CdS semiconductor quantum dot (QD) structures in aqueous solution are fabricated by using a gamma-ray irradiation technique and their optical absorption spectra are investigated. Cadmium sulfate solution, 2-mercaptoethanol solution, and reducing agent $e^{-}_{aq}$ are employed to produce CdS molecules, leading to CdS quantum dots. The measured linear absorption spectra before and after g-ray irradiation clearly show exciton peaks between 300 nm and 400 nm, which indicate the formation of CdS QD's. It is also observed that the exciton peaks are red-shifted with increasing the g-ray irradiation time from 5 min to 15 min. Therefore, it is concluded that the mean QD sizes can be systematically controlled with the dosage of the g-ray irradiation.

A fiber-optic beta/gamma dual detector system with two types of sensing probes was fabricated to detect the beta- and gamma-rays simultaneously. As scintillators of the sensing probe type 1, two different inorganic scintillators, $CaF_2(Eu)$ and LYSO(Ce) crystals, were used to obtain the each scintillating efficiency with respect to beta-and gamma-rays and the inherent energy spectra of radioactive isotopes. In the case of the sensing probe type 2, which is composed of two identical inorganic scintillators and a beta shielding material based on the lead, it could discriminate beta- and gamma-rays using a subtraction method. In conclusion, we demonstrated that the proposed fiber-optic beta/gamma dual detector could measure and discriminate beta- and gamma-rays using both energy spectroscopy and subtraction method.
The program of performing a fast and automatic analysis of gamma ray spectra obtained by a Multi-Channel Analyzer (MCA) is developed for the surveillance of the nuclear fuel integrity. The integrity of the nuclear fuel is confirmed by the measurement of the radiation level of the reactor coolant through the real time monitoring and the periodic sampling analysis. In Yonggwang nuclear power plane 3 and 4, the Process Radiation Monitoring System (PRMS), which is a real time monitoring system, provides a measure of the fuel integrity. Currently, its spectrometer channel can identify only one radionuclide at a time since the signal processing unit of the spectrometer channel is a Single Channel Analyzer (SCA). To improve the PRMS, it is necessary to substitute the MCA for the SCA The program is operated in a real time mode and an on-demand mode, and automatically performed for all procedures. The test results by using the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) mixed standard source are in good agreement with those from Canberra System 100 which is a commercial MCA Consequently, the developed program seems to be employed for automatic monitoring of gamma rays in nuclear power plants.
A basic characterization of uranium samples was performed using gamma- and X-ray spectroscopy. The studied uranium samples were eight types of certified reference materials with $^{235}U$ enrichments in the range of 1-97%, and the measurements were performed over 24 h using a high-resolution and high-purity planar germanium detector. A general peak analysis of the spectrum and the $XK_{\alpha}$ region of the uranium spectra was carried out by using HyperGam and HyperGam-U, respectively. The standard reference sources were used to calibrate the spectroscopy system. To obtain the absolute detection efficiency, an effective solid angle code, EXVol, was run for each sample. Hence, the peak activities and isotopic activities were determined, and then, the total U content and $^{234}U$, $^{235}U$, and $^{238}U$ isotopic contents were determined and compared with those of the certified reference values. A new method to determine the model age based on the ratio of the activities of $^{223}Ra$ and $^{235}U$ in the sample was studied, and the model age was compared with the known true age. In summary, the present study developed a method for basic characterization of uranium samples by nondestructive gamma-ray spectrometry in 24 h and to obtain information on the sample age.
When gamma-camera sensor modules, which are key components of radiation imagers, are derived from the coupling between scintillators and photosensors, the light collection efficiency is an important factor in determining the effectiveness with which the instrument can identify nuclides via their derived gamma-ray spectra. If the pixel area of the scintillator is larger than the pixel area of the photosensor, light loss and cross-talk between pixels of the photosensor can result in information loss, thereby degrading the precision of the energy estimate and the accuracy of the position-of-interaction determination derived from each active pixel in a coded-aperture based gamma camera. Here we present two methods to overcome the information loss associated with the loss of photons created by scintillation pixels that are coupled to an associated silicon photomultiplier pixel. Specifically, we detail the use of either: (1) light guides, or (2) scintillation pixel areas that match the area of the SiPM pixel. Compared with scintillator/SiPM couplings that have slightly mismatched intercept areas, the experimental results show that both methods substantially improve both the energy and spatial resolution by increasing light collection efficiency, but in terms of the image sensitivity and image quality, only slight improvements are accrued.
A great variety of nuclear gamma rays emitted from fission and activation products of spent nuclear fuel contains much information that can be elicited without affecting the integrity of the fuel elements. But the extraction of such information from the complex spectrum is difficult and requires computer codes. In the present work, a versatile code 'CAERI' was developed which locates peaks and calculates their areas for X-rays as well as gamma rays using elegant features of some widely used programs for gamma-ray peak fitting. 'CAERI' coded in FORTRAN used infinite series approximation more accurate than other workers various, simple, piecewise series approximations for evaluations of the Voigt function which represents the X-ray peak with non-negligible natural line width. 'CAERI' can handle even a complex multiplet consisting of peaks from X-rays and gamma rays in arbitrary mixture, which one often encounters in the isotopic analysis of heavy elements such as U and Pu. The results of the fitting performed on the test spectra of $^{177m}\;Lu\;{\gamma}-ray\;and\;^{235}U\;K_{\alpha}$X-ray show good agreement with those by previous workers.
Gallium Nitride (GaN) powders were synthesized by calcining a gallium(III) sulfate salt in flowing ammonia in the temperature range 500-1100$^{\circ}C$. The process of conversion of the salt to GaN was monitored by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The salt decomposed to ${\gamma}$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ and then converted to GaN without ${\gamma}$-${\beta}$Ga$_2$O$_3$ phase transition. Variations in XRD patterns and weight loss of samples with temperature indicate that the conversion of ${\gamma}$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ to GaN does not proceed through Ga$_2$O but stepwise via amorphous gallium oxynitride (GaO$\_$x/N$\_$y/) as intermediates. Room-temperature photoluminescence spectra of GaN powders obtained showed the emission peak at 363 nm and no yellow band.

