  • Fabrications of barrier layer on a polyethersulfon (PES) film and OLED based on a plastic substrate by atomic layer deposition (ALD) have been carried out. Simultaneous deposition of 30 nm of $AlO_x$ film on both sides of PES film gave film MOCON value of 0.0615 g/$m^2$/day (@38$^{\circ}C$, 100 % R.H.). Moreover, the double layer of 200 urn $SiN_x$ film deposited by PECVD and 20 nm of $AlO_x$ film by ALD resulted in the MOCON value lower than the detection limit of MOCON. The OLED encapsulation performance of the double layer have been investigated using the OLED structure of ITO/MTDATA(20 nm)/NPD(40 nm)/AlQ(60 nm)/LiF(1 nm)/Al(75 nm) based on the plastic substrate. Preliminary life time to 91 % of initial luminance (1300 cd/$m^2$) was 260 hours for the OLED encapsulated with 100 nm of PECVD deposited $SiN_x$/30 nm of ALD deposited $AlO_x$.

  • A new plastic-damage constitutive model applicable to lightweight concrete (LWC) and normal weight concrete (NWC) is proposed in this paper based on both continuum damage mechanics and plasticity theories. Two damage variables are used to represent tensile and compressive damage independently. The effective stress is computed in the Drucker-Prager multi-surface plasticity framework. The stress is then computed by multiplication of the damaged part and the effective part. The proposed model is coded as a user material subroutine and incorporated in a finite element analysis software. The constitutive integration algorithm is implemented by adopting the operator split involving elastic predictor, plastic corrector and damage corrector. The numerical study shows that the algorithm is efficient and robust in the finite element analysis. Experimental investigation is conducted to verify the proposed model involving both static and dynamic tests. The very good agreement between the numerical results and experimental results demonstrates the capability of the proposed model to capture the behaviors of LWC and NWC structures for static and impact loading.

  • A critical heat flux (CHF) prediction method using an artificial neural network (ANN) was evaluated for application to the high-heat-flux (HHF) subcooled flow boiling. The developed ANN predictions were compared with the experimental database consisting of a total of 3069 CHF data points. Also, the prediction performance by the ANN was compared with those by mechanistic models and a look up table technique. The parameter ranges of the experimental data are: $0.33{\leq}D{\leq}37.5mm$, $0.002{\leq}L{\leq}4m$, $0.37{\leq}G{\leq}134Mg/m^2s$, $0.1{\leq}P{\leq}20MPa$, $50\leq{\Delta}h_{sub,in}\leq1660kJ/kg$, and $1.1{\leq}q_{CHF}\leq276MW/m^2$. $276MW/m^2$. It was found that 91.5% of the total data points were predicted within $a{\pm}20%$ error band, which showed the best prediction performance among the existing CHF prediction methods considered.

  • Chemoattractant receptor homologous molecule expressed on Th2 cells (CRTh2) is a G-protein coupled receptor targeted for inflammatory diseases such as asthma, allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis. In this study, pharmacophore modeling and comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) were performed on the series of 2-(2-(benzylthio)-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl) acetic acids derivatives. Five highly active compounds were used for generation of pharmacophore models using GASP module. The best pharmacophore model was selected and used as template for the alignment of compounds which was used for CoMFA analysis. The best predictions obtained for CoMFA was $q^2=0.545$, $r^2=0.756$. The predictive ability of the model was investigated using 15 test set compounds. Contour maps suggested that presence of bulky substituents at $5^{th}$ position of benzene ring connected to suphur atoms attached to imidazol ring will increase the activity of the compounds. The results obtained from this study will be useful to design more potent CRTh2 antagonists.

  • Thioltransferase, also known as glutaredoxin, is an enzyme that catalyzes the reduction of a variety of disulfides, including protein disulfides, in the presence of reduced glutathione. Thioltransferase was purified from kale through ammonium sulfate fractionation, DE-52 ion-exchange chromatography, Sephadex G-75 gel filtration, and Q-Sepharose ion-exchange chromatography. Its molecular size was estimated to be about 31,000 daltons on SDS-PAGE. The purified enzyme has an optimum pH of about 8.0 with 2-hydroxyethyl disulfide as a substrate. The enzyme also utilizes L-sulfocysteine, L-cystine, bovine serum albumin, and insulin as substrates in the presence of GSH. The enzyme has $K_m$ values of 0.24-0.67 mM for these substrates. The enzyme was partly inactivated after heating at $80^{\circ}C$ or higher temperature for 30 min. The enzyme was stimulated by various thiol compounds such as reduced glutathione, dithiothreitol, L-cysteine, and $\beta$-mercaptoethanol. This is a second example of a plant thioltransferase which was purified and characterized.

  • Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL; EC 4.3.1.5), the first enzyme in the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, catalyzes the elimination reaction of ammonium ion from L-phenylalanine. PAL was purified from the cytosolic fraction of Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris ssp. napus var. pekinensis) through ammonium sulfate fractionation, DEAE-cellulose chromatography, Sephadex G-200 chromatography, and Q-Sepharose chromatography. It consists of four identical subunits, the molecular mass of which was estimated to be about 38,000 daltons on SDS-PAGE. The optimal pH and temperature of the purified enzyme are 8~9 and $45^{\circ}C$, respectively. Its activity is greatly inhibited by $Zn^{2+}$ ion, and strongly activated by caffeic acid. The purified PAL has some different characteristics compared to those obtained with other PALs.

  • In the present study, bulk anisotropic nanocrystalline $SmCo_5$ magnets were prepared by hot deformation. The effect of deformation temperature on the texture and magnetic properties are presented, based on which the mechanism of plastic deformation and texture formation during the hot deformation process is discussed. Our analyses reveal that deformation temperature is one of the most important parameters that determine the texture of $SmCo_5$ grains. We suggest that diffusion creep plastic deformation occurs during hot deformation, which is very sensitive to the energy gain provided by an increase in temperature.

  • Glycosidase activities were tested from the grape berries, Vitis labruscana B. Takasumi. Among various glycosidases, $\alpha$-D-galactosidase was found to be the most active in the flesh and other glycosidases were considerably active in the order of the following: $\alpha$-D-mannosidase>$\alpha$-D-glucosidase>$\beta$-D-glucosidase>$\beta$-D-galactosidase. In the seeds, $\alpha$-D-glucosidase activity was the highest and other glycosidases such as $\alpha$-D-galactosidase, $\beta$-D-glucosidase, and $\beta$-D-galactosidase were still significantly active. The $\alpha$-D-galactosidase in the grape flesh was purified over 83-folds through salting-out with $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ and a series of chromatographies employing Sephadex G-50, Octyl-Sepharose, Q-Sepha- rose, and Biogel P-100. The enzyme was a monomer of 45 kDs as determined through SDS-PAGE and Sephacryl S-200 chromatography. The purified enzyme showed a preference of $\alpha$-D-galactose to $\beta$-D-galactose as a substrate about 5.4 times. Sulfhydryl specific reagents such as N-ethylmaleimide and iodoacetamide significantly inhibited the enzyme activity to the extents of 48 and 52% of its initial activity, respectively. The optimumpH range of $\alpha$-D-galactosidase was around 6.5-7.0. The enzyme activity increased by 46% in the presence of 1mM $Fe^{2+}$.

  • An extracellular metalloprotease, Btmp, was partially purified from the culture supernatant of Bacillus thuringiensis 29-126, isolated from animal feces collected in a zoological garden in Japan, by ultrafiltration, ammonium sulfate precipitation, and a set of chromatography on Sephadex G-75 and High-Q. The molecular mass of the protease was estimated to be 60 kDa by SDS-PAGE. The enzyme showed optimum activity at $50^{\circ}C$ and pH 6.0, and had a half-life of 14 min at $50^{\circ}C$. The enzyme activity was not influenced by $Na^+$, $K^+$, $As^+$, $Mg^{+2}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Ba^{2+}$, and phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride, but it was moderately inhibited by $Zn^{+2}$ at a concentration of 1.0 mM, while the activity was significantly inhibited to less than 50 % by $Cu^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Interestingly, the enzyme was activated to 178 % by 1.0 mM of $Mn^{2+}$. From these results, it may be suggested that the protease is a novel extracellular manganeseactivated metalloprotease.
