  • We proposed a mixed-mode design with a landline survey and mobile survey as the solution for the problems of election opinion polls by the original telephone survey method, mostly with limited population coverage for young people not living at home and with lower efficiency in selecting valid voters. We numerically verified the applicability of the proposed dual frame survey by analyzing the preliminary opinion poll results of the Seoul mayor by-election of October 26 2011. This research achieved the result that relative standard errors were similar between a mobile RDD sample and landline RDD sample though the variance was bigger in the former. Though the combination of mobile RDD and landline RDD is not found to improve the forecast accuracy, it still is expected to have higher reliability for election polls by expanding the population coverage and compensating the weakness of each survey method.

  • Conducting face-to-face surveys is difficult and cost prohibitive, necessitating a new attempt to build a probability-based panel in South Korea. Since 99.9% of adult Koreans own a mobile phone, mobile phone numbers provide a viable sampling frame. Random digit dialing (RDD) surveys were conducted August-December 2021. Of the 288,056 valid phone numbers dialed, 13,655 respondents between the ages of 19 and 69 completed a phone survey. These respondents were later invited by text message to join a panel; 3,202 of these (23.4% or 1.2% based on the number initially contacted) joined the panel. When compared to official government statistics like resident registration data, the census, or the Social Survey, this new probability-based panel can be said to be representative of the Korean population on the basis of age, gender, location, marital status, and household size after weighting is applied. However, even after weighting, panel members are more educated than the general population, white-collar workers and self-employed people are overrepresented, and blue-collar workers are underrepresented. As of February 2023, this panel has grown to 10,471 participants with plans to continue to invite more panel members in the same way. Based on the comparisons in this paper, we can regard this panel as a cost-effective, probability-based panel that may be used for various kinds of public opinion research, by researchers both within and outside of Korea. As we continue to refine and grow this panel, we hope it will become more widely used by researchers as well as provide a model for those building similar panels in other countries.

  • The main purpose of this study was to identify the problems and the effectiveness of public rental housing constructed by private construction company. To accomplish this, the current situation and the residents' perception were compared between public rental housing and private rental housing through the analysis of existing data collected in March 2005 by Gallup Korea and submitted to Korea Housing Corporate. The results showed that public rental housing contributed to the housing stability for the low income households. Most of the respondents were satisfied with their current housing. The burden of housing cost such as amount of Chunse deposit, however, still needs to be lessened

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate national fire safety consciousness (FSC). A FSC survey would help with proper fire safety policy. Indicators to define and measure efficiently the FSC were broken down into five areas: prevention, alarm, evacuation, extinguishing, and damage expansion prevention. The indicators were developed using Parasuraman's method based on domestic and foreign research materials and meetings with experts. FSC was surveyed using the indicators on Gallup Korea. The results of the survey analysis show that evacuation is lowest, followed by extinguishing, alarm, prevention, and damage expansion prevention.

  • Even though many Korean consumers have bought environment-friendly fruits, including grapes and mandarins, farmers and suppliers still have little information about how they make a decision for the actual purchase in the real markets. Without the suitable information of purchase behavior of environment-friendly fruits, farmers and suppliers cannot set up the efficient marketing strategy which can create the better agricultural products for Korean consumers. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the consumers' purchase behavior of environment-friendly fruits in Korea. Especially, this study was focused on the grapes and mandarins, through the survey research and the frequency analysis. The results of study in this paper present a few findings useful as follows: First, Korean consumers have the strong concern of environment-friendly agricultural products, including fruits. Second, consumers usually buy environment-friendly fruits by two times per month. Third, consumers generally concern taste, freshness, and food-safety, when they buy environment-friendly grape or mandarin.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify levels of health literacy and examine the effects of health literacy and self-care activities on quality of life of patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: A cross sectional design was used. Questionnaires were administered via the Gallup to 500 Korean patients with diabetes in Seoul and Gyeonggi areas. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t tests, one way ANOVA, and hierarchical regression. Results: Of 500 patients, 12.4% (n=62) indicated 'inadequate' health literacy, and 43.8% (n=219) reported 'marginal' or 'adequate' health literacy. Levels of health literacy significantly differed by demographic characteristics, self-care activities, and quality of life. The factors that had a significant effect on quality of life included inadequate health literacy (B=3.63, p=.042) and marginal health literacy (B=3.84, p=.002); however, no significant relationship was found for self-care activities (B=0.01, p=.827). Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate a need for further research with large samples using Korean Health Literacy Scale for Diabetes Mellitus to establish the relationships between health literacy, diabetes self-care activities, and quality of life.

  • Korean election polls has a history of fifteen years, which may seem too short while those of advanced countries such as the U.S and the UK has a history of one hundred fifty years. However, with various and creative attempts, some of the Korean research companies have developed election polls methods and theories which can be applied to Korean society. They also elevated accuracy of the election forecasts. In spite of short history the rational and scientific polls and forecasts done by some of the research companies including Gallup Korea are commented that they have improved the quality of Korean election culture. In the article, we will look into the process of the election polls which have been done seven times for 15 years, and then deal with the meaning of the election polls.

  • Purpose - In this study, we examine the factors related to the asset allocation decisions of individual investors who 1) directly invest in stocks or bonds, 2) indirectly invest in various fund products (excluding CMA and MMF), and 3) invest in both products. Design/methodology/approach - We collect a sample of 3,000 individual investors and investigate the factors influencing investment behavior, especially the diversification tendency in asset allocation, with the "Investor Behavior Survey" that is conducted jointly by the Korea Financial Investment Association and the Korea Gallup Research Institute in 2011 and 2012. Findings - Our regression analyses estimate the marginal effects of various factors such as the amount of total financial assets, monthly income, occupation, age, and gender. The results reveal that male investors with manual labor occupations were less inclined to diversify their investments compared to female investors in office jobs. Additionally, higher monthly income is associated with a greater inclination toward diversification. Therefore, if a positive relationship exists between income and educational level, we may suggest that higher educational levels lead to a greater tendency for diversification. Research implications or Originality - Interestingly, investors who engage in direct investments tend to exhibit a weaker diversification tendency as the amount of their direct investment increases. On the other hand, investors who engage in both direct and indirect investments show a weaker diversification tendency as the amount of total financial assets increases. This suggests that the investment style of investors is closely related to their diversification behavior.
