  • Let H be a Krull monoid with class group G such that every class contains a prime divisor. Then every nonunit $a{\in}H$ can be written as a finite product of irreducible elements. If $a=u_1{\cdot}\;{\ldots}\;{\cdot}u_k$ with irreducibles $u_1,{\ldots},u_k{\in}H$, then k is called the length of the factorization and the set L(a) of all possible k is the set of lengths of a. It is well-known that the system ${\mathcal{L}}(H)=\{{\mathcal{L}}(a){\mid}a{\in}H\}$ depends only on the class group G. We study the inverse question asking whether the system ${\mathcal{L}}(H)$ is characteristic for the class group. Let H' be a further Krull monoid with class group G' such that every class contains a prime divisor and suppose that ${\mathcal{L}}(H)={\mathcal{L}}(H^{\prime})$. We show that, if one of the groups G and G' is finite and has rank at most two, then G and G' are isomorphic (apart from two well-known exceptions).

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of using Hermetia illucens larvae as environmental purification insects on ammonia and Hanwoo manure for 15 days in the Hanwoo farms. H.illucens larvae were allocated into four treatment groups and three replicates using a randomized block design. The treatments were as follows: control, normal 1000 g of Hanwoo manure, T1, 1000 g of Hanwoo manure + 100 g of 2nd instar H.illucens L. larvae, T2, 1000 g of Hanwoo manure + 100 g of 3rd instar H.illucens L. larvae, and T3, 1000 g of Hanwoo manure + 100 g of 4th instar H.illucens L. larvae. After 0 days, ammonia fluxes did not occur in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th instar H.illucens larvae treatments (p<0.05). Among the characteristics of Hanwoo manure, the pH and nitrogen content increased for each larvae instar of H.illucens, whereas ADF and NDF content decreased (p<0.05). In particular, nitrogen contents were found to be highest in the 3rd instar larvae of H.illucens owing to their greater ability to decompose Hanwoo manure than larvae at other growth stages.

  • Two stage fermentations of glucose/xylose mixture which is similar composition with rice straw hemicellulose hydrolysate were performed by Candida mogii ATCC 18364. In first stage, glucose was consumed rapidly for cell growth in aerobic condition (2 vvm, 300 rpm), then D-xylose was used for xylitol production in semi-aerobic condition (1 vvm, 300 rpm). After 4 days of fermentation, about $24\;g/{\ell}$ xylitol was produced with a yield of 0.58 g/g and volumetric productivity of $0.25\;g/{\ell}{\cdot}h$. To improve the xylitol yield by reduction of xylose consumption for cell growth and maintenance, D-glucose was continuously supplemented during the second stage of fermentation. By D-glucose feeding of $6.8\;g/{\ell}{\cdot}$ day, xylitol was produced up to $29\;g/{\ell}$ with a yield of 0.8 g/g and volumetric productivity $0.30\;g/{\ell}{\cdot}h$ which are 1.2-1.3 times higher than those obtained without D-glucose feeding.

  • Background: Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) is associated with chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, gastric adenocarcinomas and mucosa associated tissue lymphomas. Cytotoxin associated gene A (CagA) is one of the virulence factors of H.pylori. It is hypothesized that reactive oxygen species (ROS) play roles in H.pylori associated disease especially in development of gastric adenocarcinoma. Individuals infected with H.pylori bearing CagA produce more ROS than others. 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8OHdG) is an in vitro marker of DNA damage and oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between 8OHdG level, H.pylori infection and CagA and alterations of serum 8OHdG level after H.pylori eradication. Materials and Methods: Patients admitted with dyspeptic complaints and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy were assessed. H.pylori was determined from histopathology of specimens. Serum 8OHdG levels of three groups (H.pylori negative, H. pylori positive CagA negative and H.pylori positive CagA positive) were compared. Patients with H.pylori infection received eradication therapy. Serum 8OHdG levels pretreatment and posttreatment were also compared. Results: In total, 129 patients (M/F, 57/72) were enrolled in the study. Serum 8OHdG level of H.pylori negative, H. pylori positive CagA negative and H.pylori positive CagA positive groups were significantly different ($5.77{\pm}1.35ng/ml$, $5.43{\pm}1.14ng/ml$ and $7.57{\pm}1.25ng/ml$ respectively, p=0.05). Furthermore, eradication therapy reduced serum 8OHdG level ($6.10{\pm}1.54ng/ml$ vs $5.55{\pm}1.23ng/ml$, p=0.05). Conclusions: Individuals infected with H.pylori bearing CagA strains have the highest serum 8OHdG level and eradication therapy decreases the serum 8OHdG level. To the best of our knowledge this is the first study that evaluated the effect of CagA virulence factor on serum 8OHdG level and the effect of eradication therapy on serum 8OHdG levels together. Eradication of CagA bearing H.pylori may prevent gastric adenocarcinoma by decreasing ROS. 8OHdG level may thus be a good marker for prevention from gastric adenocarcinoma.

