  • The present work is an attempt to evaluate the relationship between dendrite arm spacing and average cooling rate in gasatomized $Al_{87.3}misch$ $metal_{8.3}Ni_{4.4}$ powder by means of the following methods. One is calculation of heat transfer coefficient and average cooling rate, which are derived from estimated particle velocity during gas-atomization. The other is measurement of secondary dendrite arm spacing, which are observed on the particle surface. Then, we make experimental equation for this relationship in case of permanent mold casting and compare it with similar equation in case of rapidly solidified powder. Both average cooling rates and solidification rates are considered to represent the variance of dendrite arm spacings in two types soidification route. Even though there is a considerable difference in each average cooling rate, the dendrite arm spacing values are similar in two cases; particle diameter, $100\;{\mu}m$, and casting width, 2.05 mm. It is because that each solidification route has similar solidification rate.

미분무수 특성이 화재억제 메커니즘에 미치는 영향에 대한 수치해석적 연구 (Numerical Study on the Effects of Spray Properties of Water Mist on the Fire Suppression Mechanism)

  • The numerical investigation on the effects of water-mist characteristics has been carried out for the fire suppression mechanism. The FDS are used to simulate the interaction of fire plume and water mists, and program describes the fire-driven flows using LES turbulence model, the mixture fraction combustion model, the finite volume method of radiation transport for a non-scattering gray gas, and conjugate heat transfer between wall and gas flow. The numerical model is consisted of a rectangular enclosure of $L{\times}W{\times}H=1.5{\times}1.5{\times}2.0m^3$ and a water mist nozzle that be installed 1.8 m from fire pool. In the present study, the parameters of nozzle for simulation are the droplet size and the spray velocity. The droplet size influences to fire flume on fire suppression more than the spray velocity because of the effect of the terminal velocity. The optimal condition for fire suppression is that the droplet size and the spray velocity are $100{\mu}m$ and 20 m/s respectively.

  • The performance characteristics of lean burn system in gasoline engine are mainly affected by the air-fuel mixture in cylinder, gas exchange process of manifold system, exhaust emission of engine, and the electronic engine control system. In order to obtain the effect of performance factors on the optimum conditions of lean burn engine, this study deal with the behavior of mixture formation, gas flow characteristics of air, flow and evaporation analysis of spray droplet in cylinder, vaporization and burning characteristics of lean mixture in the engine, and the control performance of electronic engine control system. The optimum flow conditions were investigated with the swirl and tumble flows in the combustion chamber with swirl control valve. The performance characteristics and optimum condition of flow field in intake system were analyzed by the investigation of inlet flow of air and combustion stabilization on cylinder.

  • The LPG(Liquefied Petroleum Gas) fuel attracts attention as a clean alternative fuel. In order to further reduce the exhaust emission and improve performance in LPG engines, the LPLi(Liquid Phase LPG Injection) system is used. In LPLi system, the fuel pump performance is important for keeping the LPG over it's saturated vapor pressure. An external fuel pump is needed to improve the durability for LPG engines. This paper predicted the variation of fuel properties on the LPLi system with an external fuel pump. From each component's thermodynamic model, an 1-D simulation is developed for LPLi system with an external fuel pump. Then the 1-D simulation data analyzed and compared with the rig-test. The 1-D simulation and the rig-test produced similar results.

  • The microstructure of the extruded Al-20Si bars showed a homogeneous distribution of eutectic Si and primary Si particles embedded in the Al matrix. The grain size of ${\alpha}-Al$ varied from 150 to 600 nm and the size of the eutectic Si and primary Si in the extruded bars was about 100 - 200 nm. The room temperature tensile strength of the alloy with a powder size $<26{\mu}m$ was 322 MPa, while for the coarser powder ($45-106{\mu}m$) it was 230 MPa. With decreasing powder size from $45-106{\mu}m$ to $<26{\mu}m$, the specific wear of all the alloys decreased significantly at all sliding speeds due to the higher strength achieved by ultrafine-grained constituent phases. The fracture mechanism of failure in tension testing and wear testing was also studied.

A Review on Spray Characteristics of Biobutanol and Its Blended Fuels in IC engines

  • This review will be concentrated on the spray characteristics of biobutanol and its blends fuels in internal combustion engines including compression ignition, spark ignition and gas turbine engines. Butanol can be produced by fermentation from sucrose-containing feedstocks, starchy materials and lignocellulosic biomass. Among four isomers of butanol, n-butanol and iso-butanol has been used in CI and SI engines. This is due to higher octane rating and lower water solubility of both butanol compared with other isomers. The researches on the spray characteristics of neat butanol can be classified into the application to CI and SI engines, particularly GDI engine. Two empirical correlations for the prediction of spray angle for butanol as a function of Reynolds number was newly suggested. However, the applicability for the suggested empirical correlation is not yet proved. The butanol blended fuels used for the investigation of spray characteristics includes butanol-biodiesel blend, butanol-gasoline blend, butano-jet A blend and butanol-other fuel blends. Three blends such as butanol/ethanol, butanol/heptane and butanol/heavy fuel oil blends are included in butanol-other fuel blends. Even though combustion and emission characteristics of butanol/diesel fuel blend in CI engines were broadly investigated, study on spray characteristics of butanol/diesel fuel blend could not be found in the literature. In addition, the more study on the spray characteristics of butanol /gasoline blend is required.

