  • This paper proposes a robust on-line signature verification system based on a new segmentation method and fusion scheme. The proposed segmentation method resolves the problem of segment-to-segment comparison where the variation between reference signature and input signature causes the errors in the location and the number of segments. In addition, the fusion scheme is adopted, which discriminates genuineness by calculating each feature vector's fuzzy membership degree yielded from the proposed segmentation method. Experimental results show that the proposed signature verification system has lower False Reject Rate(FRR) for genuine signature and False Accept Rate(FAR) for forgery signature.

  • Objective : The safety and efficacy of various fusion substitutes in pyogenic osteomyelitis has not been investigated. We evaluated and compared the cadaveric allograft and titanium cages used to reconstruct, maintain alignment and achieve fusion in the management of pyogenic spinal infection. Methods : There were 33 patients with pyogenic osteomyelitis underwent fusion in this study. Fifteen of the 33 patients were operated on by fusion with allografts (cadaveric patella bones) and 18 of those were operated with titanium mesh cages filled with autologous cancellous iliac bone. After the affected disc and vertebral body resection with pus drainage, cadaveric allograft or titanium cages were inserted into the resected space. Posterior transpedicular screw fixation and rod compression in resected space, where cadaveric allograft or titanium cages were inserted, was performed to prevent the malposition in all patients except in 1 case. Recurrent infection was identified by serial erythrocyte sedimentation rate and cross reactive protein follow-up. Osseous union and recurred infection available at a minimum of 2 years following operation was identified. The amount of kyphosis correction and the subsidence were measured radiographically. Results : Spinal fusion was achieved in 29 of 33 patients. In the cadaveric allograft group, 93.3% of patient (14 of 15) showed the osseous union while 83.3% of patient (15 of 18) in the titanium cage group showed union. Subsidence was noted in 12 of the patients. Twelve patients (36.3%) showed unsettling amounts of subsidence postoperatively whereas 46.6% of patients in the cadaveric allograft group and 37.7% of patients in the titanium cage group showed similar subsidence, respectively. There were statistical difference in the fusion rate (p=0.397) and subsidence rate (p=0.276) between the two groups. There was significant statistical difference in the postoperative improvement of segmental kyphosis between the two groups (p=0.022), that is the improvement in sagittal alignment was greater in the titanium cage group than in the cadaveric allograft group. There was no case of recurred infection. Conclusion : The cadaveric allograft and titanium cages are effective and safe in restoring and maintaining sagittal plane alignment without increased incidence in infection recurrence in pyogenic osteomyelitis. The postoperative improvement of segmental kyphosis was better in the cage group.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of $Ca^{2+}$ concentration in fusion medium on the fusion, nuclear morphology and the development of bovine somatic cell nuclear transfer embryos. Bovine skin cells were transferred into an enucleated oocyte and fused with cytoplasm in the fusion medium containing with 0.05 to 1.0 mM Cacl$_2$. Nuclear transfer embryos were activated with a combination of A23187 and cycloheximide. Nuclear transfer embryos were fixed at 3 h after fusion or cultured for 7 ~8 days. Fusion rate was significantly (P<0.01) increased by increasing the $Ca^{2+}$ concentrations in the fusion medium from 0.05 mM (56.6%) to 0.5 mM (50.1%) and 1.0 mM (84.3%). More than 80% of reconstituted embryos underwent premature chromosome condensation (PCC) with 0.05, 0.1 mM CaCl$_2$, whereas 54.5% and 59.3% of embryos formed pronucleus (PN) directly without PCC in the 0.5 and 1.0 mM CaCl$_2$, groups. Blastocyst formation rates were significantly (P<0.05) different between 0.1 mM and 1.0 mM CaCl$_2$groups. From the present result, it is suggested that the elevated $Ca^{2+}$ concentrations in fusion medium can enhance the fusion and blastocyst formation rates of bovine nuclear transfer embryos.bryos.

  • We present a new multimodal biometric authentication method, which performs both feature-level fusion and decision-level fusion. After generating support vector machines for new features made by integrating face and voice features, the final decision for authentication is made by integrating decisions of face SVM classifier, voice SVM classifier and integrated features SVM clssifier. We justify our proposal by comparing our method with traditional one by experiments with XM2VTS multimodal database. The experiments show that our multilevel fusion algorithm gives higher recognition rate than the existing schemes.

