INTERACTION OF HIGH VELOCITY CLOUDS WITH MAGNETIZED DISKS: THREE-DIMENSIONAL NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS

  • High-velocity clouds are flows of neutral hydrogen, located at high galactic latitudes, with large velocities ($[VLSR]{\ge} 100 km/s$) that do not match a simple model of circular rotation for our Galaxy. Numerical simulations have been performed for the last 20 years to study the details of their evolution, and their possible interaction with the Galactic disk. Here we present a brief review of the models that have been already published, and describe newly performed three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations.

Empirical Horizontal-Branch Loci of Galactic Globular Clusters in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

  • We present empirical fiducial sequences for horizontal-branch (HB) stars in a set of bright Galactic globular clusters previously observed in SDSS (An et al. 2008). Mean loci of HB stars are derived on color-magnitude diagrams with multiple color indices (u - g, g - r, g - i, and g - z ) in order to identify foreground/background objects as well as cluster RR Lyrae variables. We compare our fiducial sequences to the model predictions from Yonsei-Yale isochrones and test the accuracy of the stellar evolution models.

  • We have developed a new method to simulate the observed color magnitudediagrams for Galactic globular clusters. The model calculations include all evolutionary phases- from zero age main sequence to asymptotic giant branch. Using these models, we can simulate directly the observational errors and sampling effect and also can examine the stellar evolution theory in more$.$ realistic way. Implications of these model calculations on the recent space observations of globular clusters and other systems will be discussed.

The Key role of the Bulge Compactness in Star-forming Activity in Late-type Galaxies

  • Which mechanism governs star-formation activity in galaxies is still one of the most important, open questions in galactic astronomy. To address this issue, we investigate the specific star formation rate (sSFR) of late-type galaxies as functions of various structural parameters including the morphology, mass, radius, and mass compactness (MC). We use a sample of ~200,000 late-type galaxies with z = 0.02 ~ 0.2 from SDSS DR7 and a catalog of bulge-disk decomposition (Simard et al. 2011; Mendel et al. 2013). We find a remarkably strong correlation between bulge's MC and galaxy's sSFR, in the sense that galaxies with more compact bulge tend to be of lower sSFR. This seems counter-intuitive given that galactic sSFR is driven predominantly by disks rather than bulges and suggests that the central mass density plays a key role in recent star-forming activity. We discuss the physical cause of the new findings in terms of the bulge growth history and AGN activities.

A study of sub-galactic scale structure formation with a cosmological hydro code

  • To study the formation and evolution of sub-galactic scale structures, we have added SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) method into an existing cosmological PMTree code, GOTPM. To follow the evolution of gas particles, we consider heating/cooling processes, star formation, and energy & metal feedback by supernova explosion. We have performed various tests for the new code and found that the results reproduce observed quantities or follow the known analytic solutions. We present a test simulation of isolated disk galaxy with a focus on whether the star formation reproduces the observed features.

Numerical study on the evolution of the spin of spiral galaxies

  • We investigate the evolution of the galactic spin of spiral galaxies in various dynamical situations using the N-body/SPH simulations. To do this we first construct a Milky Way-like galaxy model. Then we perform both prograde and retrograde encounters between the spiral galaxy pair. We also conduct a simulation with our galaxy model in isolation for comparison. We find that the circular motion of the disk stars in the inner region of the galaxy decrease clearly when the galaxy experiences strong prograde interactions. Such decrease has not found when the galaxy experiences weak or no interactions. We compare our simulation results with recent observational studies on the galactic spins.

Automatic Searching Algorithm for Galactic HI at Forbidden Velocities in the Inner-Galaxy ALFA Low-Latitude HI (I-GALFA) Survey

  • The faint wing-like features at velocities beyond the velocity boundaries of the Galactic rotation (Forbidden-Velocity Wings, FVWs) in the large-scale position-velocity diagrams of the HI surveys are thought to be associated with dynamical Galactic events. The primary candidates of these FVWs are rapidly expanding HI shells of the old Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs), which are too faint to be visible in other frequencies. The unprecedented sensitivity and resolution of the I-GALFA survey enable detection of "all" HI shells of Galactic SNRs at forbidden velocities predicted by Koo and Kang (2004). Therefore, comparing the distribution of the FVWs visible in the I-GALFA survey and that of the model will improve our understanding on the interstellar medium and the evolution of SNRs. We have been developing an automatic searching algorithm for FVWs in the I-GALFA survey to minimize the selection effects of visual inspection used in the previous FVW study. We present the searching mechanism for FVWs and the statistical properties of the automatically searched FVWs. Also, we discuss the similarities and the differences between the distribution of the identified FVWs and that of the SNRs predicted by Koo and Kang (2004).
