The storage stability of sardine oil and the effect of BHA on the oxidation of fatty acids especially, highly unsatureted fatty acids like EPA and DHA were investigated. The sardine oil was extracted from round sardine, with chloroform-methanol(2:1 v/v) solvent with/without addition of BHA, and then stored at $30^{\circ}C$. The deterioration of oil was examined periodically by measuring acid value(AV), peroxide value(POV), carbonyl value(COV), and oxygen absorption. The changes in fatty acid composition during the storage was determined by GLC analysis to elucidate the oxidative stability of individual fatty acid. Formation of free fatty acid increased rapidly according to the storage time elapsed in the BHA free oil while it was obviously inhibited in the BHA added oil. Peroxides and carbonyl compounds were formed very rapidly at the beginning of storage of BHA free oil. But in the oil extracted with BHA, formation of peroxides was somewhat inhibited and formation of carbonyl compounds was very strongly inhibited. Principal fatty acids of sardine oil were $C_{16:0},\;C_{16:1},\;C_{18:1},\;C_{20:5}\;and\;C_{22:6}$ acids, and $\omega_33$ polyunsaturated fatty acid $(\omega_3\;PUFA)$ content was very high as much as $23\%$ of the total fatty acid content. The oxidative degradation of fatty acids was enhanced at PUFA especially $C_{20:5}$ ana $C_{22:6}$ acid in BHA free oil. However, the oxidation was fairly retarded in the oil extracted with BHA and the both $C_{20:5}$ and $C_{22:6}$ acids remained at the end of a month storage.
Purpose of this study was to compare serum phospholipid fatty acid composition of obese children with that of normal weight children reside in Kangnung area. Subjects were consisted of 56(41 boys and 15 girls) moderately or severely obese elementary school children, and age and sex-matched normal weight children as a control group. Level of serum phospholipid fatty acids was measured by thin layer chromatography(TLC) followed by gas chromatography(GLC). for male subjects, serum triglyceride(121 $\pm$ 4.7mg/dl) and total cholesterol(180 $\pm$ 37.1mg/dl) concentrations were significantly(p < 0.05) higher in obese group than those for control group(81.5 $\pm$ 2.5mg/dl and 161 $\pm$ 32.0mg/dl, respectively). Obese group showed significantly higher percentage of serum phospholipid myristic acid(C14:0) than the value for control group in both male and female subjects. Obese male subjects had significantly higher percentages of palmitoleic acid(16 : 1), oleic acid(18 : 1), dihomo-${\gamma}$-linoleic acid(20 : 3, $\omega$6) and docosatetraenoic acid(22 : 4, $\omega$6), and lower percentages of eicosenoic acid(20 : 1, $\omega$6), docosapentaenoic acid(22 : 5, $\omega$6), EPA(22 : 5, $\omega$3) and DHA (22 : 6, $\omega$3) compared to values for control male subjects. For male subjects, obese group showed significantly higher ratios of 16 : 1($\omega$9)/16 : 0 and 18 : 1($\omega$9)/18 : 0, and significantly lower ratios of 22 : 5($\omega$6)/22 4($\omega$6), and 22 : 6($\omega$3)/22 : 5($\omega$3) compacted to values for the control group. But there was not significant differences in elongation and desaturation indices of serum phospholipids fatty acid metabolism between obese and control group in female subjects. Most of anthropometric measurements related to obesity were negatively correlated with the percentages of PUFA, $\omega$3 fatty acids or DHA(22 : 6, $\omega$3), and positively correlated with the percentage of myristic acid(14 : 0) or $\omega$6/$\omega$3 ratio in serum phospholipids. Serum triglyceride concentration was negatively correlated with the percentage of PUFA or $\omega$3 fatty acids, and positively correlated with $\omega$6/$\omega$3 ratio in serum phospholipids. These results indicate that obesity related changes in blood lipid levels and metabolism are more significant in male subjects than in female subjects. Also changes in serum phospholipid fatty acid composition observed in obese children appear to demonstrate the increased susceptibility of these children to cardiovascular disease and other related chronic diseases.
The purposes of this study were to 1) examine the dietary patterns of fatty acids and the fatty acid composition in serum, 2) determine selenium (Se) concentrations, and 3) investigate how serum fatty acid compositon affects serum levels of Se in Korean elementary school children. The subjects consisted of 168 school children(82 boys & 86 girls) belonging to 1st through 6th grades, and their dietary assessment was evaluated. The serum fatty acid composition was analyzed by GLC, and the ICP/MS method was employed to measure serum Se concentration. Total average intake of PUFA, MUFA and SFA were 10.5g, 12.7g, 11.2g respectively. Total average dietary P/M/S ratio was 1.10/1.18/1.0. The average intake of $\omega$3 fatty acids and $\omega$6 fatty acids were 1.33g, 9.19g, respectively. The $\omega$6/$\omega$3ratio was 14.2 which is higher than the recommended range. In serum fatty acid composition, PUFA, MUFA, SFA were 40.6%, 28.1% and 31.6% respectively. The average $\omega$3 fatty acid composition was 3.80%, and the mean value of $\omega$6 series was 36.8%. The M/S ratio of girls was significantly higher than boy's in fatty acids intake and in serum composition. Mean Se concentration of total subjects was 416.7ug/l and it was significantly higher in the lower grades(1st-3rd)than in the upper grades(4th~6th, p<0.05). Although the mean serum Se concentration was negatively correlated with PUFA composition in total boys and girls, it was not significant. Serum Se concentration was negatively correlated with P/S ratio and C24:1 concentration(p<0.05). In addition, serum composition of $\omega$6 PUFA and C24:1 showed negative correlations with serum Se in only lower grades girl(1st~3rd), and further studies are needed to clarify in these phenomena. In conclusion, the mean serum Se concentration was significantly lower in upper grades (4th~6th)than in lower grades(1st~3rd) of elementary school children and was negatively correlated with P/S ratio of serum fatty acids. More detailed studies on relationship between Se and fatty acids are required.
