Characteristics and roles of protease released during the germination of Dictyostelium discoideum spores were investigated. When geat activated, the spores germinated, progressively releasing the protease into the extracellular medium. The protease activity exhibited high at pH 2.5. When cyclogeximide was added to culture, complete germination (emergence) and protease release were stopped. Addition of purified nonspecific protease to culture speeded up germination. These results suggest that excreted protease may play a role in removal of the spore wall.
This study was carried out to investigate the chemical change of rutin and fatty acids of buckwheat during germination. The content of rutin in buckwheat before germination was 31.5mg% and that after 7 days was increased to 1, 660.3mg%. The content of stearic acid was increased slightly after 3 day during germination but those of other fatty acids were decreased gradually.

This study was conducted to investigate early germination characteristics and germination pattern of new cultivars of creeping bentgrass (CB, Agrostis pall/stris Huds.) under natural room temperature conditions and to analyze differences between alternative and natural conditions. Seven cultivars of CB were tested in the study. Daily and cumulative germination patterns were measured and analyzed on a daily basis. Significant differences were observed in germination pattern, days to the first germination, days to 50% germination, days to 85% germination, and germination rate among cultivars under different environments. The first germination in all entries was initiated between 4 and 5 days after seeding (DAS) under alternative conditions, while between 6 and 8 DAS under natural conditions, being 2 to 3 days later as compared with that of alternative conditions. As for the first germination percentage, it was generally 5 to 25% under alternative conditions. However, 'Penn A-1', 'Penncross', and 'Penn A-4' cultivars showed a vigorous germination, producing 50 to 70%. Under natural room temperature conditions, it was 5 to 10% for the most entries, except 'Penncross', 'L-93', and 'Penn A-4' cultivars which vigorously produced 20 to 50%. Days to the 50% germination in CB resulted in 4 to 10 DAS under alternative conditions, while 6 to 15 DAS under natural conditions, being 2 to 5 days later than under alternative conditions. Days to the 85% germination were 5.90 to 11.75 DAS under alternative conditions and 7.95 to 12.50 DAS under natural conditions. 'Penn A-1' and 'L-93' were the fastest cultivars under alternative and natural conditions, respectively. Regardless of the temperature conditions, the longest cultivar in germination was 'T-1', being over 11 DAS. In-depth comparative data on germination characteristics and germination patterns among CB cultivars would be usefully applied for a practical CB turf establishment in golf course construction etc.
The study was conducted to investigate early establishment characteristics and germination pattern of fine-textured fescues (FF) under natural room temperature and to analyze differences between alternative and natural conditions for a practical application. Six cultivars from Chewings fescue (CF), creeping red fescue (CRF), hard fescue (HF) and sheep fescue (SF) were evaluated in the study. Daily and cumulative germination pattern were measured and analyzed. Significant differences were greatly observed in germination pattern, days to the first germination, days to 60% germination, and germination percentage with environments, species and cultivars. Final germination rate was 29.7 to 80.0% under natural conditions. The first germination was initiated between 8 and 10 DAS (days after seeding) under natural conditions, being 3 to 4 days later as compared with ISTA conditions. Days to the 60% germination were 12.1 to 19.0 DAS, being 3.0 to 4.2 days slower than that under ISTA conditions. CF 'Jamestown II' was the fastest cultivar, while the slowest CRF 'Audubon'. Turf establishment speed was faster with CRF < SF < HF and < CF in order. Information on differences in germination characteristics and pattern between alternative and natural conditions would be practically useful for a golf course construction etc., when established with FF.
Seeds treated before sowing should be dried for their quality control on their sale or storage. The experiments were done to clarify the effect of drying, temperature and light quality treated during drying and germination on germination of gourd (Lagenaria siceraria Standl.) seeds. Drying of treated seeds was done at $35^{\circ}C$. After treated seeds were dried. their germination test was done at 10, 20 and $30^{\circ}C$ on the condition of darkness, but with blue, red, far-red light and darkness as light quality treatments. FR-yongjadaemok and FR-kunghap were used as test cultivars and their daily germination rates were measured at treatment levels. Its presowing hydrated seeds were dried 10 hours at $35^{\circ}C$ until reached below their original moisture content, and germination rate between the above dried seeds and the conventional dry-heated ones was not significantly different. At $30^{\circ}C$ germination temperature, the treated seeds showed higher initial germination rate when dried under red light illumination than under darkness although their germination rates were nearly same at each temperature of 10 and $20^{\circ}C$ being relatively low. Effect of the red light treatment during their drying continued to more than 3 months. Germination rate of the red light treated seeds during drying was reduced by far-red light treated during their germination. The initial rate to the second day after sowing were higher under red light and darkness treated during germination than under the two other lights.
Pepper (Capsicum annum L.) used as a spice or fruit vegetable has been transplanted for cultivation to accompany the production of its seedlings in general. The experiment was done to measure the effect of its cultivars (Daemyng; Wanggochu), priming (chemicals; concentration; period), light quality (red; far-red; blue; dark) during priming, and germination temperature (25 or 15$^{\circ}C$ constant; 25/15$^{\circ}C$ alternating) on the rate of germination done under incandescent lamps until 9 days after sowing. Seed germination was better when primed with Ca(NO$_3$)$_2$ than with KNO$_3$. Priming for 6 to 12 days using the former chemical enhanced the final germination rate and shortened the elapsed days to 50% germination, $T_{50}$, compared to no-priming. Under $25^{\circ}C$ constant germination temperature, primed seeds at darkness or far-red light showed the highest rate until 5 days after sowing or the lowest one since 7 days after sowing, respectively. The germination response at 25/15$^{\circ}C$ alternating temperature did not followed the lowest rate of 15$^{\circ}C$ constant germination temperature but inclined to that of $25^{\circ}C$ constant recorded the greatest one. Under 3 germination temperature red light treated during priming elevated the rate since 7 days after sowing compared to the other light treatments, and the germination rate of each cultivar was affected by no-priming or priming, light quality during priming. which imply their interaction to the seed germination.
This study was conducted to investigate the variation of seed and germination characteristics among populations and among individuals within populations of Abies koreana Wilson distributed in Korea. Cones was collected from 4 natural populations and their seven seed qualities as well as three germination behaviors was measured and tested. Statistical analysis showed that there were significant differences among populations as well as among individuals within populations in 8 traits except for percentage of sound seeds and seed vigor. Coefficients of variation in percentage of sound seeds, germination percentage and germination rate is relatively high (43.8~57.2%) compared to other traits (11.0~28.3%). The germination of seed started on the seventeen day after sowing and it was completed within seventy-nine days. The final seed germination capacity was found high except for Mt. Duckyu (8.5%) and varied from 39.7% to 47.7%. Mean germination time ranged between 38.1 and 43.6 days and germination rate varied from 1.98 to 1.39 ea./days. As a result of simple correlation analysis between seed characteristics and germination characteristics, the percentage of sound seeds showed a significant positive correlation with the germination percentage and the germination rate but showed a negative correlation with the mean germination time.

