Proposed Approaches on Durability Enhancement of Small Structure fabricated on Camera Lens Surface (카메라 렌즈 표면에 형성된 미세 패턴의 내구성 향상 기법 제안)

  • In this study, approached to improve durability of the multi-functional nano-pattern fabricated on the curved lens surface using nanoimprint lithography (NIL) was proposed, and the effects of the proposed methods on functionality after wear test were examined. To improve the mechanical property of ultraviolet(UV)-curable resin, UV-NIL was conducted at the elevated temperature around $60^{\circ}C$. In addition, micro/nano hierarchical structures was fabricated on the lens surface with a durable film mold. Analysis on the worn surfaces of nano-hole pattern and hierarchical structures and measurements on the static water contact angle and critical water volume for roll-off indicated that the UV curing process with elevated temperature is effective to maintain wettability by increasing hardness of resin. Also, it was found that the micro-scale pattern is effective to protect nano-pattern from damage during wear test.

Contact Lens Prescribing Pattern in Korean During 2010 to 2013 (대한민국의 최근 4년간(2010-2013) 콘택트렌즈 처방 추세)

  • Purpose: To understand the pattern of prescribing contact lenses in Korea from 2010 to 2013. Methods: Four hundred survey questionnaires were randomly posted to Korean Optometric clinics for 4 years. The questionnaire was the same form as a form used for International Contact Lens Prescribing Trend. It was also designed to collect information about the contact lenses prescribed to the first 10 patients after its receipt. Results: 1937 fits were used for the analysis among the four hundred survey questionnaires. The average patient age was $26.2{\pm}7.0$ in 2010, $26.1{\pm}7.6$ in 2011, $24.7{\pm}6.6$ in 2012 and $24.8{\pm}7.2$ in 2013. The patients were mainly women (75%). Of all the soft contact lenses, silicon hydrogel lenses were 18% of fits (17% in 2010, 10% in 2011, 20% in 2012, 24% in 2013). By degine, the percentage of toric design lenses accounted for 17% of soft lenses fits and had increased during 4 years (10% in 2010, 18% in 2011, 16% in 2012, 22% in 2013), and cosmetic contact lens made up for 29% (15% in 2010, 20% in 2011, 40% in 2012, 41% in 2013). Conclusions: The contact lenses wearers were mostly women and the average patient age becomes slightly younger. In relation to the increase in the mumber of younger female contact lens wearers,the percentage of cosmetic lenses prescription was much higher (29%) than the global average (7%), and it has gradually increased for last 4 years. This trend could be related to the growth of beauty market in Korea. By emphasizing on toric lens marketing in manufactures, the prescription rate has been gradually increased.

Comparative Study of Physical Properties of Functional Ophthalmic Hydrogel Lens Using Photo and Thermal Polymerization

  • In this study, HEMA, MMA, AA, and EGDMA were used as basic combinations for manufacturing hydrophilic lenses for ophthalmic applications. In addition, AIBN (thermal polymerization initiator), 2H2M (photo polymerization initiator), and 3-hydroxypyridine (additive) were used to manufacture hydrophilic ophthalmic lenses through thermal polymerization and photo polymerization before their physical properties were measured. The results showed that when ophthalmic lenses were prepared via thermal polymerization and photo polymerization using 3-hydroxypyridine as an additive, their optical and physical properties and surface structures were different in each case, but they all satisfied the physical properties required for ophthalmic lenses.

Hydrogel Contact Lens Materials with Improved UV Blocking Effect

  • HEMA, AA, MMA, and EGDMA as crosslinking agent and AIBN as an initiator, and 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone, 2-ethylhexyl-trans-4-methoxy-cinnamate, 2-hydroxy-4-(methacryloyloxy)benzophenone as additives at 0.1-1.0% ratios were used to manufacture hydrophilic ophthalmic lenses through thermal polymerization before their physical properties were measured. The results showed that the samples containing of 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone and 2-ethylhexyl-trans-4-methoxy-cinnamate resulted in a decrease of the UV blocking performance after high-pressure sterilization whereas the sample containing 2-hydroxy-4-(methacryloyloxy)benzophenone showed no change in the UV blocking performance. It is judged that this is induced by presence or absence of an acyl functional group in benzophenone.

  • Effects of the species Scrophularia takesimensis, S. kakudensis, S. boreali-koreana, and S. buergeriana on rat lens aldose reductase inhibition have been investigated. Among them, the extracts of S. kakudensis and S. boreali-koreana were exhibited good inhibitory potencies compared with those of S. takesimensis and S. buergeriana. The $IC_{50}$ values of the aerial part extracts from S. kakudensis and S. boreali-koreana were demonstrated 0.46 and 0.35 mg/ml, respectively.

