  • Introduction of robustness index in the structure is done in three ways: deterministic robustness index, probabilistic robustness index, and risk-based robustness index. In past decades, there have been numerous researches to evaluate robustness index in both deterministic and probabilistic ways. In this research, by using a risk analysis, a risk-based robustness index has been defined for the structure. By creating scenarios in accordance with uncertainty parameters of critical and unexpected gas blast accident, a new method has been suggested for evaluating risk-based robustness index. Finally, a numerical example for the evaluation of risk-based robustness index of a four-storey reinforced concrete moment frame, designed and built based on Eurocode 8 code, has been presented with results showing a lower risk of robustness.

  • Computational and theoritical investigations of an arc plasma have been made for the design of a circuit breaker. Modeling of an arc plasma used to be very involved and difficult because of the many variables and factors, In this paper, the dynamic behavior of an arc plasma is investigated by solving the MHD equations. Comparing an $SF_6$-blast arc with a non-blast arc, it has been found that the effect of gas-blast has a great influence on density rather than temperature.

  • A test facility to measure the performance of a KM(Kick Motor) is constructed, and prediction of blast wave propagation over the facility is performed to check if the safety of test personnel in MCC(Main Control Center) can be guaranteed even for the most severe explosion. Assuming that the initial explosion energy is contained in a sphere under the pressure of 500, 1000, 1500 psi, respectively, the radius of the sphere is determined for each pressure to set the mass of contained explosion gas to 35 kg. The material properties of explosion gas are set to be the ones of KM propellant combustion gas under normal condition. To reduce the effort and time required for a complex three-dimensional modeling, the flowfield is approximated to axismmetry. Calculations are performed for all three initial pressure conditions, and the analysis of the result is given for 1500 psi which is expected to be the worst case. The maximum pressure is 3.5 psig while the minimum pressure is -1.2 psig on the outer wall of MCC, and the maximum pressure difference between the inner and outer walls of protection wall amounts to 3.0 psi.

  • The offshore installation units may be subjected to various accidental loads such as collision from supply vessels, impact from dropped objects, blast load from gas explosion and thermal load from fire. This paper deals with the design and strength evaluation method of the stiffened plate structures in response to a blast load caused by a gas explosion accident. It is a comprehensive review of various items used in actual project such as the size and type of the explosive loads, general design procedure/concept and analysis method. The structural analyses using simple analysis methods based on SDOF model and nonlinear finite element analysis are applied to the particular FPSO project. Also validation studies on the design guidance given by simple analysis method based on SDOF model have also considered several items such as backpressure effects, material behavior and duration time of the overpressure. A good correlation between the prediction made by simple analysis method based on SDOF model and nonlinear finite element analysis can be generally obtained up to the elastic limit.

  • This paper addresses two main issues relevant to the structural assessment of buildings subjected to explosions. The first issue regards the robustness evaluation of steel frame structures: a procedure is provided for computing "robustness curves" and it is applied to a 20-storey steel frame building, describing the residual strength of the (blast) damaged structure under different local damage levels. The second issue regards the precise evaluation of blast pressures acting on structural elements using Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) techniques. This last aspect is treated with particular reference to gas explosions, focusing on some critical parameters (room congestion, failure of non-structural walls and ignition point location) which influence the development of the explosion. From the analyses, it can be deduced that, at least for the examined cases, the obtained robustness curves provide a suitable tool that can be used for risk management and assessment purposes. Moreover, the variation of relevant CFD analysis outcomes (e.g., pressure) due to the variation of the analysis parameters is found to be significant.

  • Analysis of the internal state of the blast furnace is necessary to predict and to control the operating conditions. Especially, it is important to develop models of the blast furnace to predict the cohesive zone because shape of the cohesive zone influences overall operating conditions of blast furnace such as gas flow, chemical reactions and temperature. Because many previous blast furnace models have assumed cohesive zone to be fixed, it was not possible to evaluate the shape change of cohesive zone in relation with operating conditions such as PCR, blast condition, and production rate. In this study, an axi-symmetric 2-dimensional steady state model is proposed to simulate blast furnace processes. In this model, cohesive zone is determined by the solid temperature. Finite volume method is employed for numerical simulation. To find location of the cohesive zone, entire calculation procedure is iterated until converged. Through this approach, shape of the cohesive zone, velocity and temperature within the furnace are predicted from the model.

  • Topside areas on an offshore oil and gas platform are highly susceptible to explosion. A blast wall on these areas plays an important role in preventing explosion damage and must withstand the expected explosion loads. The uniformly distributed loading condition, predicted by Explosion Risk Analyses (ERAs), has been applied in most of the previous analysis methods. However, analysis methods related to load conditions are inaccurate because the blast overpressure around the wall tends to be of low-level in the open area and high-level in the enclosed area. The main objectives of this paper are to study the effects of applying different load applications and compare the dynamic responses of the blast wall. To do so, various kinds of blast pressures were measured by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations on the target area. Nonlinear finite element analyses of the blast wall under two types of identified dynamic loadings were also conducted.

  • Purpose: During August 2010, a natural gas fuel cylinder on a bus exploded in downtown Seoul, injuring 20 citizens. This kind of blast injury has never been reported in Korea before. Thus, the goal of this study was to review the clinical features of these victims to help physicians manage similar cases and to understand the risk factors associated with blast injuries in everyday life. Methods: Twenty (20) victims who visited nearby emergency departments, and 3 peoples left hospital without care. Seventeen (17) victims were included in this study, and the following factors were investigated: age, sex, type of hospital, diagnosis of injury, injury mechanism, position of victim (in-bus/out of bus), classification of injury severity with START (simple triage and rapid treatment), and classification of injury according to the mechanism of the blast injury. Results: The victims included 8 males (47%), 9 females (53%). The mean age was $37.5{\pm}12$. Thirteen (13) victims were transferred to two tertiary hospitals, and 4 were transferred to two secondary hospitals. The types of injury were 3 fractures, 2 ligaments injuries, 6 contusions, 4 abrasions, and 3 open wounds (one of them was combined fracture). According to START classification, 17 victims were 1 immediate, 11 minor, 5 delayed, and no death. Classifications according to the mechanism of the blast injury were 1 primary injury, 6 secondary injuries (2 of them combined other mechanism), 3 tertiary injuries and 9 quaternary injuries. Conclusion: Trauma care physicians should be familiar with not only the specific types of injuries from blast accidents, but also the potential accidents that may occur in public facilities.

  • The outer tank of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tank is a longitudinally and meridianally pre-stressed concrete (PSC) wall structure. Because of the current trend of constructing larger LNG storage tanks, the pre-stressing forces required to increase wall strength must be significantly increased. Because of the increase in tank sizes and pre-stressing forces, an extreme loading scenario such as a bomb blast or an airplane crash needs to be investigated. Therefore, in this study, the blast resistance performance of LNG storage tanks was analyzed by conducting a blast simulation to investigate the safety of larger LNG storage tanks. Test data validation for a blast simulation of reinforced concrete panels was performed using a specific FEM code, LS-DYNA, prior to a full-scale blast simulation of the outer tank of a 270,000-kL LNG storage tank. Another objective of this study was to evaluate the safety and serviceability of an LNG storage tank with respect to varying amounts of explosive charge. The results of this study can be used as basic data for the design and safety evaluation of PSC LNG storage tanks.
