Human Iris Recognition using Wavelet Transform and Neural Network

  • Recently, many researchers have been interested in biometric systems such as fingerprint, handwriting, key-stroke patterns and human iris. From the viewpoint of reliability and robustness, iris recognition is the most attractive biometric system. Moreover, the iris recognition system is a comfortable biometric system, since the video image of an eye can be taken at a distance. In this paper, we discuss human iris recognition, which is based on accurate iris localization, robust feature extraction, and Neural Network classification. The iris region is accurately localized in the eye image using a multiresolution active snake model. For the feature representation, the localized iris image is decomposed using wavelet transform based on dyadic Haar wavelet. Experimental results show the usefulness of wavelet transform in comparison to conventional Gabor transform. In addition, we present a new method for setting initial weight vectors in competitive learning. The proposed initialization method yields better accuracy than the conventional method.

Face recognition using Wavelets and Fuzzy C-Means clustering (웨이블렛과 퍼지 C-Means 클러스터링을 이용한 얼굴 인식)

  • In this paper, the wavelet transform is performed in the input 256$\times$256 color image and decomposes a image into low-pass and high-pass components. Since the high-pass band contains the components of three directions, edges are detected by combining three parts. After finding the position of face using the histogram of the edge component, a face region in low-pass band is cut off. Since RGB color image is sensitively affected by luminances, the image of low pass component is normalized, and a facial region is detected using face color informations. As the wavelet transform decomposes the detected face region into three layer, the dimension of input image is reduced. In this paper, we use the 3000 images of 10 persons, and KL transform is applied in order to classify face vectors effectively. FCM(Fuzzy C-Means) algorithm classifies face vectors with similar features into the same cluster. In this case, the number of cluster is equal to that of person, and the mean vector of each cluster is used as a codebook. We verify the system performance of the proposed algorithm by the experiments. The recognition rates of learning images and testing image is computed using correlation coefficient and Euclidean distance.

  • Face recognition system has advanctage to automatically recognize a person without causing repulsion at deteciton process. However, the face recognition system has a drawback to show lower perfomance according to illumination variation unlike the other biometric systems using fingerprint and iris. Therefore, this paper proposed a robust face recogntion method against illumination varition by slective fusion technique using both visible and infrared faces based on fuzzy linear disciment analysis(fuzzy-LDA). In the first step, both the visible image and infrared image are divided into four bands using wavelet transform. In the second step, Euclidean distance is calculated at each subband. In the third step, recognition rate is determined at each subband using the Euclidean distance calculated in the second step. And then, weights are determined by considering the recognition rate of each band. Finally, a fusion face recognition is performed and robust recognition results are obtained.

  • The research fields of mobile robot consist of three parts. The first is path planning, the second is the application of new sensors, and the last is a combination of the communication technology and mobile robot. In this paper we treat the path-planning. We use a Bayesian probability map, Distance Transform and Fuzzy logic for a path-planning. DT and Fuzzy logic algorithms search for path in entire, continuous free space and unifies global path planning and local path planning. It is efficient and effective method when compared with navigators using traditional approaches.

  • This paper propose a method for pattern recogniton using spectrum analyzer and fuzzy ARTMAP. Contour sequences obtained from 2-D planar images represent the Euclidean distance between the centroid and all boundary pixels of the shape, and are related to the overall shape of the images. The Fourier transform of contour sequence and spectrum analyzer are used as a means of feature selection and data reduction. The three dimensional spectral feature vectors are extracted by spectrum analyzer from the FFT spectrum. These Spectral feature vectors are invariant to shape translation, rotation, and scale transformations. The fuzzy ARTMAP neural network which is combined with two fuzzy ART modules is trained and tested with these feature vectors. The experiments include 4 aircrafts and 4 industrial parts recognition process are presented to illustrate the high performance of this proposed method in the ion problems of noisv shapes.

  • In this paper, a new tube-radius-measuring algorithm has been proposed for effectively measuring the radii of small tubes under severe noise conditions that can also perform well when metal scraps that make it difficult to measure the radius correctly are inside the tube hole. In the algorithm, we adopt a fuzzy searching method that searches for the center of the inner circle by using fuzzy parameters for distance and orientation from the initial search point. The proposed algorithm has been implemented and tested on both synthetic and real-world tube images, and the performance is compared to existing circle-detection algorithms, such as the Hough transform and RANSAC methods, to prove the accuracy and effectiveness of the algorithm. From this comparison, it is concluded that the proposed algorithm has excellent performance in terms of measurement accuracy and computation time.

  • This paper presents concrete pattern recognition method to identify the strength of concrete by evidence accumulation with multiple parameters based on artificial intelligence techniques. At first, zero-crossing(ZCR), mean frequency(MEANF), median frequency(MEDF) and autoregressive model coefficient(ARC) are extracted as feature parameters from ultrasonic signal of concrete. Pattern recognition is carried out through the evidence accumulation procedure using distance measured with reference parameters. A fuzzy mapping function is designed to transform the distances for the application of the evidence accumulation method. Results are presented to support the feasibility of the suggested approach for concrete pattern recognition.

  • This paper presents concrete pattern recognition method to identify the strength of concrete by evidence accumulation with multiple parameters based on artificial intelligence techniques. At first, variance(VAR), zero-crossing(ZCR), mean frequency(MEANF), and autoregressive model coefficient(ARC) and linear cepstrum coefficient(LCC) are extracted as feature parameters from ultrasonic signal of concrete. Pattern recognition is carried out through the evidence accumulation procedure using distance measured with reference parameters. A fuzzy mapping function is designed to transform the distances for the application of the evidence accumulation method. Results(92% successful pattern recognition rate) are presented to support the feasibility of the suggested approach for concrete pattern recognition.
