We use the outer gap model to explain the spectrum and the energy dependent light curves of the X-ray and soft ${\gamma}$-ray radiations of the spin-down powered pulsar PSR B1509-58. In the outer gap model, most pairs inside the gap are created around the null charge surface and the gap's electric field separates the opposite charges to move in opposite directions. Consequently, the region from the null charge surface to the light cylinder is dominated by the outflow current and that from the null charge surface to the star is dominated by the inflow current. We suggest that the viewing angle of PSR B1509-58 only receives the inflow radiation. The incoming curvature photons are converted to pairs by the strong magnetic field of the star. The X-rays and soft ${\gamma}$-rays of PSR B1509-58 result from the synchrotron radiation of these pairs. The magnetic pair creation requires a large pitch angle, which makes the pulse profile of the synchrotron radiation distinct from that of the curvature radiation. We carefully trace the pulse profiles of the synchrotron radiation with different pitch angles. We find that the differences between the light curves of different energy bands are due to the different pitch angles of the secondary pairs, and the second peak appearing at E > 10 MeV comes from the region near the star, where the stronger magnetic field allows the pair creation to happen with a smaller pitch angle.

In this paper, we are proposing an optimal design of wideband pulsed type gamma-ray sensors. These sensors were manufactured based on the design results and after word electrical properties were analyzed. The sensor input parameters were derived on the basis of pulsed gamma-ray spectrum and time-dependent energy rate, and the output current which were derived on the basis of the sensor sensitivity control circuit. Pulsed gamma-ray sensors were designed using the TCAD simulators. The design results show that the optimal Epi layer thickness is 45um with the applied voltage 3.3V and the diameter is 2.0mm. The doping concentrations are as follows : N-type is an Arsenic as $1{\times}10^{19}/cm^3$, P-type is a Boron as $1{\times}10^{19}/cm^3$ and Epi layer is Phosphorus as $3.4{\times}10^{12}/cm^3$. The fabricated sensor was a leakage current, 12pA at voltage -3.3V and fully depleted mode at voltage -5V. A test result of pulsed radiation shows that the sensor gives out the optimal photocurrent.
Accurate measurement of uranium enrichment is very important in nuclear material accountability. The analysis uncertainty of the uranium enrichment measurement with gamma-ray analysis was studied in the present work. FRAM (Fixed energy Response function Analysis with Multiple efficiencies) code was used to determine the uranium enrichment. If the shield materials were placed between the detector and the sample, the error was measured and analyzed. Measurement time was varied and the dependency of the analysis uncertainty on the measurement time was studied. Transmitted gamma-ray intensities and FWHMs of the peaks in the energy spectrum were measured as the shield thickness was varied. The transmitted gamma-ray intensity follows shape of the exponential function, and the FWHM was almost independent of the shield thickness. The uncertainty of FRAM analysis was studied when the thick shield material was placed between the detector and the sample. Our work could be helpful in analysis of the fissile material in uranium sample.
Alnine pellets were installed in a nuclear power plant for one or two operation cycles and measured by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometers for dosimetry. Dose and "x/y ratio", i.e., satellite peak over main center peak ratio, were measured for the returned alanine dosimeters from the nuclear power plant and compared to the values of reference alanine dosimeters exposed only to gamma rays. The variation of the x/y ratio change depended on the population of radicals from each radiation component with different LET. The gamma dose in a mixed radiation field was estimated by an additive gamma ray irradiation experiment and the measured dose rate at specified locations in the containment building.
We explore how wave-particle interactions affect diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) at astrophysical shocks by performing time-dependent kinetic simulations, in which phenomenological models for magnetic field amplification (MFA), Alfv$\acute{e}$nic drift, thermal leakage injection, Bohm-like diffusion, and a free escape boundary are implemented. If the injection fraction of cosmic-ray (CR) particles is ${\xi}$ > $2{\times}10^{-4}$, for the shock parameters relevant for young supernova remnants, DSA is efficient enough to develop a significant shock precursor due to CR feedback, and magnetic field can be amplified up to a factor of 20 via CR streaming instability in the upstream region. If scattering centers drift with Alfv$\acute{e}$n speed in the amplified magnetic field, the CR energy spectrum can be steepened significantly and the acceleration efficiency is reduced. Nonlinear DSA with self-consistent MFA and Alfv$\acute{e}$nic drift predicts that the postshock CR pressure saturates roughly at ~10 % of the shock ram pressure for strong shocks with a sonic Mach number ranging $20{\leq}M_s{\leq}100$. Since the amplified magnetic field follows the flow modification in the precursor, the low energy end of the particle spectrum is softened much more than the high energy end. As a result, the concave curvature in the energy spectra does not disappear entirely even with the help of Alfv$\acute{e}$nic drift. For shocks with a moderate Alfv$\acute{e}$n Mach number ($M_A$ < 10), the accelerated CR spectrum can become as steep as $E^{-2.1}$ - $E^{-2.3}$, which is more consistent with the observed CR spectrum and gamma-ray photon spectrum of several young supernova remnants.
