Cloud computing system consists of distributed resources in a dynamic and decentralized environment. Therefore, using cloud computing resources efficiently and getting the maximum profits are still challenging problems to the cloud service providers and cloud service users. It is important to provide the efficient scheduling. To schedule cloud resources, numerous heuristic algorithms such as Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), Cuckoo Search (CS) algorithms have been adopted. The paper proposes a Modified Particle Swarm Optimization (MPSO) algorithm to solve the above mentioned issues. We first formulate an optimization problem and propose a Modified PSO optimization technique. The performance of MPSO was evaluated against PSO, and GA. Our experimental results show that the proposed MPSO minimizes the task execution time, and maximizes the resource utilization rate.
The effect of rebirthing technique on the genetic algorithm (GA)-based size optimization is investigated. The GA mimics the principles of nature and it can gradually improve structural design through biological operations such as fitness, selection, crossover and mutation. However, premature optimum has been often detected in the generic GA with continuous design variable. Since then, the so-called rebirthing technique has been proposed to avoid this problem. However, the performance of the rebirthing technique has not been reported. Therefore, the size optimizations of spatial structures are tackled to investigate the performance of the rebirthing technique on the generic GA. From numerical results, it is well proved that the rebirthing technique is very effective to produce the optimum values regardless of the values of parameters used in the GA operations.

The paper presents a multi-objective optimization strategy for a multi-type sensor placement for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of long span bridges. The problem is formulated for simultaneous placement of strain sensors and accelerometers (heterogeneous network) based on application demands for SHM system. Modal Identification (MI) and Accurate Mode Shape Expansion (AMSE) were chosen as the application demands for SHM. The optimization problem is solved through the use of integer Genetic Algorithm (GA) to maximize a common metric to ensure adequate MI and AMSE. The performance of the joint optimization problem solved by GA is compared with other established methods for homogenous sensor placement. The results indicate that the use of a multi-type sensor system can improve the quality of SHM. It has also been demonstrated that use of GA improves the overall quality of the sensor placement compared to other methods for optimization of sensor placement.

This study investigates the multi-objective fuzzy optimization of crowbar resistance for the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) low-voltage ride-through (LVRT). By integrating the crowbar resistance of the crowbar circuit as a decision variable, a multi-objective model for crowbar resistance value optimization has been established to minimize rotor overcurrent and to simultaneously reduce the DFIG reactive power absorbed from the grid during the process of LVRT. A multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) is applied to solve this optimization problem. In the proposed GA, the value of the crowbar resistance is represented by floating-point numbers in the GA population. The MOGA emphasizes the non-dominated solutions and simultaneously maintains diversity in the non-dominated solutions. A fuzzy-set-theory-based is employed to obtain the best solution. The proposed approach has been evaluated on a 3 MW DFIG LVRT. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach for solving the crowbar resistance multi-objective optimization problem in the DFIG LVRT.
Genetic Algorithm (GA) consists of selection, reproduction, crossover and mutation processes and many parameters including population size, generation number, the probability of crossover (Pc) and the probability of mutation (Pm). Determining values of the parameters is found critical in the whole optimization process and a sensitivity analysis with them seems mandatory. This paper tries to demonstrate such importance of sensitivity analysis of GA using an example water supply tunnel network of the New York City. For optimization of the network with GA, Pc and Pm vary from 0.5 to 0.9 by an increment of 0.1 and from 0.01 to 0.05 by an increment of 0.01, respectively, while fixing both the population size and the generation number to 100. This sensitivity analysis results in an optimum design of 22.3879 million dollars at the values of 0.8 and 0.01 for Pc and Pm, respectively. In addition, the probability of recombination (Pr) is introduced to check its applicability in the GA optimization of water distribution network. When Pr is 0.05 with the same values of Pc and Pm as above, the optimum design costs 20.9077 million dollars. This is lower than the cost of 22.3879 million dollars for the case of not using Pr by 6.6%. These results indicate that conducting a sensitivity analysis with parameter values and using Pr are useful in the optimization of WDN.

