The ignition phenomena of a solid fuel plate of polymethyl-methacrylate(PMMA), which is vertically positioned and exposed to a thermal radiation source, is numerically studied here. A two-dimensional transient model includes such various aspects as thermal decomposition of PMMA, gas phase radiation absorption, gas phase chemical reaction and air entrainment by natural convection. Whereas the previous studies considers the problem approximately in a one-dimensional form by neglecting the natural convection, the present model takes account of the two-dimensional effect of radiation and air entrainment. The inert heating of the solid fuel is also taken into consideration. Radiative heat transfer is incorporated by th Discrete Ordinates Method(DOM) with the absorption coefficient evaluated using gas species concentration. The thermal history of the solid fuel plate shows a good agreement compared with experimental results. Despite of induced natural convective flow that induces heat loss from the fuel surface, the locally absorbed radiant energy, which is converted to the internal energy, is found to play an important role in the onset of gas phase ignition. The ignition is considered to occur when the rate of variation of gas phase reaction rate reaches its maximum value. Once the ignition takes place, the flame propagates downward.
A cylindrical-shape, horizontal furnace was used to investigate the effect of particle size on the pulverized coal combustion behavior. Three differently-sized fractions (5, 30, and 44 microns in average diameter) of high-volatile bituminous coal, were burned in the test furnace. Ignition characteristics of pulverized coal flame were determined through the amount of methane in the carrier gas for the self-sustaining flame. Easiest ignition occurred with the immediately-sized coal particles. Ignition of coal jet flame appeared to occur through a gas-phase homogeneous process for particles larger than 30 microns. Below this limiting size, heterogeneous process probably dominated ignition of coal flame. Oxygen concentration of combustion air was varied up to 50%, to determine the oxygen-enrichment effect on the coal ignition behavior. Oxygen enrichment of primary air assisted ignition behavior of pulverized coal flame. However, enrichment of secondary air didn't produce any effect on the ignition behavior.

Intake/exhaust valve timing and exhaust cam lift were changed to control the internal exhaust gas recirculation (IEGR) and combustion phase of homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine. To measure the IEGR rate, in-cylinder gas was sampled during from intake valve close to before ignition start. The lower exhaust cam made shorter valve event than higher exhaust cam and made IEGR increase because of trapping the exhaust gas. IEGR rate was more affected by exhaust valve timing than intake valve timing and increased as exhaust valve timing advanced. In-cylinder pressure was increased near top dead center due to early close of exhaust valve. Ignition timing was more affected by intake valve timing than exhaust valve timing in case of exhaust valve lift 8.4 mm, while ignition timing was affected by both intake and exhaust valve timing in case of exhaust valve 2.5 mm. Burn duration with exhaust valve lift 2.5 mm was longer than other case due to higher IEGR rate. The fuel conversion efficiency with higher exhaust valve lift was higher than that with lower exhaust valve lift. The late exhaust and intake maximum open point (MOP) made the fuel conversion efficiency improve.

The present study is mainly motivated to investigate the vaporization, auto-ignition, and combustion of liquid fuel spray injected into high pressure environment. The unsteady, multi-dimensional models were used for realistic simulation of spray as well as prediction of accurate ignition delay time. The Separated Flow (SF) model which considers the finite rate of transport between liquid and gas phases was employed to represent the interactions between spray and gas field. Among the SF models, the Discrete Droplet Model (DDM) which simulates the spray using finite number of representative samples of discrete droplets was adopted. The Eulerian-Lagrangian formulation was used to analyze the two-phase interactions. In order to predict an evaporation rate of droplet in high pressure environment, the high pressure vaporization model was applied using thermodynamic equilibrium and phase equilibrium at droplet surface. The high pressure effect as well as high temperature effect was considered in the calculation of liquid and gas properties. In case of vaporization, an interaction between droplets was studied through the simulation of spray. The interaction is shown up differently whether the ambient gas field is at normal pressure or high pressure. Also, the characteristics of spray behavior in high pressure environment were investigated through the comparison with normal ambient pressure case. In both cases, the spray behaviors are simulated through the distributions of temperature and reaction rate in gas field.

In order to satisfy the ULEV emissions regulation, fast light-off of a catalyst is essential for reduction of HC and CO emissions during the cold start. Cranking Exhaust Gas Ignition(CEGI) method developed in this study showed that the catalyst reaches the light-off temperature in a few seconds. The CEGI stops the ignition signal for a few seconds during the cranking period, so the unburned fuel-air mixture bypasses the combustion chamber and flows through the exhaust manifold. When the unburned mixture reaches two glow plugs installed upstream of the catalyst, it burns and releases the thermal energy to heat up the catalyst, In the FTP-75 vehicle tests, the CEGI showed that the exhaust emissions reduced by 47.7% for THC and by 88.6% for CO in the cold-transient phase of the test.