The chemical and gelling properties of porphyran from Porphra yezoensis collected from Buan and Wido in Korea at different months of the year were studied. Crude porphyran was prepared by hot-water extraction and further purified by cetylpyridinium chloride precipitation, Crude porphyran and porphyran were modified by alkali treatment to eliminate sulfate. The yields of alkali-modified crude porphyran (AMCP) and porphyran(AMP) were between $4.9\~10.9\%$ and $4.0\~6.7\%$ of the dried algae weight and were maximum in February for Buan and January for Wido, respectively. Gel strength of AMCP were highest in February ($790g/cm^2$) for Buan and January ($740 g/cm^2$) for Wido. Alkali modification increased 3,6-anhydro galactose content and the molar ratio of galactose and 3,6-anhydrogalactose of AMCP and AMP showed 1 : 0,8$\~$1.1. GLC and FT-IR measurement of AMP showed that most of sulfate residues were combined to C-6 of galactose, Thus, results of this study suggest that crude porphyran extracted from Porphra yezoensis produces an agar of a reasonably good quality after alkali treatment.
Several samples of tile dried purple laver grown and processed at the major laver producing districts, i. e Mokpo, Wando, Hadong and Jangrim, along the southern coast of Korea were Quantitatively investigated to determine composing patterns of the fatty acids by gas-liquid chromatography. The total lipid contents in dried purple laver of Hadong were $1.8\%$ being the highest value. Upon analyzing fatty acid composition, some differences were observed in their quantitative distribution at different growing places. Dried purple laver of Wando contained mainly $C_{16:0},\;C_{18:1},\;C_{16:1}\;and\;C_{17:0}$ fatty acids, that of Mokpo contained $C_{16:0},\;C_{20:5},\;C_{18:1}\;and\;C_{16:1}$ fatty acids, and that of Hadong $C_{16:0},\;C_{20:5},\;C_{18:0}\;and\;C_{20:1}$ fatty acids, and that of Jangrim $C_{20:5},\;C_{16:0},\;C_{18:1}\;and\;C_{18:0}$ fatty acids, each in order of acid quantity. In regard to the composing pattern of carbon number of fatty acids, the dried purple laver o Mokpo, Hadong, and Jangrim contained $C_{16},\;C_{18}\;and\;C_{20}$ fatty acids with the identical distributional pattern, while that of Jangrim contained $C_{16},\;C_{18}\;and\;C_{17}$ fatty acids as major components. Dried Purple laver of Jangrim contained especially high amount of $C_{20:5}$ fatty acids.
The overseas expansion of global logistics company (GLC) is increasing rapidly under the influence of international specialization of manufacturing, and the necessity of global logistics service is increasing, and then the logistics market is growing year to year. The purposes of this study are to investigate the growing factors and strategies making global logistics company and to suggest the best strategies for overseas expansion of domestic logistics company (DLC) by using imitation strategy. The major results are as follows ; Firstly, DLC has to imitate liner shipping company or terminal operator which has competitiveness rather than other part of logistics. Secondly, DLC has to build up competition through investigation the global logistics companies which have globalization, specialization, monopolization and public elements. Thirdly, DLC has to use 'coming from behind strategy' for the exiting market, the 'pioneer importer strategy' for the new emerging market or niche. Lastly, DLC has to make a road map or process for expanding the logistics service area without collision exiting business models.
In order to analyze the composition of fatty acid in the seed oil. and amino acid in the seed protein of wild thornless chinese pepper tree; Zanthoxylum schinifolum var. inermis Nakai. GLC method and amino acid autoanalyzer were applied. respectively. while the general composition of the seed and physico-chemical properties of the seed oil were also determined by A. O. A. C. method. The results obtained were summarized as follow The content of oil, protein and ashes were 47.05%, 20.14% and 3.1%, respectively. The content of sulfur and cyan compound in the seed were 0.02% and 0.00005%, respectively, which were far below than allowed guantity by food regulation. Therefore, it is considered to be safe for edible purpose. The iodine absorption number obtained was 145.2, which might be belonged to drying oil. The physico-chemical properties of the seed oil such as acid value, saponification number and refractive index showed the characteristics of an unsaturated high molecular fatty acid compound. The seed oil was composed of 34.8% of oleic acid, 25.1% of linoleic acid and 26.1% of linolenic acid, which accounts for more than 80% of essential fatty acid. Therefore, it could be used as an edible oil. Seventeen kinds of amino acids were anayzed from seed protein. Among them comparatively high content of threonine, valine, methionine, isoleucine, leucine and phenylalanine were observed. As a non-essential amino acid, glutamic acid was found as high as 4.985%. From these results the seed of thornless Chinese pepper would be good for oil and protein source.