The effects of the evaporation rate of MgO films using an electron beam on the MgO properties and the discharge characteristics of a plasma display panel (PDP) were investigated and analyzed. MgO films were deposited with the various MgO evaporation rates. The MgO properties such as the crystal orientation, the surface roughness, and the film structure were inspected using XRD (X-ray diffraction), AFM (atomic force microscopy). From the experiments and Paschen law, the maximum value of the secondary electron emission coefficient $({\gamma})$ was obtained at the evaporation rate of $5{\AA}/sec$. The XRD results and cathode-luminescence (CL) spectra show the ${\gamma}$ values are correlated with F/F+ centers of the molecular structure of MgO films. The minimum firing voltage and the maximum luminous efficiency were obtained at an evaporation rate of $5{\AA}/sec$. In the MgO film deposited at $5{\AA}/sec$, the (200) orientation and F+ center were most intensive.

A method for calibrating the energy scale and detection efficiency of stilbene scintillators is presented herein. This method can be used to quantitatively analyze the Compton continuum of gamma-ray spectra obtained using such scintillators. First, channel-energy calibration was conducted by fitting a semi-empirical equation for the Compton continuum to the acquired energy spectrum and a new method to evaluate the intrinsic detection efficiency, called intrinsic Compton efficiency, of stilbene scintillators was proposed. The validity of this method was verified by changing experimental conditions such as the number of sources being measured simultaneously and the detector-source distance. According to the energy calibration, the standard error for the estimated Compton edge position was ±1.56 keV. The comparison of the intrinsic Compton efficiencies calculated from the single- and two-source spectra showed that the mean absolute difference and the mean absolute percentage difference are 0.031 %p and 0.557%, respectively, demonstrating reasonable accuracy of this method. The feasibility of the method was confirmed for an energy range of 0.5-1.5 MeV, showing that stilbene scintillators can be used to quantitatively analyze gamma rays in mixed-radiation fields.
The effect of ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation on the color of nucleus and cultured pearls was investigated. After ($^{60}Co$) ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation on the pearl nucleus, its color was altered from brownish to blackish brown or gray depending on irradiation dose. It was clearly found that the all samples are composed of aragonite. ESR spectra were based on the measurement of the paramagnetic species $CO_2$-radicals by the interaction with the ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation in $Mn^{2+}$ containing $CaCO_3$. In this study, we investigated optimal detection method of ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation to establish destructive or non-destructive test for pearl nucleus.
