  • Effect of a non-absorbable gas on the absorption process in a vertical tube absorber was investigated numerically. The water vapor mined with air as the non-absorbable gas is absorbed into LiBr/water solution film. The flow is assumed to be laminar and fully developed in both liquid and gas phases. The diffusion and energy equations were solved in both phases to give the temperature and concentrations, from which heat and mass fluxes were determined. It was shown that the local absorption rate decreases as the mass fraction of air in water vapor increases. The vapor pressure of water at the liquid-vapor interface reduces significantly since the non-absorbable gas is accumulated near the interface. The effect of non-absorbable gases on absorption rate becomes larger as the mass flow rate of the vapor decreases. For small amount of non-absorbable gases the total absorption rate of water vapor increases as the mass flow rate of the vapor decreases. Total absorption rate increases as the mass flow rate of the vapor increases for large concentration of non-absorbables at the inlet of an absorber.

  • The study presents experimental and theoretical analysis focusing on the infulence of a noncondensable gas upon the absorption enhancement that is obtained by Marangoni convection generated by the addition of the surfactant. The shadowgraph method is adopted in this visualization. As a result of absorption phenomena with shadowgraph photos, the different patterns of Marangoni convection cells are observed in accordance with the various amounts of noncondensable gas. Furthermore, non dimensional number K(Ma/Ra) is introduced to calculate the value of surface tension difference theoretically for the comparison with the various amount of non condensable gas in absorber.

  • This study focuses on the development and evaluation of the high efficiency absorption chiller-heater, which can be applied to a direct gas fired, double effect system with 40RT (508,000kJ) cooling capacity. The performance of the absorption chiller-heater is investigated through cycle simulation and experiment to obtain the system characteristics with the inlet tenperature of cooling, chilled water, and gas input flow rate. The efficiency of the different cycles has been studied and the simulation and experiment results show that higher coefficient of performance could be obtained for mixed flow cycle. The five percent difference was obtained from the comparison between experimental and cycle simulation results. As a result of this study, the optimum designs were determined based on the operating conditions and the coefficient of performance.

  • The objectives of the present work are to investigate the influence of the solution cooled absorber(SCA), refrigerant drain heat exchanger(RSX), exhaust gas/solution heat exchanger(ESX) and high efficiency solution heat exchanger on COP for a double-effect series-flow absorption chiller. A simulation program has been prepared for the cycle analysis of absorption chillers. As a result, solution heat exchangers(LSX, HSX) are the most effective element for the COP than the others. In spite of the poor contribution to COP, SCA plays an important role to reduce the crystallization phenomena of LiBr solution at solution heat exchanger. And the optimum solution split ratio varies with the relative size of RSX and LSX.

  • In the present study, the improvement of absorption characteristics by installing insert devices, such as spring and wire screen, inside the vertical tube absorber were studied experimentally. Momentum, heat and mass transfer rate in the absolution process of smooth bare tube, smooth tube with spring-insert, and with wire screen-insert were compared and analysed in range of film Reynolds number of 40∼200. The improvement of heat transfer rate by spring-insert and screen-insert were remarkable especially in the low Reynolds number region. As the mesh number increased in screen-insert and as the pitch decreased in spring-insert, Nusselt and Sherwood number increased. Degradation of mass transfer by non-absorbable gas showed similar qualitative trends regardless of the insert type.

  • Micro gas turbine (MGT) has received attention recently as a small-scale distributed power source. Due to many advantages such as their small size, low maintenance cost and minimal vibrations during operation, they are expected to become widespread in a wide range of applications. The exhaust heat emitted by the MGT is in the form of an exhaust gas that is about $270^{\circ}C$ which is an extremely clean gas. Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) has researched performance characteristics of a cogeneration system combining 28kW class MGT and 13 USRT class absorption hot and chilled water generator in the local condition. The present results of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) in heating mode, the total efficiency of cogen. system is about $65\%$ and heating capacity is 33kW at 25kW MGP power (2) in cooling mode, COP is about 0.6 at 22kW MGT power.

  • Small capacity gas absorption systems for cooling and heating have been favorably considered to reduce the seasonal imbalance of electrical loads and LNG consumption recently. A multifunctional plate-fin heat exchanger was adopted as an absorber and the performance was tested and analyzed to reduce the size and weight of the absorption heat pump. The test was performed using breadboard type ammonia absorption machine. The performance was compared with the plate type absorber and there was little difference in heat and mass transfer characteristics. The heat and mass transfer performance was a function of poor solution and vapor flow rates and the mass transfer was dependent on vapor flow rate more than heat transfer.

  • An absorption heat pump cycle has been modeled and simulated to analyze the system performance of water-cooled, series-flow, double-effect absorption heat pump, which can be applied to a direct gas fired cooling system with the medium range of cooling capacity (15RT level). Effect of absorption cooling system parameters, such as concentration difference, inlet temperature of cooling water, 1st generator temperature, leaving temperature differences of condenser and evaporator and efficiency of solution heat exchanger, has been investigated in the view of system cooling performance.

  • Fuel cells supply electric power and heat at work, and their exhaust gas is comparatively clear. So they are in the limelight as one of the co-generation systems which behave friendly with the environment. Fuel cells discharge both steam and hot water. Accordingly, if we combine absorption heat pump driven by waste heat with fuel cells, we can construct an advanced energy conserving system. The purpose of this study is the objective for evaluating the possibilities of effectively utilizing waste heat of fuel cells as a heat source for the single and double effect absorption systems. Simulation studies on single and double effect absorption have been performed for water/lithium-bromide pair. The effectiveness of introducing a waste heat source of fuel cells is demonstrated. The result of this study showed that total efficiency was about 85% at rated operation and about 75% at 75% load operation. Absorption cycle moved to more strong concentration when fuel cell operated at 75% load.