SPRAY AND COMBUSTION CHARACTERISTICS OF HYDROCARBON FUEL INJECTED FROM PRESSURE-SWIRL NOZZLES

  • This paper presents spray and combustion characteristics of hydrocarbon fuel injected from pressure-swirl nozzles. Three commercial nozzles with orifice diameters of 0.256, 0.308 and 0.333mm and injection pressures ranging from 0.7 to 1.3 MPa were selected f9r the experiments. Spray characteristics such as breakup length. spray angle and drop size (SMD) were analyzed using photo image analyses and Malvern Panicle Size Analyzer. The drop size was measured with and without a blower at the same measuring locations. The flame length and width were measured using photo image analyses. The temperature distribution along the axial distance and the gas emission such as CO, $CO_2\;and\;NO_x$ were studied. The breakup length decreased with an increase in injection pressure for each nozzle but increased with an increase in nozzle orifice diameter. The spray angle increased and SMD decreased with an increase in injection pressure. The flame with an increased linearly with an increase in injection pressure and in nozzle orifice diameter. The flame temperature increased with an increase in injection pressure but decreased along the axial distance. The maximum temperatures occurred closer to the burner exit and flame at axial distance of 242mm from the diffuser tip. The experimental results showed that the level of CO decreased while that of $CO_2\;and\;NO_x$ increased with an increase in injection pressure and nozzle orifice diameter.

엔진회전속도의 변화가 HCCI엔진연소에 미치는 영향에 관한 수치해석 연구 (The Research about Engine Speed change Effect on HCCI Engine Combustion by Numerical Analysis)

  • In HCCI Engine, combustion is affected by change of compression speed corresponding to engine speed. The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanism of influence of engine speed on HCCI combustion characteristics by using numerical analysis. At first, the influence of engine speed was shown. And then, in order to clarify the mechanism of influence of engine speed, results of kinetics computations were analyzed to investigate the elementary reaction path for heat release at transient temperatures by using contribution matrix. In results, as engine speed increased, in-cylinder gas temperature and pressure at ignition start increased. And ignition start timing was retarded and combustion duration was lengthened on crank angle basis. On time basis, ignition start timing was advanced and combustion duration was shortened. High engine speed showed higher robustness to change of initial temperature than low engine speed. Because of its high robustness, selecting high engine speed was efficient for keeping stable operation in real engine which include variation of initial temperature by various factors. The variation of engine speed did not change the reaction path. But, as engine speed increased, the temperature that each elementary reaction would be active became high and reaction speed quicken. Rising the in-cylinder gas temperature of combustion start was caused by these gaps of temperature.

Experimental Studies on Self-Oscillation of a Swirl Coaxial Injector

  • The spray and acoustic characteristics by the self-oscillation of a swirl coaxial injector were experimentally studied. The self-oscillation of a swirl coaxial injector is defined as pressure and flowrate oscillations by a time-delayed feedback between liquid and gas phase and has strong influences on atomization and mixing processes. Hence the occurrence and effect of the self-oscillation are measured using shadow photography technique, acoustic test and PDPA. The occurrence of self-oscillation largely depends on the injection conditions, such as pressure drop of liquid phase and relative momentum ratio. From the experimental results, self-oscillation occurs when the momentum of gas phase is enough large and the smaller the pressure drop of liquid phase is, the better self-oscillation occurs at the same momentum ratio. The self-oscillation is also affected by injector geometries, increasing the recess length results in the expansion of self-oscillation region and the increase of sound pressure level. The self-oscillation of a swirl coaxial injector accompanies a high intensity scream and this scream may provide harmful disturbances to combustion processes. Self-oscillation leads to strong changes in the drop size distribution and smoothly varies the slope of radial SMD distribution.

가스분무 Mg-Zn-Y 합금분말의 압출거동 (Extrusion Behavior of Gas Atomized Mg Alloy Powders)

  • This work is to report not only the effect of rapid solidification of $MgZn_{4.3}Y_{0.7}$ alloys on the micro-structure, but also the extrusion behavior on the materials properties. The average grain size of the atomized powders was about $3-4{\mu}m$. The alloy powders of $Mg_{97}Zn_{4.3}Y_{0.7}$, consisted of I-Phase (Icosahedral, $Mg_{3}Zn_{6}Y_{1}$) as well as Cubic structured W-Phase ($Mg_{3}Zn_{3}Y_{2}$), which was finely distributed within ${\alpha}-Mg$ matrix. The oxide layer formed along the Mg surface was about 48 nm in thickness. In order to study the consolidation behavior of Mg alloy powders, extrusion was carried out with the area reduction ratio of 10:1 to 20:1. As the ratio increased, fully deformed and homogeneous microstructure could be obtained, and the mechanical properties such as tensile strength and elongation were simultaneously increased.
