Predictive Motion Control Method for Continuous Locomotion of Leg-Wheel Robot

  • This paper describes a gait algorithm and a velocity limitation method for a Leg-Wheel Robot. The gait algorithm enables the robot to preserve continuous locomotion even if the velocity command varies extensively. The velocity limitation method restricts the commanded velocity when it exceeds the mechanical limitation of the robot. Combined use of the velocity limitation method with the gait algorithm ensures the continuity of locomotion, and makes the gait pattern efficient with a long step length and low frequency of leg phase change. These methods can be applied to locomotion on unexplored rough terrain even if the range of roughness is unknown.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a portable gait-event detection system which is necessary for the cycle-to-cycle FES(functional electrical stimulation) control of locomotion. To make the system portable, we made following modifications in the gait signal measurement system. That is, 1) to make the system wireless using Bluetooth communication, 2) to make the system small-sized and battery-powered by using low power consumption ${\mu}$ P(ATmega8535L). The gait-events were analyzed in off-line at the main computer using ANN(Artificial Neural Network). The Proposed system showed no mis-detection of the gait-events of normal subject and hemiplegia subjects. The performance of the system was better than the previous wired-system.

An Efficient Stair Locomotion Method of Quadruped Robot with Mechanism of Insectile Leg (곤충형 다리 구조를 갖는 4족 로봇의 효율적인 계단 보행 방법)

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient gait trajectory generation method for the static stair climbing of a quadruped robot with mechanism of insectile legs, which has no collision with staris. First, we derive the kinematic and inverse models of a quadruped robot using the algebraic and geometrical methods, respectively. In the proposed method, we generate the stair locomotion trajectory of a sine wave after lifting a leg from the start position, and then determine the coefficient of the generated trajectory to avoid the collision with stairs. In addition, we make the gait sequence for the stable stair locomotion. Finally, we verify the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed stair locomotion method through computer simulations.

  • Quadruped robot is very useful mechanism for a various area. Recently, home entertainment and military robots adapted quadruped platform and useful function have been introduced. Our goal is the development of quadruped robot locomotion for any type of ground included to sloping one and irregular terrain. This paper, as a first step, deals with design and construction of quadruped robot walking on the flat ground. The most important factor of quadruped robot is stability of locomotion. At first, we introduce the developed quadruped robot based on dynamic simulation and experimental study of general gait algorithm. Finally, propose unique locomotion proper to our mechanism. Future work of this study is the performance test and analysis on the ground of various conditions and proposes the improved mechanism and gait algorithm.

Gait-Event Detection for FES Locomotion (FES 보행을 위한 보행 이벤트 검출)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a gait-event detection system, which is necessary for the cycle-to-cycle FES control of locomotion. Proposed gait event detection system consists of a signal measurement part and gait event detection part. The signal measurement was composed of the sensors and the LabVIEW program for the data acquisition and synchronization of the sensor signals. We also used a video camera and a motion capture system to get the reference gait events. Machine learning technique with ANN (artificial neural network) was adopted for automatic detection of gait events. 2 cycles of reference gait events were used as the teacher signals for ANN training and the remnants ($2\sim5$ cycles) were used fur the evaluation of the performance in gait-event detection. 14 combinations of sensor signals were used in the training and evaluation of ANN to examine the relationship between the number of sensors and the gait-event detection performance. The best combinations with minimum errors of event-detection time were 1) goniometer, foot-switch and 2) goniometer, foot-switch, accelerometer x(anterior-posterior) component. It is expected that the result of this study will be useful in the design of cycle-to-cycle FES controller.

Stair Locomotion Method of Quadruped Robot Using Genetic Algorithm (유전 알고리즘을 이용한 4족 로봇의 계단 보행 방법)

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient stair locomotion method for a quadruped robot with mechanism of insectile legs using genetic algorithm(GA). In the proposed method, we first define the factors and the reachable region for the stair locomotion. In addition, we set the gene and the fitness function for GA and generate the gait trajectory by searching the landing position of a quadruped robot, which has the minimun distance of movement and the optimal energy stability margin(ESM). Finally, we verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed stair locomotion method through the computer simulations.

  • In this paper, we propose a gait generation method for a quadruped robot using the waist joints which can minimize the body shake during the locomotion. In this proposed method, we first calculate the hip coordinate of tilted body using the geometrical model of a quadruped robot, and then move the CoG(Center of Gravity) of a quadruped robot using 2-DOF waist joints to minimizes the body shake. In addition, the gait of a quadruped robot is generated based on the wave gait method. Finally, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed method by comparing with that of the previous method through the computer simulations.

  • In this case report we demonstrated the improvemen of gait pattern and the facilitation of postwalk locomotion on the child who has severe mental retardation with Incomplete gait pattern. Treatments included to stimulate vestibular using balance board and vestibular stimulator, to train weight hearing and shifting, to facilitate visual perception motor coordination, and to train walk ann postwalk locomotion in environment similar to actual daily life. It was performed 130 sessions for 10 months. With this treatment, she could accomplished dynamic stability so that she didn't fall at walk after $1\~2$ months of treatment, and could have done climbing up and down without hand support after 10 months. In gross motor function measure(GMFM), total motor function was improved to $89.98\%$ from $73.53\%$.

Design of a Virtual Walking Machine for Virtural Reality Interface (가상현실 대화용 가상걸음 장치의 설계)

  • This paper described a novel locomotion interface that can generate infinite floor for various surface, named as virtual walking machine. This interface allows users to participate in a life-like walking experience in virtual environments, which include various terrains such as plains, slopes and stair ground surfaces. The interface is composed of two three-DOF (X, Y, Yaw) planar devices and two four-DOF (Pitch, Roll, Z, and relative rotation) footpads. The planar devices are driven by AC servomotors for generating fast motions, while the footpad devices are driven by pneumatic actuators for continuous support of human weight. To simulate natural human walking, the locomotion interface design specification are acquired based on gait analysis and each mechanism is optimally designed and manufactured to satisfy the given requirements. The designed locomotion interface allows natural walking(step: 0.8m, height: 20cm, load capability: 100kg, slope:30deg) for various terrains.

A Smoothed Gait Trajectory Planning of a 9-link Biped Robot (9 링크 이족로봇의 부드러운 걸음새 경로 계획)

  • We propose an analytic trajectory planning method using a wavelet neural network (WNN) for a natural and stable locomotion of the 9-link biped robot. We design a appropriate locomotion, which have a kick-action, by means of a ballastic walking model condition. In this paper, a WNN is used to interpolate the trajectory planed by the analytic method. Finally, we show the proposed trajectories through the computer simulation.
