In order to investigate the origin of multiple stellar populations in the halo and bulge of the Milky Way, we have constructed chemical evolution models for the low-mass proto-Galactic subsystems such as globular clusters. Unlike previous studies, we assume that supernova blast waves undergo blowout without expelling the pre-enriched gas, while relatively slow winds of massive stars, together with the winds and ejecta from low and intermediate mass asymptotic-giant-branch stars, are all locally retained in these less massive systems. We find that the observed Na-O anti-correlations in metal-poor GCs can be reproduced when multiple episodes of starbursts are allowed to continue in these subsystems. A specific form of star formation history with decreasing time intervals between the stellar generations, however, is required to obtain this result, which is in good agreement with the parameters obtained from our stellar evolution models for the horizontal-branch. The "mass budget problem" is also much alleviated by our models without ad-hoc assumptions on star formation efficiency and initial mass function. We also applied these models to investigate the origin of super helium-rich red clump stars in the metal-rich bulge as recently suggested by Lee et al. (2015). We find that chemical enrichments by the winds of massive stars can naturally reproduce the required helium enhancement (dY/dZ = 6) for the second-generation stars. Disruption of proto-globular clusters in a hierarchical merging paradigm would have provided helium enhanced stars to the bulge field.
The aim of this study was to explore the role of galaxy mergers on the formation and evolution of galaxies in galaxy clusters. For this purpose, u', g', r' deep optical imaging and multi-object spectroscopic observation were done for four rich Abell clusters at z ${\lesssim}$ 0.1 (A119, A2670, A3330, and A389) with a MOSAIC 2 CCD and Hydra spectrograph mounted on a Blanco 4-m telescope at CTIO. With the deep images, we found that about 25% of the bright red-sequence galaxies exhibited post-merger signatures in a cluster environment. This fraction was much higher than what was expected from the results of the field environment (-35%, van Dokkum 2005) and significantly low on-going merger fractions (about one-fifth of the field) appeared in the clusters currently. Taking advantage of the most up-to-date semi-analytic model, the results indicate that most of the post-merger galaxies may have carried over their merger features from their previous halo environment. All the brightest cluster galaxies in our cluster samples revealed faint structures in their halos as well as multiple nuclei in their centers seen in the deep optical images. We suggest that the mass of the BCGs increased mainly though major mergers at recent epochs based on their post-merger signatures and the large gaps in the total magnitudes between the BCGs and the second-rank BCGs. A UV bright tidal tail and tidal dwarf galaxy (TDG) candidates around the post-merger galaxy, NGC 4922, were discovered in the outskirts of the Coma cluster using the GALEX UV data. We did two-component stellar population modeling for the TDG candidates and the results indicate that they are an early form of dwarf galaxies frequently found around massive early-type galaxies in clusters. In conclusion, we suggest that the mergers of galaxies are an important driving force behind galaxy formation and evolution in cluster environments even until recent epochs.
Low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LINER) galaxies constitute a major fraction of low-luminosity AGN population in the local Universe. In contrast to Seyfert galaxies, it is theoretically expected that LINERs would not have an outflow due to their low Eddington ratio. Using Keck/LRIS spectroscopy on a nearby LINER galaxy SDSS J091628.05+420818.7, we find a significant radial velocity offset for [OIII]${\lambda}$5007 emission line as - 50 km $s^{-1}$ blueshifted compared to systemic velocity of the galaxy, while other emission lines exhibit no or little offset. The observed [OIII] velocity offset possibly indicates an outflow of gas in the LINER galaxy, and it is probable that we only detected the [OIII] velocity offset because [OIII] ionization region is closer to the accretion disk, hence, more affected by an outflow. We further investigate the [OIII] velocity offset of -4000 SDSS AGN-host galaxies to compare the strength of AGN outflow. We find that a number of both LINER and Seyfert galaxies show [OIII] velocity offset, but the fraction of LINER galaxies with velocity offset is smaller than that of Seyfert galaxies. The preliminary results imply the presence of gas outflow in LINER galaxies, although outflow strength is probably weaker compared to Seyfert galaxies.
Galaxy clusters, the largest gravitationally bound systems, are an important subject of study to place constraints on cosmological models. Moreover, they are excellent places to test galaxy evolution models in connection to their environments. To date, massive clusters have been found unexpectedly (Kang & Im 2009; Gonzales et al. 2012) and the evolution of galaxies in clusters is still controversial (Elbaz et al. 2007; Faloon et al. 2013). Finding galaxy cluster candidates at z > 1 in a wide, deep imaging survey data will enable us to solve such issues of modern extragalactic astronomy. We report new candidate galaxy clusters in one of the wide and deep survey fields, the European Large Area ISO Survey North1 (ELAIS-N1) and North2 (ELAIS-N2) fields, covering a sky area of $8.75deg^2$ and $4.85deg^2$ each. We also suggest a new useful color selection technique to separate z > 1 galaxies from low - z galaxies by combining multi-wavelength data.
