Mechanical Properties of Al-Si Composite Powders produced by Gas Atomization Process

  • The microstructure and mechanical properties of the hypereutectic prealloyed Al-Si powders prepared by the gas atomization process were described in this paper. With increasing the gas pressure of the atomization, the average powder size was decreased from about $145{\mu}m\;to\;80{\mu}m$. The primary eutectic Si particles were uniformly distributed in the Al matrix and their size varied in the range of $8-10{\mu}m$. The high densified specimens with above 96% of the theoretical density were fabricated the hot pressing process. The UTS mechanical properties of VN1 specimens were much higher than that of conventional hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys.

  • The hypereutectic Al-20 wt%Si powders including some amount of Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn were prepared by a gas atomization process. In order to get highly densified Al-Si bulk specimens, the as-atomized and sieved powders were extruded at $500^{\circ}C$, Microstructure and tensile properties of the extruded Al-Si alloys were investigated in this study. Relative density of the extruded samples was over 98%. Ultimate tensile strength (UTS) in stress-strain curves of the extruded powders increased after T6 heat treatments. Elongation of the samples was also increased from 1.4% to 3.2%. The fracture surfaces of the tested pieces showed a fine microstructure and the average grain size was about $1{\mu}m$.

동축형 인젝터의 미립화 특성 (Atomization Characteristics of shear coaxial twin fluid injector)

  • To understand the basic the structure of the spray field and to obtain the initial conditions for computational models for shear coaxial twin-fluid injectors. the atomization characteristics under different flow and geometric conditions were examined. The spray characteristics such as SMD, mean axial and radial velocities, Dia. of droplets and volume flux with a P.D.P.A. Water and nitrogen gas under atmospheric conditions were used as a test fluids. The drops produced by shear coaxial injectors continue to disintegrate along the spray axis and decrease their sizes. SMD was the maximum at the spray center of spray and decreased with increasing radial distance. The results of this parametric study showed that SMD decreased with increasing gas injection velocity as well as with decreasing liquid injection mass flow rate, The relative velocity between gas and liquid flow played a significant role resulted in decreasing SMD and in spreading the spray. Recessing the liquid orifice resulted decreasing SMD and a spreading the spray. Recess of liquid orifice by 5.0mm showed best atomization characteristics in this experiment. Although drop diameter changes, shear coaxial injector sprays had constant velocity and exhibited a high degree of radial symmetry.

  • 가스메탄과 액체산소를 추진제로 사용하는 스월 동축형 인젝터에서 리세스 길이 변화에 따른 분무특성 및 미립화 특성에 대한 연구를 수행하였다. 패터네이터를 이용하여 분산각 및 분무의 질량분포를 측정하였으며, 미립화 특성을 살펴보기 위해 GSV(Global Size and Velocity)를 이용하여 평균액적크기를 측정하였다. 결과적으로 액체만 분사한 경우 리세스 길이가 증가함에 따라 분산각은 감소하나 미립화 특성이 좋아지는 것을 확인하였고, 기체/액체를 동시 분사한 경우 액체만 분사한 경우에 비해 분산각은 작아지나 미립화 특성이 좋아지는 것을 확인하였다.

  • In this study, ultra-fine soft-magnetic micro-powders are prepared by high-pressure gas atomization of an Fe-based alloy, Fe-Hf-B-Nb-P-C. Spherical powders are successfully obtained by disintegration of the alloy melts under high-pressure He or $N_2$ gas. The mean particle diameter of the obtained powders is $25.7{\mu}m$ and $42.1{\mu}m$ for He and $N_2$ gas, respectively. Their crystallographic structure is confirmed to be amorphous throughout the interior when the particle diameter is less than $45{\mu}m$. The prepared powders show excellent soft magnetic properties with a saturation magnetization of 164.5 emu/g and a coercivity of 9.0 Oe. Finally, a toroidal core is fabricated for measuring the magnetic permeability, and a ${\mu}_r$ of up to 78.5 is obtained. It is strongly believed that soft magnetic powders prepared by gas atomization will be beneficial in the fabrication of high-performance devices, including inductors and motors.

