  • Clusters of galaxies are believed to constitute a population of astrophysical objects potentially able to emit electromagnetic radiation up to gamma-ray energies. Evidence of the existence of non-thermal radiation processes in galaxy clusters is indicated from observations of diffuse radio halos, hard X-ray and EUV excess emission. The presence of cosmic ray acceleration processes and its confinement on cosmological timescales nearly inevitably yields in predicting energetic gamma-ray emission, either directly deduceably from a cluster's multifreqency emission characteristics or indirectly during large-scale cosmological structure formation processes. This theoretical reasoning suggests several scenarios to actually detect galaxy clusters at gamma-ray wavelengths: Either resolved as individual sources of point-like or extended gamma-ray emission, by investigating spatial-statistical correlations with unidentified gamma-ray sources or, if unresolved, through their contribution to the extragalactic diffuse gamma-ray background. In the following I review the situation concerning the proposed relation between galaxy clusters and high-energy gamma-ray observations from an observational point-of-view.

  • Based on optical galaxy data, we executed a systematic search for galaxy clusters around the 15 steady unidentified EGRET GeV gamma-ray sources in high Galactic-latitude sky ([b] > $30^{\circ}$). We found a strong correlation with 3.7$\sigma$ level between close cluster pairs (merging cluster candidates) and the unidentified EGRET sources, though, in contrast, no correlation with single clusters. This result implies that merging clusters of galaxies are a possible candidate for the origin of high galactic-latitude, steady unidentified EGRET gamma-ray sources.

  • We carried out photometric and spectroscopic observatious of the blue compact dwarf galaxy Haro 6 in the Virgo Cluster of Galaxies. The long-slit spectroscopy was employed at three position angles, $\Phi$=$0^{\circ}$, $\Phi$=$30^{\circ}$, and $\Phi$=$120^{\circ}$with CCD camera mounted on the Cassegrain Spectrograph. Based on the mean intrinsic axial ratio < $q_0$ >=0.3, we derived inclination I of the system as $44^{\circ}$using our composite V-band CCD image. Careful analysis on the velocity field of the system shows an asymptotically fiat rotation curve with the maximum rotational velocity $V(r)_{max}$ reaches about 12km/sec. The calculation of the dynamical mass of Haro 6 with a simple mass model is briefly discussed with emphasis on the mass to luminosity ratio. From the IRAS Point Source Cataloque, we derived dust-to-gas ratio which indicates relatively low dust content, thus tempting us to conjecture the youth of the system.

  • We mapped the $^{13}CO$ line in the dark nebula L134 using the 14-m Taeduck radio telescope with a 57 arcsec beam and one beam spacing. The cloud has a spherical shape with an intensity peak ridge extended from the northwest to the southeast directions. The halfwidth and the radial velocity of the lines peak at the region of the cloud center. The radial velocity decreases from the cloud center towards the north and south directions. The integrated line intensity distributions in the space-velocity plane show some structure and a velocity gradient. The $^{13}CO$ and $H_2CO$ clouds and dark clouds are closely related in space in shape, outer boundary, and intensity peak positions. The $^{13}CO$ integrated line intensity is linearly proportional to the visual extinction.

  • Recent wide and deep surveys allow us to investigate the large scale structure of the Universe at high redshift. We present studies of the clustering of high redshift galaxies, using reprocessed UKIDSS DXS catalogue. We measure the angular correlation function of high redshift galaxies which is Extremely Red Objects (EROs). Firstly we found that their angular correlation functions can be described by a broken power-law. We also found that red or bright samples are more strongly clustered than those having the opposite characteristics, and that old, passive EROs are found to be more clustered than dustry, star-forming EROs. Additionally the average halo mass and other properties were estimated using the halo model. Finally the observed clustering of EROs was compared with predictions from the cosmological simulation.

  • The positions of galaxies in comoving Cartesian space varies under different cosmological parameter choices, inducing a redshift-dependent scaling in the galaxy distribution. The shape of the two-point correlation of galaxies exhibits a significant redshift evolution when the galaxy sample is analyzed under a cosmology differing from the true, simulated one. In our previous works, we can made use of this geometrical distortion to constrain the values of cosmological parameters governing the expansion history of the universe. This current work is a continuation of our previous works as a strategy to constrain cosmological parameters using redshift-invariant physical quantities. We now aim to understand the redshift evolution of the full shape of the small scale, anisotropic galaxy clustering and give a firmer theoretical footing to our previous works.

  • Spiral structure in disk galaxies is modeled with ncollisionless N-body simulations including live disks, halos, and bulges with a range of masses. Two of these simulations make long-lasting and strong two-arm spiral wave modes that last for about 5 Gyr with constant pattern speed. These two had a light stellar disk and the largest values of the Toomre Q parameter in the inner region at the time the spirals formed, suggesting the presence of a Q-barrier to wave propagation resulting from the bulge. The relative bulge mass in these cases is about 10%. Models with weak two-arm spirals had pattern speeds that followed the radial dependence of the Inner Lindblad Resonance. In addition to these, we also report a few more cases where two-armed spirals are developed and are maintained for a several rotation time scales.

  • The redshift range $1.4{\lesssim}z{\lesssim}2.5$ is often called the 'redshift desert' because of the difficulties in measuring spectroscopic redshifts due to the shifting of the major spectroscopic features into near-infrared wavelength (Steidel et al. 2004). One of the most efficient and fast way to select galaxies at this redshift range is the BzK technique designed by Daddi et al. (2004). Combining deep BVRz data from Deep Lens Survey with the wide-field (~4.08 deg2) K-band image, we select 1200 star-forming BzKs (sBzKs) and 120 passive BzKs (pBzKs) at K < 21.25. We discuss about the photometric redshifts, star formation rates, and stellar mass of the selected BzKs. Possible large scale structure at $1.4{\lesssim}z$ < 1.6 based on the spatial distribution of the BzKs is also introduced.

  • The properties of unseen high-redshift sources (and sinks) are encoded in the 3D structure of the cosmic 21-cm signal. Here I introduce a flexible parametrization for high-z galaxies' properties, including their star formation rates, ionizing escape fraction and their evolution with the mass of the host dark matter halos. With this parametrization, I self-consistently calculate the corresponding 21-cm signal during reionization and the cosmic dawn. Using a Monte Carlo Markov Chain sampler of 3D simulations, 21CMMC, I demonstrate how combining high-z luminosity functions with a mock 21-cm signal can break degeneracies, resulting in ~ percent level constraints on early universe astrophysics.

  • Recent studies of galaxy clusters have shown that the galaxy clusters in dense environment tend to have lower star formation rate in local universe with z < 1. However, this correlation is not significant in galaxy clusters with z > 1. The study of galaxy clusters around z=1 can yield insight into cosmological galaxy evolution. Nevertheless, the identification of galaxy clusters beyond the scope of immediate local universe requires wide field data in optical and near-infrared bands. By incorporating data from Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey(CFHTLS) and Infrared Medium-Deep Survey(IMS), the photometric redshifts of galaxies in CFHTLS W2 field were calculated. Using spatial distribution and photometric redshifts, the galaxies in the field were divided into redshift bins. The image of each redshift bin was analyzed by measuring the number density within proper distance of 1Mpc. By comparing high density regions in consecutive redshift bins, we identified the cluster candidates and mapped the large-scale structure within the CFHTLS W2 field.
