This study is intended to forecast changes in Ubiquitous technology-based residential environment since the digital revolution so as to suggest the direction of furniture design in the near future. Among Ubiquitous technologies, the intelligent digital technology applied to a residential environment is defined as "Smart Digital Technology." Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy named the residential environment where such technology is applied "Smart Home." Smart Home is strategically creating intelligent residential environment where interactivity is made between human, furniture and residential environment, based on home automation, home network and intelligent sensor technology. Smart furniture is based on strategic characteristics of smart home. Its convergence with IT equipments is being made. Largely, smart furniture has three characteristics as below: First, smart furniture provides users with information on home management, health management, education and fashion. not just functioning as storage space. Second, smart furniture that is a new lifestyle pattern will suggest a new aesthetic standard based on unsettled shapes and innovative structure. Finally, it gives convenience to users intelligently. Namely, smart furniture, "intelligent informative furniture", will be suggested as a new paradigm.

Throughout the twentieth century, American furniture was subject to a number of influences-both domestic and foreign. Especially, in the first half of the twentieth century, there were strong foreign influences compare to the later half of the century. Therefore, this study aimed for discussing foreign influences and for addressing issues such as attitudes toward materials, ornamentation, and technology. As a result, this study suggests how American furniture becomes instinctive moving away from strong foreign influences from the second half of the century. The twentieth century was a period of rapid and dynamic change for American furniture design. In many ways, the designs throughout the century were reflective of the social, political, and economic culture of the time. With the birth of the modern movement in Europe and a strong influx of foreign immigrants, American design in the first half of the century was characterized by a reliance on European and foreign influences. However, after the two world wars, strong domestic influences came into play. The two world wars provided the essential catalysts for change: new materials, developing technology, and changes in life style and consumer values. A historical examination of design trends and individual designers illustrates how American furniture design evolved during this period.

Marcel Breuer is considered one of the most important furniture designers of the 20th century. He studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar from 1920 to 1924 and in 1925 became master of the furniture studio at the Bauhaus in Dessau. Virtually from the outset, he was one of the most prolific and inventive designers at the bauhaus and fulfilled its claim to create designs for serial production. Gropius, the Bauhaus founder, had a profound influence on his furniture designs. In 1925, Breuer created the tubular-steel armchair, which revolutionized design and technique in the field, marking the advent of a new era. The furniture that was developed, by him and by others, from this design - technically cool, but light, elegant and clear - became the very symbol of modernism. Despite the success of his tubular-steel furniture, Breuer went on to explore the use of other new materials, such as aluminium and plywood. He made use of these new materials, which were associated with new technologies, to create new forms, as it were, some which proved to be foreunners of later developments in furniture design. Breuer had a profound influence on the evolution of modern design through his furniture designs, which received worldwide recognition and acclaim. His work unified functionality and beauty in a way that was to become a valid expression of its time and simultaneously far ahead of it.

Nowadays living space has been small-sized due to a rise in the standard of living, change of recognition on the increase of housing for the singles, and frequent movements of duty place, etc. and the furnitures naturally evolved assembly and multi-functionality. However, it retuned with an economic charge in the consumers and lost the uniformity in a small-sized living space as well since the furniture depended on the each miscellaneous household goods or products and came to be used. Hereupon it was demanded the system where the various furnitures are to fit to here. This study aimed at this point firstly examined a new environment change which it follows till a small living space is demanded through lots of literature, after understanding the concept of the system furniture, I classified expressive types of system furniture in modern environment and analyzed the design quality and characteristics in it by selecting well-known furniture magazines inside and outside of the country and extracting and analyzing system furniture images which are recorded in advertisements or articles. The objective of this study is to present MMC(Multi Modular Coordination, a system furniture design based on this analysis that inquiring the problems with function, structure, assembly which other existing system furnitures are facing enabled to apply a basic data in unit-module planning and by sampling embodiment modeling by uses.