GESS-a computer code for simulation of energy spectra for gamma-ray in NaI(T1) scintillator has been developed. The Monte Carlo method was employed to simulate physical behaviours of particle transport in a medium. In the processes of simulation, all the interaction processes such as Rayleigh and Compton scattering, photoelectric effect and pair production were considered. The resulting electron slowing down spectrum was also considered with the CSDA model. For the purpose of verification of the code, a measurement gamma spectrum for incident gamma energy of 1.33 MeV was performed. The measured values appeared to be slightly higher than the theoretically calculated values.
To investigate the mutational spectrum of laccase (Lac) genes (lac -A and lac -B) involved in degrading lignin which is the recalcitrant cell wall polymer, the genes of the Pleurotus ostreatus mutants induced by gamma ray radiation were amplified by PCR and were cloned. All partial lac-A genes of 4 mutants (PO-6, -7, -14 and -15) consisted of 1763 base pairs due to the deletion of two bases (491-nt and 492-nt) and addition of one base (875-nt) in 1764 base pairs of lac -A gene of PO-1. Totally 36 mutational hot spots were detected and 32 positions were mutated in all of those 4 mutants simultaneously. These mutations were predominantly A : T -> G : C transitions (40%). Putative amino acid sequences of lac -A genes of mutants have one simultaneous mutated residue (from Thr-44 to Ala-44). The 1764 bp of partial lac -B gene was cloned only in PO -5 mutant and contained 19 mutated bases. These mutations were predominantly G : C->A : T transitions (45%). Lac-B protein of PO-5 has two mutated residues of Glu-290 and His-363 from Ala-290 and Phe-363, respectively. The hyper-mutational positions were concentrated in specific regions of between 50-nt and 900-nt in lac genes. These results suggested that the mutational hotspots responded to gamma radiation could be in some genes, at least lac -A and lac -B of p. ostreatus.
A great variety of nuclear gamma rays emitted from fission and activation products of spent nuclear fuel contains much information that can be elicited without affecting the integrity of the fuel elements. But the extraction of such information from the complex spectrum is difficult and requires computer codes. In the present work, a versatile code 'CAERI' was developed which locates peaks and calculates their areas for X-rays as well as gamma rays using elegant features of some widely used programs for gamma-ray peak fitting. 'CAERI' coded in FORTRAN used infinite series approximation more accurate than other workers various, simple, piecewise series approximations for evaluations of the Voigt function which represents the X-ray peak with non-negligible natural line width. 'CAERI' can handle even a complex multiplet consisting of peaks from X-rays and gamma rays in arbitrary mixture, which one often encounters in the isotopic analysis of heavy elements such as U and Pu. The results of the fitting performed on the test spectra of $^{177m}\;Lu\;{\gamma}-ray\;and\;^{235}U\;K_{\alpha}$X-ray show good agreement with those by previous workers.
The characteristic X-rays emitted from materials after gamma ray exposure was simulated and measured. A CdTe semiconductor detector and a $^{57}Co$ radiation source were used for energy spectroscopy. The types of materials could be identified by comparing the measured energy spectrum with the theoretical X-ray transition energy of the material. The sample composition was represented by the $K_{\alpha1}$-line (Siegbahn notations), which has the highest intensity among the characteristic X-rays of each atom. The difference between the theoretic prediction and the experimental result of K-line measurement was < 0.61% even if the characteristic X-rays from several materials were measured simultaneously. 2D images of the mixed materials were acquired with very high selectivity.
The background spectrum of a $3^{{\prime}{\prime}}{\times}3^{{\prime}{\prime}}$ NaI(Tl) well-type scintillation SILENA detector was measured without shielding, in 6 cm thick lead shielding, and with 2 mm thick electrolytic copper covering the detector inside the lead shielding. The relative remaining background of the lead shield lined with copper was found to be ideal for low-level environmental radioactive spectroscopy. The background total count rate in the (20-2160 KeV) was reduced 28.7 times by the lead and 29 times by the Cu + Pb shielding. The effective reduction of background (1.04) by the copper mainly appeared in the energy range from X-ray up to 500 KeV, while for the total energy range the ratio is 1.01 relative to the lead only. In addition, a strong relation between the full-energy peak absolute efficiency and the detector well height was found using gamma-ray isotropic radiation point sources placed inside the detector well. The full-energy peak efficiency at a midpoint of the well (at 2.5 cm) is three times greater than that on the detector surface. The energy calibrations and the resolution of any single energy line are independent of the locations of the gamma source inside or outside of the well.
