  • This study was undertaken to examine the quality characteristics of glutinous barley flour (GBF) Yakgwa produced by air frying. To achieve this, the pH of the dough as well as expansion ratio, color, texture, and sensory evaluation of Yakgwa were measured. The pH of the Yakgwa dough significantly decreases with increasing amount of GBF, over the range 5.35-5.45. Lightness (L), redness (a), and yellowness (b) also decrease with increasing amount of GBF. Furthermore, significant decrease was observed in the hardness, proportionate to the ratio of GBF added (p<0.001). Generic descriptive sensory evaluation results reveal that samples with high ratio of GBF show increased grain aroma, burnt aroma, grain flavor, nutty flavor, astringency, chalky taste, and hardness. The acceptance test determined the GBF-20 sample group to be high in flavor and texture (p<0.05). Therefore, it would be appropriate to apply to 20% GBF for alternative and the addition of GBF would be considered to have positive effects on the quality characteristics of Yakgwa using air fryer.

  • The administraction of ginseng butanol fraction(GBF) inhibited the development of tolerance to and physical dependence on morphine induced by morphine multiple injections in mice. Each group of mice was injected with morphine hydrochloride (40mg/kg s.c.) three times at 8 hr intervals for a period of 6 days. GBF (25, 50, 100, 200mg/kg) was injected (i.p.) to mice 1hr prior to the third morphine injection daily. Inhibition of morphine tolerance by GBF was evidenced by the increase in analgesic response to morphine hydrochloride (10mg/kg) as estimated by the tail flick method and the reduction in morphine dependence was estimated by the decreased number of the naloxone induced withdrawal jumping mice. Further evidenced that GBF reduced the development of morphine dependence was indicated by the fact that GBF decreased the loss in body weight.

  • This study aimed to determine factors that influence blood flow through coronary bypass grafts and to analyze relationship between the graft flow and postoperative outcome. Blood flow through 146 bypass grafts(GBF) was measured with transit-time ultrasound flowmeter during coronary artery bypass grafting operations in 50 patients. Single and multiple regression analyses were done for relationships between the GBF and four variables: internal diameter of recipient coronary artery, myocardial value of bypassed branch(es), type of graft, and finding of preoperative myocardial perfusion scan. The relationship between GBF and postoperative scan finding was also analyzed. 1. The mean GBF was significantly higher in sequential grafts than in single vein grafts or in internal thoracic artery grafts(61.5 vs. 46.9 and 42.5 ml/min). 2. Myocardial value and recipient artery diameter were found to be the factors determining GBF. There was no correlation between GHF and presence of perfusion defect in the preoperative scan. 3. Myocardial value was found to be more important than recipient artery diameter in determinintg GBF. 4. Reversible perfusion defects were more frequently found in the areas upplied by grafts with low GBP. But this fact had only mild statistical significance. These results suggest that blood flow through a bypass graft is more determined by the size of its supplyinf: myocardium than by the size of recipient artery. So, we can expect effective improvement in myocardial flow reserve after grafting of small(1~1.5mm) coronary arteries, if they supply substantial area of myocardium.

  • Effects of GBF (gas bubbling filtration) treatment conditions and scrap ratio on the electric conductivity of a commercial pure aluminum for diecasting were investigated using by specific gravity and electrical conductivity measurement system, hydrogen gas analyzer, XRD, and EDS. Electrical conductivities of specimen mixed Al scrap ratio until 60% from 0% were decreased with increasing the precipitates amount and size of AlFeSi ternary intermetallic compound on the grain boundary as well as amount of porosity in the grain. On the other hand, electrical conductivities was reincreased gradually in spite of scrap ratio increase from 80% to 100%. Size of AlFeSi compound formed on the grain boundary were coarsened with the increament of scrap ratios untill 80% and GBF treatment time simultaneously.

  • Dollar spot caused by Sclerotinia homeocarpa is one of major diseases in putting greens. Microorganisms antagonistic to S. homeocarpa, a pathogen of dollar spot, were primarily screened through in vitro tests, including dual culture method and triple layer agar diffusion method. In vivo tests were also conducted to select the best candidate for a biocontrol microorganism, using pot experiment. Bacillus subtilis EW42-1 and Trichoderma harziaum GBF-0208 were finally selected as biocontrol agents against dollar spot. Relative Performance Index(RPI) was used as a criterion of selecting potential biocontrol agents. B. subtilis EW42-1 and T. harzianum GBF-0208 showed resistance to several agrochemicals mainly used in a golf course. B. subtilis EW42-1 and T. harzianum GBF-0208 suppressed effectively the disease progress of dollar spot like synthetic fungicide tebuconazole in the nursery where dollar spot had seriously occurred. B. subtilis EW42-1 and T. harzianum GBF-0208 have a potential to be biocontrol agents for the control of dollar spot.