Currently, the beauty of Korean traditional furniture has been changed irregularly and even the traditional character has been distorted. The purpose of the study is to examine the current situations of traditional bedroom-furnitures that are reproduced and sold at the markets in Korea. The eight companies were selected as a research sample. All those companies also participated at the "Living-design Fair 2003 and 2004" The traditional bedroom-furnitures were the limited products as a research target. As a method of the research, the content analysis such as names, dimensions and types was used. The results of research were as follows： 1) Using the confused names for a same item, 2) Changes of dimensions, 3) Diversification of the types, 4) Mixing with Japanese style furniture in the Korean traditional furniture market. On the basis of the results, selected eight companies were divided into three types： First, representation of traditions near to the prototype, second, reforming to be suitable to the contemporary life-style, and the last, mixing of Japanese style furniture. This research will make us be concerned about reproduced Korean traditional furniture and established the position to seek for Koreanity. This research expected to be a reference to develope Korean traditional furniture industry, opportunity of verification for reproduced Korean traditional furniture companies and find out the change of life-style through a comparison analysis of the original traditional furniture.furniture.

In the radically changing market situation, surface materials of student furniture are a very important element to decide the consumption pattern and the market price. Thus, this study examined the characteristics of surface materials by classifying the student furniture into children's, juniors', and seniors' furniture while accessing the features of such surface materials through Glulam, veneer, poly paper, finishing foil, high pressure melamine (HPM), and low pressure melamine (LPM), and PVC vinyl. When taking a look at the surface materials that were most frequently produced in each domestic furniture company, the combined materials that used more than 2 elements (31.88%), LPM (23.19%), and Glulam (20.29%) were introduced at the market in the order. Regarding the analysis made on colors, the combination colors took more than half (55.32%) followed by brown (13.83%) and beige (11.7%) in the order. Based on the results derived from the analysis, the study suggests to stress more importance to surface materials when developing student furniture and to exert efforts for the consistent development of new materials and quality improvement, as a way to accelerate the development of the furniture industry in Korea.

Library is a communication channel between book and human. Specially public library furniture plays an important role from every aspect in information materials and users, among users and in relationship between library managers and users. This study defined library furniture as a communication channel which connects library materials and users and was based on 35 local libraries and 12 overseas libraries. The author studied major elements and characteristics which constitute communication types among storage furniture, furniture in reading areas and furniture in digital reading area. The followings are the results from the study. First, storage furniture should be designed by reflecting characteristics of library materials and for effective delivering to the users. Therefore utmost communication can be made by searching for various designs in book-shelves and effective manner of display. Secondly, furniture in reading areas should support various users' needs from customized browsing to long hour studying and there should be properly supported for private space and correspondent reading postures. The third, there are needs for design conditions to support privacy and for comfort from long hour reading and mobility out of posture change in digital reading areas. The fourth, there should be ergonomically designed furniture plan and surroundings in public library which can boost various reading postures. Also furniture plan should be done by considering users' bodies and eyes orientations which can result in improved power of concentration.

This study purposes on continuing experimental research of furniture form creation focused on the importance and necessity for a-formal concept for designers to drift away from general acknowledgement and practice routine to design more radical forms for meeting various needs of late industrialized society, which have not been satisfied with formal and universal designs. This study covers presenting new points of view on research for designers to look for different solutions to widen their consideration in the process of furniture form development and to set up academic data base with the case studies of designers in anti-construction concept to define their experimental challenges for new design form creation, on the basis of overall research on the effects and roles of a-formal approach in the furniture design form creation.

The purpose of this study were to design and develop the user centered desk which considered children with cebral palsy in Korea. The developing process of the desk were performed the convergence study of the University Department of the Social Welfare and the Living Furniture Design. First of all, the 2 students and their professor of the Department of Social Welfare analyzed the literature, observed the children with cebral palsy and the needs survey of the service providers of a Welfare Center for children with cebral palsy. All of the information gathered were provided for the Department of the living Furniture Design. Second, the 2 students and their professor of the Department the Living Furniture Design proceeded the design concept, mocked up the desk for the children with cebral palsy. This was the user centered desk which considered of the features of children with cebral palsy body. Based on the results, the convergence study implications were discussed.

The purpose of human factor study is to help the people in good conditions, and to increase the efficiency of physical productivity and mental creativity Also for the furniture design field, the applications of human scale dimensions are considered as the very important aspects. For the design of the office systems furniture, designer must consider the onveniences of variable users as much as possible. To design the office systems for the various work environment, it is necessary to analyze the human scale dimensions according to the furniture items and the user behaviors. In these days, many countries are interested about the workplace ergonomic regulations to reduce a class of injuries called ‘Musculoskeletal Disorders(MSDs)’ by controlling risk factors. In this study, I intend to research and to analyze the features of human scale dimensions and the user behaviors of office environment, and propose some office furniture design tips.