Horizon Run 5 (HR5) is a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation which captures the properties of the Universe on a Gpc scale while achieving a resolution of 1 kpc. This enormous dynamic range allows us to simultaneously capture the physics of the cosmic web on very large scales and account for the formation and evolution of dwarf galaxies on much smaller scales. Inside the simulation box. we zoom-in on a high-resolution cuboid region with a volume of 1049 × 114 × 114 Mpc3. The subgrid physics chosen to model galaxy formation includes radiative heating/cooling, reionization, star formation, supernova feedback, chemical evolution tracking the enrichment of oxygen and iron, the growth of supermassive black holes and feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the form of a dual jet-heating mode. For this simulation we implemented a hybrid MPI-OpenMP version of the RAMSES code, specifically targeted for modern many-core many thread parallel architectures. For the post-processing, we extended the Friends-of-Friend (FoF) algorithm and developed a new galaxy finder to analyse the large outputs of HR5. The simulation successfully reproduces many observations, such as the cosmic star formation history, connectivity of galaxy distribution and stellar mass functions. The simulation also indicates that hydrodynamical effects on small scales impact galaxy clustering up to very large scales near and beyond the baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale. Hence, caution should be taken when using that scale as a cosmic standard ruler: one needs to carefully understand the corresponding biases. The simulation is expected to be an invaluable asset for the interpretation of upcoming deep surveys of the Universe.
In understanding "cooling flow" problem and the galaxy-SMBH co-evolution, AGN feedback is considered as one of the most important phenomena. Among various AGN feedback phenomena, X-ray cavities are particularly useful for studying AGN feedback over 10 kpc scales, as the origin of X-ray cavities is believed to be related to radio jet from AGN. For a comprehensive study of X-ray cavities, we collect all available diffuse X-ray data of galaxies in various galaxy environments, ranging from field galaxies to galaxy clusters, using the Chandra X-ray data archive. As a result we build up a sample of 87 targets showing enough X-ray photons to perform the analysis. Using modeling and unsharp masking techniques, we detected X-ray cavities and measured their physical properties (i.e., cavity size) for the 49 targets. Here, we present X-ray cavity properties and discuss environmental effects.
Galaxy clusters, the largest gravitationally bound systems, are an important means to place constraints on cosmological models and study the evolution and formation of galaxies and their large scale distribution. We report results from our study of galaxy clusters in the European Large Area ISO Survey North1(ELAIS-N1) field, covering a sky area of 8.75 $deg^2$. We combine multi-wavelength data from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey Deep Extragalactic Survey (UKIDSS DXS, JK bands), Spitzer Wise-area InfraRed Extragalactic survey (SWIRE, Optical-Infrared bands), and CFHT (z band). The photometric redshifts are derived from these datasets and are used to search for high redshift galaxy cluster candidates. Finally, we provide new candidates of galaxy clusters at redshifts 1.0
We study galaxies drawn from the semi-analytic models of Guo et al. (2011) based on the Millennium Simulation. We establish a set of four observationally measurable parameters which can be used in combination to identify a subset of galaxy groups which are old, with a very high probability. We therefore argue that a sample of fossil groups selected based on the luminosity gap will result in a contaminated sample of old galaxy groups. By adding constraints on the luminosity of the brightest galaxy, and its offset from the group luminosity centroid, we can considerably improve the age-dating.
One day, a galaxy study suddenly came to me and became a friend of 40 years. The study of galaxies, which began with surface photometry of nearby galaxies, ended up in galaxy morphology through chemical and dynamical evolution of galaxies. All that deviated from the study of galaxies was the study of the open clusters. So it seems to me that I devoted my entire life to the study of galaxies. The most memorable one is the observation at Sobaeksan Observatory. Even though the heavy snow fell, I climbed Sobaeksan to meet galaxies. Galaxies observed at Kiso Observatory, DAO, and BOAO are now beyond memory, but I still enjoy seeing them. There are many memories, but the biggest pleasure I've had in my galaxy studies is when I've encountered the galactic conformity between host and its satellite galaxies. Eureka! Now the night sky is changing from the object of study to the object of awe. I will share this joy.
Intraclusterlight (ICL) is diffuse light from stars that are bound to the clusterpotential, not to individual member galaxies. Understanding the formationmechanism of ICL provides critical information on the assembly and evolution ofthe galaxy cluster. Although there exist several competing models, the dominantproduction mechanism is still in dispute. The ICL measurement between z=1 and 2strongly constrains the formation scenario of the ICL because the epoch is whenthe first mature clusters begin to appear. However, the number of high-redshiftICL studies is small mainly because of observational challenges. In this study, based on deep HST WFC3/IR data, we measured ICL of 10 galaxy clusters atredshift beyond unity, which nearly doubles the sample size in this redshiftregime. With careful handling of systematics including object masking, skyestimation, flatfielding, dwarf galaxy contamination, etc., we quantified thetotal amount of ICL, measured the color profile, and examined the transitionbetween BCG and ICL.
