The purpose of this study is to estimate temporal soil loss change according to long-term land cover changes using G1S and RS. Revised USLE(Universal Soil Loss Equation) factors were prepared by using point rainfall data, DEM(Digital Elevation Model), soil map and land cover map. During the past two decades, land cover changes were traced by using Landsat MSS and TM data. As a result, forest area in 2000 has decreased 25.3 $km^2$ compared with that in 1990. Soil loss has decreased 3751.2 tou/yr. On the other hand, upland area has increased 22.5 $km^2$. Soil loss of upland has increased 5395.4 to/yr. Therefore, soil loss in 2000 increased 6.3 kg/$m^2$/yr compared with that in 1990. This was mainly caused by the increased upland area.

It was investigated to develop the contents for the local government for the purpose of providing various and correct information. Especially it was focused to take advantage of spatial information techniques, GIS(Geographic Information Systems) and RS(Remote Sensing). The research site for this study was Muan-gun located at the south-western part of Korea, and this site has very high opportunities to became the central point for the economical and tourist industry. The regional information contents for Muan-gun was developed and composed of three elements, internet related, geographic information related and satellite imagery related elements These contents will make a contribution for the local government to present the regional information effectively and efficiently.

This study was conducted to estimate carbon dioxide $(CO_{2})$ absorption and bioenergy supply potential of forests in Muju county based on GIS RS In results, it was estimated that 7,800,130 $tCO_{2}$ was absorbed and all bioenergy supply potential of 11,868,202,837 Mcal was available. Futhermore, bioenergy supply potential of 314,876,637 Mcal was available each year that was able to be supplied for the hitting during winter period to 11,241 households. This was more than all households of 10,902 in Muju county. This study suggested the methodology for estimating $CO_{2}$ absorption and bioenergy supply potential of forests on the national scale, and it was believed that reliability would be increased by estimation on the national scale using detailed forest information based on the latest techniques such as GIS RS techniques.

This study reviews the research trends of landscape ecology, geographical information system(GIS) and remote sensing(RS) that have appeared in articles published in the Journal of the Korean Institute of Landscape Architecture over the last 30 years. The aim is to identify the research characteristics in Korea. There were 905 papers published in the journal during this period. There were 35 papers concerning landscape ecology, and 26 papers concerning GIS/RS, which are few compared to other research fields. The papers were classified chronologically, and reviewed in terms of their contents. In the seventies and eighties, papers were contributed from other disciplines, e. g., forestry, and also included translated papers from foreign sources. However, in the nineties, the number of papers grew continuously. During the fist half of nineties, six papers were published. However, 30 papers were published during the last half of nineties, which shows a rapid increase in the number of papers contributed. From 2001 to 2003, there were 17 papers published. Overall, there tends to be an increase in the number of papers contributed and published.
By use of RS and GIS, the QuickBird image and geographic map were used for the survey of the foreshore resources of Shanghai. The image was processed and interpreted. The distribution maps of sea dike, foreshore, vegetation, soil, hydraulic structures, landscape, topography, and so on were extracted in manual classification. These data have been integrated into the information management system for the shoreline and foreshore. It plays an important role in the evolvement analysis of the shoreline and foreshore.
In order to evaluate landslide susceptibility in Yanbian region, this study analyzed 7 factors related to landslide occurrence, such as soil, geology, land use, slope, slope aspect, fault and river by Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), and calculated the weights of these 7 hazard-induced factors, determined the internal weights and the relative weights between various factors. According to these weights, combining the Remote Sensing technology (RS) with Geographic Information System technology (GIS), the selected area was evaluated by using GIS raster data analysis function, then landslide susceptibility chart was mapped out. The comprehensive analysis of AHP and GIS showed that there has unstable area with the potential risk of sliding in the research area. The result of landslide susceptibility agrees well with the historical landslides, which proves the accuracy of adopted methods and hazard-induced factors.
Potential and capabilities of GIS in planning and decision-making is widely known as an experimental tool, but its existence in real-world application is yet to realize. GIS originated in the field of cartography and even at today it is mainly used as a tool for map production. Number of reasons could bring forward for this shortcoming. Limited real-world applications could be a significant one among them. This paper describe an attempt to use GIS technology in Lao PDR where a study team was involved in formulating a Master Plan for national healthcare system. A database was created for the whole country with spatial and descriptive data gathered from various sources. Attempt was made to demonstrate the potential of GIS by using the database for identifying healthcare status, distribution of resources, recognizing deprived areas and locating areas for future investments based on accessibility and social status. The approach justified the investment on a GIS system and introducing the system in the planning sector from grass-root level to central level.

Although the importance of developing reliable and systematic GHG inventory has increased, the GIS/RS-based national scale LULUCF (Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry) sector analysis is insufficient in the context of the Paris Agreement. In this study, the change in $CO_2$ storage of forest land due to land use change is estimated using two GIS/RS methodologies, Sampling and Wall-to-Wall methods, from 2000 to 2010. Particularly, various imagery with sampling data and land cover maps are used for Sampling and Wall-to-Wall methods, respectively. This land use matrix of these methodologies and the national cadastral statistics are classified by six land-use categories (Forest land, Cropland, Grassland, Wetlands, Settlements, and Other land). The difference of area between the result of Sampling methods and the cadastral statistics decreases as the sample plot distance decreases. However, the difference is not significant under a 2 km sample plot. In the 2000s, the Wall-to-Wall method showed similar results to sampling under a 2 km distance except for the Settlement category. With the Wall-to-Wall method, $CO_2$ storage is higher than that of the Sampling method. Accordingly, the Wall-to-Wall method would be more advantageous than the Sampling method in the presence of sufficient spatial data for GHG inventory assessment. These results can contribute to establish an annual report system of national greenhouse gas inventory in the LULUCF sector.
