  • This paper addresses method which can be used for analyzing thermal stresses of a functionally graded material(FGM) using semi-analytical approach. FGM is a nonhomogeneous material whose composition changes continuously from a metal surface to a ceramic surface. An infinite one dimensional FGM plate is considered. The temperature distribution in the FGM is obtained by approximate Green's function solution. To expedite the convergence of the solutions, alternative Green's function solution is derived and shows good agreement with results from finite difference method. Thermal stresses are calculated using temperature distribution of the plate.

  • This article considers the problems of cylindrical bending of functionally graded plates in which material properties vary through the thickness. The variation of the material properties follows two power-law distributions in terms of the volume fractions of constituents. In addition, this paper considers orthotropic materials rather than isotropic materials. The traction-free condition on the top surface is replaced with the condition of uniform load applied on the top surface. Numerical results are presented to show the effect of the material distribution on the deflections and stresses. Results show that, all other parameters remaining the same, the studied quantities (stress, deflection) of P-FGM and E-FGM plates are always proportional to those of homogeneous isotropic plates. Therefore, one can predict the behaviour of P-FGM and E-FGM plates knowing that of similar homogeneous plates.

  • In this article, thermal post-buckling and primary resonance of the porous functionally graded material (FGM) beams in thermal environment considering the geometric imperfection are studied, the material properties of FGM beams are assumed to vary along the thickness of the beam, meanwhile, the porosity volume fraction, geometric imperfection, temperature, and the elastic foundation are considered, using the Euler-Lagrange equation, the nonlinear vibration equations are derived, after the dimensionless processing, the dimensionless equations of motion can be obtained. Then, the two-step perturbation method is applied to solve the vibration problems, the resonance and thermal post-buckling response relations are obtained. Finally, the functionally graded index, the porosity volume fraction, temperature, geometric imperfection, and the elastic foundation on the resonance behaviors of the FGM beams are presented. It can be found that these parameters can influence the thermal post-buckling and primary resonance problems.

  • This paper aims to fill the technical gap on the elastic buckling behavior of functionally graded material (FGM) grid systems under inplane loads on which few research has been done. Material properties of an FG beam are assumed to vary smoothly in the thickness direction according to power and exponential laws. Based on a hybrid-stress finite element formulation, buckling solutions for FGM grid systems consisting of various aspect ratios and material gradation are provided. The numerical results demonstrate that the aspect ratio and material gradation play an important role in the buckling behavior of FGM grid systems. We believe that the new results obtained from this study, will be very useful to designers and researchers in this field.

  • The functionally graded material (FGM) is the new concept for a heat resisting material. FGM consists of ceramics on one side and metal on the other. A composition and microstructure of an intermediate layer change continuously from ceramics to metal at the micron level. This study is carried out to analyze the thermal shock characteristics of functionally graded PSZ/ metal composites. Heat-resistant property was evaluated by gas burner heating test using $C_2H_2/O_2$ combustion flame. The ceramic surface was heated with burner flame and the bottom surface cooled with water flow. Also, the composition profile and the thickness of the graded layer were varied to study the thermo mechanical response. Furthermore, this study carried out the thermal stress analysis to investigate the thermal characteristics by the finite element method. Acoustic emission (AE) monitoring was performed to detect the microfracture process in a thermal shock test.

  • In this paper, we investigate the static response. natural frequencies and buckling loads of functionally graded material (FGM) plates, using a Navier method. The eigenvalues of the FGM plates and shells are calculated by varying the volume fraction of the ceramic and metallic constituents using a sigmoid function, but their Poisson's ratios of the FGM plates and shells are assumed to be constant. The expressions of the membrane. bending and shear stiffness of FGM plates art more complicated combination of material properties than a homogeneous element. In order to validate the present solutions, the reference solutions of rectangular plates based on the classical theory are used. The various examples of composite and FGM structures are presented. The present results are in good agreement with the reference solutions.

  • Two or more distinct materials are combined into a single functionally graded material (FGM) where the microstructural composition and properties change gradually. Thermal post-buckling behavior of uniform slender FGM beams is investigated independently using the classical Rayleigh-Ritz (RR) formulation and the versatile Finite Element Analysis (FEA) formulation developed in this paper. The von-Karman strain-displacement relations are used to account for moderately large deflections of FGM beams. Bending-extension coupling arising due to heterogeneity of material through the thickness is included. Simply supported and clamped beams with axially immovable ends are considered in the present study. Post-buckling load versus deflection curves and buckled mode shapes obtained from both the RR and FEA formulations for different volume fraction exponents show an excellent agreement with the available literature results for simply supported ends. Response of the FGM beam with clamped ends is studied for the first time and the results from both the RR and FEA formulations show a very good agreement. Though the response of the FGM beam could have been studied more accurately by FEA formulation alone, the authors aim to apply the RR formulation is to find an approximate closed form post-buckling solutions for the FGM beams. Further, the use of the RR formulation clearly demonstrates the effect of bending-extension coupling on the post-buckling response of the FGM beams.

  • In this research, a semi-analytical solution is presented for computing mechanical displacements and thermal stresses in rotating thick cylindrical pressure vessels made of functionally graded material (FGM). The modulus of elasticity, linear thermal expansion coefficient, and density of the cylinder are assumed to change along the axial direction as a power-law function. It is also assumed that Poisson's ratio and thermal conductivity are constant. This cylinder was subjected to non-uniform internal pressure and thermal loading. Thermal loading varies in two directions. The governing equations are derived by the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). Using the multilayer method, a functionally graded (FG) cylinder with variable thickness is divided into n homogenous disks, and n sets of differential equations are obtained. Applying the boundary conditions and continuity conditions between the layers, the solution of this set of equations is obtained. To the best of the researchers' knowledge, in the literature, there is no study carried out bi-directional thermoelastic analysis of clamped-clamped rotating FGM thick-walled cylindrical pressure vessels under variable pressure in the longitudinal direction.

  • In the recent years, functionally graded materials(FGM) have gained considerable attention in the high temperature environment applications. In the present work, study of the deflection and vibration of a functionally graded rectangular plate made of Ti-6Al-4V and Al$_2$O$_3$ is presented. Material properties are graded in the thickness direction of the plate according to volume fraction power law distribution Effects of volume fractions(power law exponent) on the deflection and natural frequency of FGM plate is studied. Also effects of temperature is studied. Wavier Solution is used to analyzed the FGM plate.