To investigate the attributes of seed germination of the plants for greening of river bank slope, low-temperature treatment, chemical treatment, plant hormones treatment, and stratification were conducted using the seeds of 6 herbs growing naturally around river banks, such as Setaria glauca and faberii, Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii, Miscanthus sinensis, Pennisetum alopecuroides, Lespedeza cuneata and the seeds of 3 shrubs, such as Lespedeza bicolor., Rosa multiflora, Spiraea prunifolia for. simpliciflora. The findings are as follows. In case of herbs, Setaria glauca and faberii. have stone seeds. In the treatment with $H_2SO_4$, they were germinated through dormancy breaking, even though there were some differences depending on immersion time, and the germination rate of Setaria faberii was a bit higher than that of Setaria glauca. The germination rate of Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii was low in the treatment with $GA_3$, NAA, and the plant hormone, but the seed germination rate has improved and the germination rate of Miscanthus sinensis and Pennisetum alopecuroides showed the improved seed germination rate in low temperature treatment. In case of Lespedeza cuneata and bicolor, the leguminous plants, the treatment with $H_2SO_4$ was most effective for the improvement of seed germination and the decrease in germination time. Only Spiraea prunifolia for. simpliciflora, the rose among 3 woody plants showed the seed germination rate above 50% without any additional treatment. Thus, it was thought to be appropriate for greening. Rosa multiflora showed the attribute of germination in a dark condition at low temperature through stratification, despite its low germination rate. Based on the results as above, with respect to the greening using directly collected seeds, Miscanthus sinensis, Pennisetum alopecuroides, and Spiraea prunifolia for. simpliciflora are suitable for greening, because they do not need any additional treatment, and Lespedeza cuneata and bicolor are also suitable for greening because it is possible to improve the germination rate and reduce the germination time through the treatment on the seeds before sowing.

Castanopsis indica (Sil Batna) is an ecologically valuable multipurpose indigenous tree species of Bangladesh. Considering its high value but poor natural regeneration due to seed dormancy, the authors conducted an experiment at the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences Chittagong University (IFESCU) during 2012-2013 to find out effective pre-sowing treatments. Ten pre-sowing seed treatments were applied on mature, even-sized seeds namely-control; sandpaper rubbing; nail clipping; immersion in normal water (at room temperature: 24℃) for 24 hrs., 48 hrs. and 72 hrs.; immersion in hot water (80℃) for 1 minute; soaking in 10% dilute H2SO4; soaking in 10% HCl for 5 minutes; and sowing in propagator house. Seeds sown after sandpaper rubbing at the distal end revealed best performances by providing highest germination percent (66.7%), germination energy (30%), germination index (0.17), germination rate (0.0145), germination value (30%) and plant percent (66.7%) within shortest period (38 days). The treatment also produced most vigor seedlings with 20.9 cm shoot height, 15 node number, and largest leaves (11.1 cm×2.9 cm). Hence, it is recommended to adopt sandpaper rubbing method for maximum germination and quality seedlings.
Three malting barley cultivars, Sacheon #6, Doosan #12, and Doosan #22 were collected from Gwangsan, Chinju and Milyang which were artificially aged to provide varying levels of seed quality. Samples were evaluated by the standard germination test (SGT), cold germination test (CT), electroconductivity test and tetrazolium vigor test (TZ). In a multiple regression analysis, percent germination in the SGT accounted for 65% of the variation in field emergence of malting barley. Vigor index of the standard germination and cold germination tests also contributed significantly to the regression equation. Grain yield was predicted by the vigor index of TZ test. Percent standard germination and percent TZ germination prediction were useful for predicting grain yield in nine lots of malting barley.