  • The polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are mostly synthesized by the marine original microorganisms. In this study, the effect of concentrations of glucose, NaCl, and $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ on both the growth and the production of lipid and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was investigated using Thraustochytrium aureum ATCC 34304. $Y_{Lipid/X}\;and\;Y_{DHA/Lipid}$ increased according to the increase of initial glucose concentration until 15 g/L of glucose. The maximum values of $Y_{Lipid/X}\;and\;Y_{DHA/Lipid}$ were 0.18 g/g and 0.41 g/g respectively at 15 g/L of glucose. The biomass yield, $Y_{x/s}$, however, was constant as 0.378 g/g regardless of initial glucose concentrations in the range of 5 g/L to 25 g/L. The specific growth rate of T. aureum increased also with initial glucose concentration from 5 g/L and 15 g/L. The maximum value was $0.79\;day^{-1}$ at 15 g/L of glucose, and the growth rate decreased to $0.57\;day^{-1}$ and remained constant according to initial sugar concentration in the range of higher than 15 g/L of glucose. The concentration of NaCl was changed from 0 g/L to 48 g/L, in order to study the characteristics of the growth and the production of lipid and DHA according to NaCl concentration. The growth and the production of lipid as well as DHA stopped all at 0 g/L of NaCl and the maximum values of all the three variables occurred at 24 g/L. The effect of $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ concentration was also investigated not to find the growth and the production of lipid and DHA at 0 g/L. However, the growth and the Production with $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ concentration increased to reach the maximum values at 18 g/L of $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$.

  • The pharmacokinetic properties of oxolinic acid (OA) were studied after oral administration, intraperitoneal injection and dipping to cultured olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus (average 90 g, $23{\pm}1{^{\circ}C}$). Plasma samples were taken at 3, 5, 10, 15, 24, 30, 48, 96 and 144 h post-dose. In oral dosage at 15, 30 and 60 ㎎/㎏, the peak plasma concentrations of OA, which attained at 10~15 h post-dose, were 1.92, 2.45 and 3.72 $\mu{g}/m\ell$, respectively. In intraperitoneal injection with 10 and 20 ㎎/㎏, the peak plasma concentrations of OA, which attained at 10 h post-dose, were 4.1 and 4.8 $\mu{g}/m\ell$, respectively. In dipping in 30 and 50 ppm for 1 h, peak concentrations were observed at 5 h and 30 h post-dose, were 0.22 and 0.38 $\mu{g}/m\ell$, respectively. The kinetic profile of absorption, distribution and elimination of OA in plasma were analyzed fitting to a one-compartment model by WinNonlin program. Calculated parameters for a single oral dosage of 15, 30 and 60 ㎎/㎏, respectively, were: AUC (the area under the concentration-time curve)=70.93, 120.0 and 141.86 $\mu{g}$ $h/m\ell$ $T_{max}$ (time for maximum concentration)=16.22, 20.39 and 17.33 h; $C_{max}$ (maximum concentration)=D1.61, 2.40 and 3.01 $\mu{g}/m\ell$. Following intraperitoneal injection of 10 and 20 ㎎/㎏, these parameters were AUC=184.7 and 315.92 $\mu{g}$ $h/m\ell$ $T_{max}$=5.91 and 6.26 h; $C_{max}$=4.19 and 4.45 $\mu{g}/m\ell$. Following dipping at 30 and 50 ppm, these parameters were AUC=17.58 and 21.69 $\mu{g}$ $h/m\ell$ $T_{max}$=19.08 and 31.43 h; $C_{max}$x=0.22 and 0.25 $\mu{g}/m\ell$.

