.

The present study investigates the effects of various rib arrangements on heat/mass transfer in the cooling passage of gas turbine blades. A complex flow structure occurs in the cooling passage with rib turbulators which promote heat transfer on the wall. It is important to increase not only the heat transfer rates but also the uniformity of heat transfer in the cooling passage. A numerical computation is performed using a commercial code to calculate the flow structures and experiments are conducted to measure heat/mass transfer coefficients using a naphthalene sublimation technique. A square channel (50 mm $\times$ 50 mm) with rectangular ribs (4 mm $\times$ 5 mm) is used fur the stationary duct test. The experiments focus on the effects of rib arrangements and gap positions in the discrete ribs on the heat/mass transfer on the duct wall. The rib angle of attack is 60°and the rib-to-rib pitch is 32 mm, that is 8 times of the rib height. With the inclined rib angle of attack (60°), the parallel rib arrangements make a pair of counter rotating secondary flows in the cross section, but the cross rib arrangements make a single large secondary flow including a small secondary vortex. These secondary flow patterns affect significantly the heat/mass transfer on the ribbed wall. The heat/mass transfer in the parallel arrangements is 1.5 ∼2 times higher than that in the cross arrangements. However, the shifted rib arrangements change little the heat/mass transfer from the inline rib arrangements. The gap position in the discrete rib affects significantly the heat/mass transfer because a strong flow acceleration occurs locally through the gap.
In the high convective gas flow condition, irregular shaped water waves from which droplet entrainment occurs are generated under horizontally stratified two-phase flow condition. KAERI proposed a new mechanistic droplet entrainment model based on the momentum balance equation consisting of the shear stress, surface tension, and gravity forces. However, this model requires correlation or experimental data of several physical parameters related to the wave characteristics. In the present study, we tried to measure the physical parameters such as wave slope, wave hypotenuse length, wave velocity, wave frequency, and wavelength experimentally. For this, an experiment was conducted in the horizontal rectangular channel of which width, height, and length are, respectively, 40 mm, 50 mm, and 4.2 m. In the present test, the working fluids are chosen as air and water. The PIV technique was applied not only to obtain images for phase interface waves but also to measure the velocity field of the water flow. Additionally, we developed the parallel wire conductance probe for the confirmation of wave height from PIV image. Finally, we measured the physical parameters to be used in the validation of new droplet entrainment model.
Denitrification in streams is of great importance because it is essential for amelioration of water quality and accurate estimation of $N_2O$ budgets. Denitrification is a major biological source or sink of $N_2O$, an important greenhouse gas, which is a multi-step respiratory process that converts nitrate ($NO_3{^-}$) to gaseous forms of nitrogen ($N_2$ or $N_2O$). In aquatic ecosystems, the complex interactions of water flooding condition, substrate supply, hydrodynamic and biogeochemical properties modulate the extent of multi-step reactions required for $N_2O$ flux. Although water flow in streambed and residence time affect reaction output, effects of a complex interaction of hydrodynamic, geomorphology and biogeochemical controls on the magnitude of denitrification in streams are still illusive. In this work, we built a two-dimensional water flow channel and measured $N_2O$ flux from channel sediment with different bed geomorphology by using static closed chambers. Two independent experiments were conducted with identical flume and geomorphology but sediment with differences in dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The experiment flume was a circulation channel through which the effluent flows back, and the size of it was $37m{\times}1.2m{\times}1m$. Five days before the experiment began, urea fertilizer (46% N) was added to sediment with the rate of $0.5kg\;N/m^2$. A sand dune (1 m length and 0.15 m height) was made at the middle of channel to simulate variations in microtopography. In high- DOC experiment, $N_2O$ flux increases in the direction of flow, while the highest flux ($14.6{\pm}8.40{\mu}g\;N_2O-N/m^2\;hr$) was measured in the slope on the back side of the sand dune. followed by decreases afterward. In contrast, low DOC sediment did not show the geomorphological variations. We found that even though topographic variation influenced $N_2O$ flux and chemical properties, this effect is highly constrained by carbon availability.