Genetic algorithms(GA) are well known and very popular stochastic optimization algorithm. Although, GA is very powerful method to find the global optimum, it has some drawbacks, for example, premature convergence to local optima, slow convergence speed to global optimum. To enhance the performance of GA, this paper proposes an adaptive partitioning-based genetic algorithm. The partitioning method, which enables GA to find a solution very effectively, adaptively divides the search space into promising sub-spaces to reduce the complexity of optimization. This partitioning method is more effective as the complexity of the search space is increasing. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed by applying it to several bench mark test function examples and the optimization of fuzzy controller for the control of an inverted pendulum.

In this paper, we present a non-linear integer programming by genetic algorithm (GA) for available sizes of stiffener or thickness of plate in a job site. GA can rapidly search for the approximate global optimum under complicated design environment such as ship. Meanwhile it can handle the optimization problem involving discrete design variable. However, there are many parameters have to be set for GA, which greatly affect the accuracy and calculation time of optimum solution. The setting process is hard for users, and there are no rules to decide these parameters. In order to overcome these demerits, the optimization for these parameters has been also conducted using GA itself. Also it is proved that the parameters are optimal values by the trial function. Finally, we applied this method to compass deck of ship where the vibration problem is frequently occurred to verify the validity and usefulness of nonlinear integer programming.

The main two applications of the Genetic Algorithms(GA) are the optimization and the machine learning. Machine Learning has two objectives that make the complex system learn its environment and produce the proper output of a system. The machine learning using the Genetic Algorithms is called GA machine learning or genetic-based machine learning (GBML). The machine learning is different from the optimization problems in finding the rule set. In optimization problems, the population of GA should converge into the best individual because optimization problems, the population of GA should converge into the best individual because their objective is the production of the individual near the optimal solution. On the contrary, the machine learning systems need to find the set of cooperative rules. There are two methods in GBML, Michigan method and Pittsburgh method. The former is that each rule is expressed with a string, the latter is that the set of rules is coded into a string. Th classifier system of Holland is the representative model of the Michigan method. The classifier systems arrange the strength of classifiers of classifier list using the message list. In this method, the real time process and on-line learning is possible because a set of rule is adjusted on-line. A classifier system has three major components: Performance system, apportionment of credit system, rule discovery system. In this paper, we solve the food search problem with the learning and evolution of an artificial ant using the learning classifier system.

In order to improve the utilization of irrigation water resources of greenhouse tomatoes, a water-saving irrigation decision-making model based on genetic optimization T-S fuzzy neural network is proposed in this paper. The main work are as follows: Firstly, the traditional genetic algorithm is optimized by introducing the constraint operator and update operator of the Krill herd (KH) algorithm. Secondly, the weights and thresholds of T-S fuzzy neural network are optimized by using the improved genetic algorithm. Finally, on the basis of the real data set, the genetic optimization T-S fuzzy neural network is used to simulate and predict the irrigation volume for greenhouse tomatoes. The performance of the genetic algorithm improved T-S fuzzy neural network (GA-TSFNN), the traditional T-S fuzzy neural network algorithm (TSFNN), BP neural network algorithm(BPNN) and the genetic algorithm improved BP neural network algorithm (GA-BPNN) is compared by simulation. The simulation experiment results show that compared with the TSFNN, BPNN and the GA-BPNN, the error of the GA-TSFNN between the predicted value and the actual value of the irrigation volume is smaller, and the proposed method has a better prediction effect. This paper provides new ideas for the water-saving irrigation decision in greenhouse tomatoes.
Genetic alogorithm(GA) is a well-known global optimization algorithm. However, as the searching bounds grow wider., performance of local optimization deteriorates. In this paper, we propose a hybrid algorithm which integrates the gradient algorithm and GA so as to reinforce the performance of local optimization. We apply this algorithm to the system identification of second order RLC circuit. Identification results show that the proposed algorithm gets the better and robust performance to find the exact values of RLC elements.