An experimental study has been conducted to explore the behaviors of the radiative ignition of polymethylmetacrylate(PMMA) in a confined enclosure such as the ignition delay time, PMMA surface temperature, the ignition location and the ignition process. In addition, the effects of hot wall orientation on the ignition delay and PMMA surface temperature were studied. When the hot wall is located at the bottom, ignition delay time is the shortest. Ignition surface temperature becomes the lowest for the hot top wall case. These are due to buoyancy effect. Since the radiative heat flux of hot wall is rather lower than laser source, the ignition is considered to be controlled by the mixing process. Therefore, the ignition location, where appropriate mixture of fuel and oxygen exists, occurs near the hot wall. The flame propagates along the hot wall where there exists sufficient oxygen.
Vaporization, ignition and combustion of fuel droplets in tandem array are theoretically investigated to understand the droplet interactions in combustors. Including the effects of density variation in gas-phase, internal circulation and transient liquid heating, a numerical studies are performed by changing parameters such as initial droplet temperatures, initial droplet spacings, initial Reynolds numbers, surrounding gas temperatures, and activation energies of fuel vapors. Combustion regime maps classify the droplet combustion phenomena according to the configuration and location of the flame with respect to injection Reynolds numbers and surrounding gas temperatures. In addition, it is shown that the dynamic histories of droplets and ignition delay times are dependent on droplet size ratios and initial spacings of tandem droplets.
Diesel-Fueled HCCI(Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) Engine is an advanced combustion process explained as a premixed charge of diesel fuel and air is admitted into the cylinder and compression ignited. It has possibility to reduce NOx by spontaneous auto-ignition at multiple points that allows very lean combustion resulting in low combustion temperatures. Also PM could be reduced by the premixed combustion and no fuel-rich zones. But HCCI couldn't be realized because of the difficulties in vaporizing the diesel, control of combustion phase directly. To solve these problems, new fuel injection strategy, explained as the pilot fuel injection to promote ignition near TDC following the main fuel injection at the extremely advanced timing, is applied during the compression ratio is varied from 18.9:1 to 27.7:1 This is not a pilot fuel to promote the ignition but also the direct control method of the combustion phase. Experimental result shows the pilot fuel injection promote the ignition and the compression ignition of the HCCI engine is achieved as compression ratio becomes higher. Also there is an optimal pilot fuel injection timing for the HCCI combustion. NOx is reduced more than 90% compared to DI-Diesel case but PM and THC emission needs more investigation.

For a simple one-dimensional ignition problem a mathematical model is described to investigate the difficulties in numerical simulations. Some computation results are obtained and comparison is made with analytical solution. Discussions are made on topics such as 1) coordinate transformation, 2) gas-phase and solid-phase analysis; (divergence form of the governing system, a finite-volume discretization, implicit time integration, upwind split flux, spatial accuracy improvement are described. Mass, reagent mass, and energy conservations are solved.), and 3) method to determine quantities on the burning surface (matching). Results obtained for small values of the non-dimensional pressure show a steady-combustion and good agreement with the analytical solution. Numerical instability appeared for larger values of the pressure, discussion on the cause of the problem is made. This effort is a part of a study of flame spread phenomena on solid propellant surface.

This paper investigates the steady-state combustion characteristics of the Homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) engine with variable valve timing(VVT) and dimethyl ether(DME) direct injection, to find out its benefits in exhaust gas emissions. HCCI combustion is an attractive way to lower carbon dioxide($CO_2$), nitrogen oxides(NOx) emission and to allow higher fuel conversion efficiency. However, HCCI engine has inherent problem of narrow operating range at high load due to high in-cylinder peak pressure and consequent noise. To overcome this problem, the control of combustion start and heat release rate is required. It is difficult to control the start of combustion because HCCI combustion phase is closely linked to chemical reaction during a compression stroke. The combination of VVT and DME direct injection was chosen as the most promising strategy to control the HCCI combustion phase in this study. Regular gasoline was injected at intake port as main fuel, while small amount of DME was also injected directly into the cylinder as an ignition promoter for the control of ignition timing. Different intake valve timings were tested for combustion phase control. Regular gasoline was tested for HCCI operation and emission characteristics with various engine conditions. With HCCI operation, ignition delay and rapid burning angle were successfully controlled by the amount of internal EGR that was determined with VVT. For best IMEP and low HC emission, DME should be injected during early compression stroke. IMEP was mainly affected by the DME injection timing, and quantities of fuel DME and gasoline. HC emission was mainly affected by both the amount of gasoline and the DME injection timing. NOx emission was lower than conventional SI engine at gasoline lean region. However, NOx emission was similar to that in the conventional SI engine at gasoline rich region. CO emission was affected by the amount of gasoline and DME.