  • This paper presents the results from three-dimensional finite element (FE) analysis undertaken to provide insight into the lateral behaviors of piled gravity base foundation (GBF) for offshore wind turbine. The piled GBF was originally developed to support the gravity based foundation in very soft clay soil. A GBF is supported by five piles in a cross arrangement to achieve additional vertical bearing capacity. This study considered four different cases including a) single pile, b) three-by-three group pile (with nine piles), c) cross-arrangement group pile (with five piles), and d) piled GBF. All the cases were installed in homogenous soft clay soil with undrained shear strength of 20 kPa. From the numerical results, p-y curves and thus P-multiplier was back-calculated. For the group pile cases, the group effect decreased with increasing the number of piles. Interestingly, for the piled GBF, the P-multipliers showed a unique trend, compared to the group pile cases. This study concluded that the global lateral behaviour of the piled GBF was influenced strongly by the interaction between GBF and contacted soil surface.

  • In this study, vibration characteristics of offshore wind turbine tower (WTT) with gravity-based foundation (GBF) are identified from dynamic responses under wave-induced excitations. The following approaches are implemented to achieve the objective. Firstly, the operational modal analysis methods such as frequency domain decomposition (FDD) and stochastic subspace identification (SSI) are selected to estimate modal parameters from output-only dynamic responses. Secondly, a GBF WTT model composed of superstructure, substructure and foundation is simulated as a case study by using a structural analysis program, MIDAS FEA. Thirdly, wave pressures acting on the WTT structure are established by nonlinear regular waves which are simulated from a computational fluid software, Flow 3D. Wave-induced acceleration responses of the target structure are analyzed by applying the simulated wave pressures to the GBF WTT model. Finally, modal parameters such as natural frequencies and mode shapes are estimated from the output-only acceleration responses and compared with the results from free vibration analysis. The effect of wave height and period on modal parameter extraction is also investigated for the mode identification of the GBF WTT.

  • Benign gastrobronchial fistula (GBF) after Ivor Lewis operation is a very rare and serious complication. We describe a patient with GBF who was successfully managed on the single-stage repair, 15 months after the Ivor Lewis operation. After the division of the GBF, the bronchial and gastric defects were closed directly. The omental flap and the pedicled 5th. intercostal muscle flap were interposed between the closed defects. The literature of this subject is reviewed and discussed.

  • Background: Goslings in several Taiwanese farms experienced gosling feather loss disease (GFL) at 21-35 days and goose broke feather disease (GBF) at 42-60 days. The prevalence ranges from a few birds to 500 cases per field. It is estimated that about 12,000 geese have been infected, the morbidity is 70-80% and the mortality is 20-30%. Objectives: This study aims to investigate the pathogens that cause GFL and GBF. Focus on the study of the correlation between goose circovirus (GoCV) and goose parvovirus (GPV) with the goose feather loss in southern Taiwan. Furthermore, a phylogenetic tree was established to align the differences between southern and northern Taiwan and compare with virus strains from China and Europe. Methods: Samples were collected from animal hospitals. Molecular and microscopy diagnostics were used to examine 92 geese. Specific quantitative polymerase chain reaction (Q-PCR) assays are performed to evaluate GPV and GoCV viral loads and simultaneously evaluated the feather loss conditions in geese with the scoring method. Results: High prevalence of GoCV and GPV infection in geese showing signs of GFL and GBF. Inclusion body was detected in the feather follicles and Lieberkuhn crypt epithelial cells. The Q-PCR showed the high correlation between feather loss and viruses during 3rd-5th week. However, the infection was not detected using the same test in 60 healthy geese. Conclusions: Thus, GFL and GBF appear to be significantly closely related to GoCV and GPV. The geese feathers showed increasing recovery after being quarantined and disinfected.

  • Intraperitoneal administration of ginseng butanol fraction(GBF) to chronic morphinization in male Sprague-Dawley rats inhibited the development of tolerance to the analgesic effect and hyperthermic action of morphine. Rats were rendered tolerant to morphine by subcutaneous multiple morphine injections for a period of 8 days. The development of tolerance was evidenced by the decreased analgesic response to morphine and inhibition of tolerance by the greater analgesic response. Concomitant administration of morphine with GBF blocked the tolerance to the hyperthermic effect of morphine as evidenced by elevation of body temperature by morphine. Dopamine receptor sensitivity was enhanced in morphine tolerant rats as measured by apomorphine induced in spontaneous motor activity. GBF administration also blocked dopamine receptor supersensitivity induced by chronic morphinization.