  • Demands for high quality and productivity of precision mechanical parts are increasing greatly nowadays due to the rapid growth of information technologies and convergence industries. Therefore, core technologies for fabrication of precision mechanical parts are the fundamental issues, which are the precision machining, micro powder injection molding technologies, MR polishing, micro polymer processes, micro actuation modules and so on. These technologies are directly related to the mass production of high functional devices and machineries. Therefore, this study investigates the fabrication technologies of micro precision molds for advanced devices for possible commercialization in a near future.

Inhibitory Effect of quercetin-3-O-$\alpha$-L-rhamnopyranoside from Chamaecyparis obtuse on Aldose Reductase and Sorbitol Accumulation (백나무로부터 분리된 quercetin-3-O-$\alpha$-L-rhamnopyranoside의 알도스 환원효소 및 솔비톨 억제효과)

  • Taxifolin-3-O-$\beta$-D-xylopyranoside and quercetin-3-O-$\alpha$-L-rhamnopyranoside were isolated from an EtOAc-soluble extract of the leaves of Chamaecyparis obtuse. Quercetin-3-O-$\alpha$-L-rhamnopyranoside was found to possess a potent inhibitory activity of human recombinant aldose reductase in vitro, its $IC_{50}$ value being $11.5\;{\mu}M$. Kinetic analysis showed that quercetin-3-O-$\alpha$-L-rhamnopyranoside exhibited uncompetitive inhibition against DL-glyceraldehyde. Also, quercetin-3-O-$\alpha$-L-rhamnopyranoside suppresses sorbitol accumulation in rat lens under high glucose conditions, demonstrating the potential to prevent sorbitol accumulation in vivo. These results suggest that this compound may be a promising agent in the prevention or treatment of diabetic complications.

Aldose Reductase Inhibition Effect of PhenolicvCompounds Isolated from Paulownia coreana Bark

  • Nine compounds, caffeic acid, naringenin, apigenin, luteolin, kaempferol, verbascoside, isoverbascoside, isocampneoside II, and cistanoside F, were isolated from the EtOAc and n-BuOH fractions of P. coreana bark. The structures of these compounds (1-9) were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and literature data. All the isolates were subjected to in vitro bioassay to evaluate their inhibitory activity against rat lens aldose reductase. Among these, compounds 6 and 8 indicated the significant inhibitory activity on rat lens aldose reductase with $IC_{50}$ values of 2.67 and 5.59 ${\mu}M$, respectively. Especially, The inhibition activity of acteoside was 3.9 times better than that of quercetin as a positive control (10.6 ${\mu}M$). These results suggested that phenylethanoid glycosides are likely to be the potential compounds for the prevention and/or treatment of diabetic complications.

  • This study investigated the effect of the structure of the crosslinking agent used in contact lens polymerization on the physical properties and drug dissolution of contact lenses.es Contact lenses were manufactured using 0.3% and 3% of 4 types of crosslinking agents, respectively, and ofloxacin was used as the drug. Contact lenses using hydrophilic crosslinking agents improved water contents and wettability, and the more hydrophilic functional groups, the greater the effect. Contact lenses with a high concentration of crosslinking agent had a low concentration of eluted drug and a longer release time. The cross-linking agent structure of contact lenses had an effect on improving the performance of contact lenses and controlling drug release.

Synthesis of Polymer Materials Containing Platinum Nanoparticles and Their Application for Contact Lenses (백금 나노입자를 포함한 고분자재료의 합성 및 콘택트렌즈로의 응용)

  • Platinum nanoparticles were added to a mixture of HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), NVP (N-vinyl pyrrolidone) and MMA (methyl methacrylate) in a mould at various concentrations. The resulting mixture was copolymerized by heating at $70^{\circ}C$ for 40 min, $80^{\circ}C$ for 40 min, and $100^{\circ}C$ for 40 min, respectively. The physical properties of contact lens were then measured. The oxygen transmissibility of $9{\sim}15{\times}10^{-9}$ cm/s mL $O_2$/mL ${\times}$ mmHg, water content of 34.22~35.52%, refractive index of 1.432~1.435, visible transmittance of 88.3~91.2% and tensile strength of 0.141~0.152 kgf were obtained. The addition of platinum nanoparticles to the polymer allowed the contact lens to have various colors without artificial coloring agents. The polymer materials satisfied the physical properties required to produce contact lenses, making the material suitable to be applied as a functional material for ophthalmological purposes.