Monotupenes of the oleoresin of P. densiflora S. et Z., P. densi-thunber gii Uyeki, P. thunbergii Parl., and P. densiflora for. erecta Uyeki of the subgenus Diploxylon of the genus Pinus in Korea were analysed by means of gas liquid chromatography, and following results were obtained. Monoterpene of P. densiflora, P. densi-thunbergii, P. thunbergii, and P. densiflora for. erecta consisted of ${\alpha}$-pinene, camphene, ${\beta}$-pinene, myrcene, limonene, ${\beta}$-phellandrene, terpinolene and two unknown components. Major monoterpene components of P. densiflora and it's for. erecta were ${\alpha}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-phellandrene, myrcene, and terpinolene. Major monoterpene components of P. densi-thunbergii were ${\beta}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-phellandrene, ${\alpha}$-pinene, and terpinolene. Major monoterpene components of P. thunbergii were ${\beta}$-pinene, ${\alpha}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-phellandre, and limonene. Monoterpene components in P. densiflora, P. densi-thunbergii, P. thundergii, and P.densiflora for, erecta showed a range of variation by the individual trees. Monoterpene contents of P. densi-thunbergii were intermediate between those of P. densiflora and P. thunbergii. ${\alpha}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-pinene, and myrcene appeared to be the best taxonomio characteristics for separating P. densiflora from P. thunbergii, and the former had higher content of ${\alpha}$-pinene than ${\beta}$-pinene while those of the latter were vise versa. There was a significant difference of ${\alpha}$-pinene components of P. densiflora between that of Anmyun Island and Mt. Chiak, but it seemed to be caused by the difference of the individual trees rather than provenancial difference.
In order to analyse the composition of fatty acid in the seed oil and amino acid in the seed protein of Pinus Koraiensis seed, GLC method was applied, while the general composition of the seed and physico-chemical properties of the seed oil were also determined by A. O. A. C. method. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. Oil content of the seed was high as 70.25 percent, and comparatively high content of protein (16.4%) and ashes (2.34%) were observed. 2. The seed oil seemed to be belonged semi-drying oil based on the iodine absorbtion. number (108.93). The physical and chemical properties of seed oil such as acid value, saponification number and refractive index showed the composition of unsaturated high molecular fatty acid. 3. The seed oil was composed of high molecular fatty acid, 36.6 percent of oleic acid and 46.7% of linoleic acid, totaling more than 80 percent. Therefor it was good quality as an edible oil. 4. In the amino acid analysis of seed protein 16 Kinds of amino acid were determined, among them essential amino acid like lysine, methionine, threonine, phenylalanine, leucine, isoleucine and valine were abundant. From the results it was considered that the seed is good guality as a protein source.
In the previous paper (Kim et al., Glycoconjugate Journal 16, 247-252, 1999), heteropolysaccharides from Korean medicinal plant, Phellodendri cortex (Hwangbek) showed a poten B-Iymphocyte-stimulating activity in a system using polyclonal antibody forming cells in C57BL/6XC3H mice at dosages of 2-10 mg. In a series of biolgical active polysaccharides from natural medicinal plants, the polysaccharide fractions were isolated and purified from Phellodendron chinese SCHNEID, and antitumor activities were examined at dosages of 2, 5 and 10 mg/100 g. F-7 and F-8 showed the highest tumor inhibitory activities (inhibition ratio 96.4 and 98.2% in 2 mg/100 g), and in dose of 5 mg/100 g, the inhibitory ratios were 95.3 and 97.5%, respectively. Furthermore, 10 mg/100 g of intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection gave 97.3 and 98.7% of inhibition. In oral administration, the inhibitory activities were not markedly observed, indicating that the polysaccharides are directly acting to immune system. When the effects on TS and TK activities were determined, TS activities in the F-2 and F-7-treated mice were markedly suppressed to 73.7% and 79.5% of that in the control (p<0.01), while there was little difference in TK activity with a slight decrease in F-2 only. However, in i.p. injection, TS activities in the F-2, F-5, F-7 and F-8-treated mice were markedly suppressed to 83% to 85% of that in the control (p<0.01). Furthermore, there was also significant differences in TK activities in F-2, F-5, F-7 and F-8-treated mice (p<0.05). Therefore, polysaccharide fraction F-8 was further purified to active fractions of F-9 and F-11 by gel permeation chromatography using TSK Gel HW50S. The purified polysaccharides of F-9 and F-11 were composed of GlcNAc (47.3%), Gal (24.7%) and Man (28.0%). These results clearly indicated that the i.p. injection is much effective to suppress tumor growth than oral administration.