  • In this paper, authors propose the sensor fusion system that can recognize multiple 3D objects from 2D projection images and tactile information. The proposed system focuses on improving recognition performance of 3D object. Unlike the conventional object recognition system that uses image sensor alone, the proposed method uses tactual sensors in addition to visual sensor. Neural network is used to fuse these informations. Tactual signals are obtained from the reaction force by the pressure sensors at the fingertips when unknown objects are grasped by four-fingered robot hand. The experiment evaluates the recognition rate and the number of teaming iterations of various objects. The merits of the proposed systems are not only the high performance of the learning ability but also the reliability of the system with tactual information for recognizing various objects even though visual information has a defect. The experimental results show that the proposed system can improve recognition rate and reduce learning time. These results verify the effectiveness of the proposed sensor fusion system as recognition scheme of 3D object.

  • .betha.-galactosidase activity of Escherichia coli cells containing operon fusion nhaA'-'lacZ was monitored to study the regulation of expression of nhaA gene under various conditions. The expression of the fusion was enhanced only by chemicals containing Na$^{+}$ or Li$^{+}$. This Na$^{+}$ or Li$^{+}$. This Na$^{+}$(Li$^{+}$)-specific enhancement of .betha.-galactosidase activity represented the increase in the rate of synthesis of .betha.-galactosidase rather than the decrease in the breakdown rate. The induction pattern was influenced by copy numbers of the gene. Induction by Na$^{+}$ or Li$^{+}$ was concentration and time dependent, reaching maximum 5-6 fold induction after 2 hours at 0.4-0.5 M for Na$^{+}$ or at 0.25-0.35 M for Li$^{+}$, Although the expression was induced at much lower concentration of Na$^{+}$ at alkaline pH values than at neutral pH in the presence of Na$^{+}$, alkaline pH itself did ot induced the expression of the fusion in the absence of Na$^{+}$. Temperature shift and growth phase of culture did not affect the level of induction.he level of induction.

  • Ankle osteoarthritis is a debilitating condition that causes severe pain associated with functional impairment and decreased activity. Ankle osteoarthritis, unlike that of the knee or hip joint, is rare in primary arthritis. Most cases are traumatic arthritis that occur after ankle sprain or fractures or chronic ankle instability. Although ankle fusion has been regarded as the standard treatment of ankle osteoarthritis in the past, total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) is increasing due to the development of the implant design and surgical techniques. TAA is biomechanically superior to ankle fusion by preserving the movement of the ankle joint. In particular, it is functionally superior to ankle fusion because it enables normal joint motion during gait. In addition, there is an advantage of preserving the movement of the hindfoot and reducing the abnormal stress applied to the adjacent joints after ankle fusion to prevent the occurrence of long-term adjacent joint arthritis. Although the short-term and mid-term results of TAA have been reported to be excellent, long-term follow-up has a relatively low survival rate and high complication rate compared to total knee or hip arthroplasty. Therefore, continuous and further research is needed.

  • Human being recognizes the physical world by integrating a great variety of sensory inputs, the information acquired by their own action, and their knowledge of the world using hierarchically parallel-distributed mechanism. In this paper, authors propose the sensor fusion system that can recognize multiple 3D objects from 2D projection images and tactile informations. The proposed system focuses on improving recognition performance of 3D objects. Unlike the conventional object recognition system that uses image sensor alone, the proposed method uses tactual sensors in addition to visual sensor. The experiment evaluates the recognition rate and the number of learning iterations of various objects. The merits of the proposed systems are not only the high performance of the learning ability but also the reliability of the system with tactual information for recognizing various objects even though the visual sensory signals get defects. The experimental results show that the proposed system can improve recognition rate and reduce teeming time. These results verify the effectiveness of the proposed sensor fusion system as recognition scheme for 3D objects.

  • A typical wear pattern was reported to resemble the fatigue crack growth behavior considering its mechanism, especially for amorphous rubbers such as styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). In this study, the wear and crack growth rates were correlated using two separate experiments for carbon black and silica-reinforced selected rubber compounds. The wear rate was determined using a blade-type abrasion tester, where the frictional energy input during wearing was measured. The crack propagation rate was determined under different tearing energy inputs using a home-made fatigue tester, with a pure-shear test specimen containing pre-cracks. The rates of abrasion and crack propagation were plotted on a log-log scale as a function of frictional and tearing energies, respectively. Reasonable agreement was observed, indicating that the major mechanism of the abrasion pattern involved repeated crack propagation.