  • For the economically feasible production of ethanol, utilization of SFW (saccharified food wastes) as substrate for synchronous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) process was developed in this study. When 200 g of food wastes and 40 mL of enzyme ($amylase activity,\;3.0\;U/m{\ell}$) were reacted, production rate of reducing sugar was $5.84\;g/{\ell}{\cdot}h$, and consumption rate was $-3.88\;g/{\ell}{\cdot}h\;at\;35^{\circ}C$ So suitable condition of SSF was concluded at temperature of $35^{\circ}C$. Also, optimal enzyme concentration of SSF was concluded in $2.0\;U/m{\ell}$, at this condition, the production rate of reducing sugar was $4.80\;g/{\ell}{\cdot}h$ At SSF process, when 50 g of food wastes was supplied in 12 h interval, $64\;g/{\ell}$ of ethanol and 0.45 g-ethanol/g-reducing sugar in yield were obtained in 120 h fermentation. Thus, the technology of high yield of ethanol production using food wastes was confirmed. And semi-continuos SSF system for cutting off cost of enzymatic saccharification was developed in this study.

  • Effects of temperature ($13{\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$, $23{\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$) on the pharmacokinetic properties of nalidixic acid (NA), piromidic acid (PA) and oxolinic acid (OA) were studied after oral administration to cultured olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. Serum concentrations of these antimicrobials were determined after oral administration of a single dosage of 60 mg/kg body weight (average 700 g). At $23{\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$, the peak serum concentrations of NA, PA and OA, which attained at 10 h, 24 h and 30 h post-dose, were 11.55, 3.79 and $1.12{\mu}g/m\ell$, respectively. At $13{\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$, the peak serum concentrations of NA, PA and OA, which attained at 10 h, 15 h and 30 h post-dose, were 6.36, 1.4 and $1.01{\mu}g/m\ell$, respectively. Better absorption of NA and PA was noted at $23{\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$ compared to $23{\pm}13^{\circ}C$. The elimination of NA from serum of olive flounder was considerably faster at $23{\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$ than at $13{\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$. However, both absorption and elimination of OA were not affected significantly by temperature. The kinetic profile of absorption, distribution and elimination of these antimicrobials in serum were analyzed by fitting to a one- and two compartment model, with WinNonlin program. In the one compartment model for NA, AUC, Tmax and Cmax at $23{\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$ were $258.26{\mu}g{\cdot}h/m\ell$, 10.67 h and $8.91{\mu}g/m\ell$, respectively. The AUC, $T_{max}$ and $C_{max}$ at $13{\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$ were $341.45 {\mu}g{\cdot}h/m\ell$, 7.72 h and $6.23{\mu}g/m\ell$, respectively. In the one compartment model for PA, AUC, $T_{max}$ and $C_{max}$ at $23{\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$ were $248.12{\mu}g{\cdot}h/m\ell$, 21.15 h and $3.09{\mu}g/m\ell$, respectively. The AUC, $T_{max}$ and $C_{max}$ at $13{\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$ were $103.89{\mu}g{\cdot}h/m\ell$, 12.89 h and $1.22{\mu}g/m\ell$, respectively. In the two compartment model for OA, AUC, $T_{max}$ and $C_{max}$ at $23{\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$ were $138.20{\mu}g{\cdot}h/m\ell$, 23.95 h and $1.06{\mu}g/m\ell$, respectively. The AUC, $T_{max}$ and $T_{max}$ at $13{\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$ were $159.10{\mu}g{\cdot}h/m\ell$, 28.03 h and $1.02{\mu}g/m\ell$, respectively.

  • The pH of coconut based activated carbon was changed by treating with NaOH and HNO3 and we have calculated the adsorption amounts of ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and methylmercaptan on the activated carbons using the break-through time which was obtained from break-through curve experiments. As a result of this study, the adsorption amounts of ammonia Has on the activated carbons were 2,6 mg/g, 17.2 mg/g and 31.6 mg/g with the pH 11, pH 7 and pH 3, respectively. These results indicated that the adsorption ability of ammonia on activated carbon was increased with decreasing the pH of activated carbon. Otherwise, in the cases of the adsorption experiment of hydrogen sulfide and methylmercaptan on the activated carbons with different pH. the activated carbon with pH 11 showed higher adsorption capacity than the activated carbons with pH 7 and pH 3. The adsorption amounts of hydrogen sulfide and methylmercaptan were 39.9 mg/g and 178 mg/g with pH 11, respectively. Finally, we analyzed the amount of ammonia delivered from 88 Lights cigarette made of triple filter which contained the activated carbon. The amount of ammonia delivered to smoke from the filter cigarette containing the activated carbon with pH 3 was 45.1${\mu}g$/cig. This value was lower 23.8 % than that from the activated carbon with the pH 11.