  • 본 논문에서는 액체로켓 엔진에 많이 사용된 충돌형 분사기의 미립화 특성에 대해 연구하였다. 분사속도와 주위 기체압력은 분열과 미립화 과정에 결정적인 영향을 주는 변수로서 $3m/s{\sim}30m/s,\;0.1Mpa{\sim}4.0MPa$로 변화시키면서 실험을 수행하였다. 전체적으로 분사속도와 기체압력의 증가에 따라 측정된 분열길이, 분열파장, 액적크기 등이 감소하였다. 하지만 그 감소율은 이론에서 예측된 것과는 다른 값을 나타내었다.

  • 고압관, 가압관, 발사관으로 구성된 2단식 경가스 총을 사용하는 축소형 초고압 분사 시스템은 액체 제트를 초음속으로 생성할 수 있다. 이러한 초음속 액체 제트는 전방에 발생하는 충격파로 인한 액적 미립화를 촉진 시킬 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 초음속 액체 제트의 미립화 특성을 파악하기 위해 직선 원추형 노즐을 사용하여 기하학적인 형상 변화에 따른 실험을 진행하였다. 미립화 특성을 나타내는 SMD는 L/d가 증가할수록 $151.2{\mu}m$에서 $52.25{\mu}m$로 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다.

  • The atomization characteristics of an annular liquid (water) sheet of small radius with a core gas (air) flow were studied. Different sizes of annular gaps (0.2, 0.4 and 0.8 mm) were tested to find the effect of liquid sheet thickness on SMD. The inner diameter of the gas port for the core gas flow was 4 mm. Cross-section averaged SMD was measured for various liquid and gas velocities. Regions of the SMD decrease with the increase of the liquid velocity always existed regardless of the liquid sheet thickness. This attributes to the transition of the flow patterns of spray and also to the aerodynamic interaction between the atomizing gas and the ripples on the liquid sheet surface.

Preparation of gas-atomized Fe-based alloy powders and HVOF sprayed coatings

  • High-pressure gas atomization was employed to prepare the Fe-based $Fe_{50}Cr_{24}Mo_{21}Si_2B_3$ alloy powder. The effect of flow rate of atomizing gas on the median powder diameter was studied. The results show that the powder size decreased with increasing the flow rate of atomizing gas. Fe-based alloy coatings with amorphous phase fraction was then prepared by high velocity oxygen fuel spraying (HVOF) of gas atomized $Fe_{50}Cr_{24}Mo_{21}Si_2B_3$ powder. Microstructural studies show that the coatings present dense layered structure and low porosity of 0.17% in about $200{\mu}m$ thickness. The Fe-based alloy coating exhibits an average hardness of about 1230 HV. Our results show that the HVOF process results in dense and well-bonded coatings, making it attractive for protective coatings applications.

Production of Ultra-fine Metal Powder with Gas Atomization Processes

  • Experimental results of the metal powder production with internal mixing, internal impinging and the atomizer coupled with substrate design are presented in this paper. In a test with internal mixing atomizer, mean powder size was decreased from $37{\mu}m\;to\;23{\mu}m$ for Pb65Sn35 alloy as the gas-to-melt mass ratio was increased from 0.04 to 0.17. The particle size further reduces to $16.01{\mu}m$ as the orifice area is increased to $24mm^2$. The micrograph of the metal powder indicates that very fine and spherical metal powder has been produced by this process. In a test program using the internal impinging atomizers, the mean particle size of the metal powder was decreased from $22{\mu}m\;to\;12{\mu}m$ as the gas-to-melt-mass ratio increased from 0.05 to 0.22. The test results of an atomizer coupled with a substrate indicates that the deposition rate of the molten spray on the substrate is controlled by the diameter of the substrate, the height of the substrate ring and the distance of the substrate from the outlet of the atomizer. This in rum determines the powder production rate of the spraying processes. Experimental results indicate that the deposition rate of the spray forming material decreases as the distance between the substrate and the atomizer increases. For example, the deposition rate decreases from 48% to 19% as the substrate is placed at a distance from 20cm to 40cm. On the other hand, the metal powder production rate and its particle size increases as the subsrate is placed far away from the atomizer. The production of metal powder with mean particle size as low as $3.13{\mu}m$ has been achieved, a level which is not achievable by the conventional gas atomization processes.
