Functional packaging paper containing botanical antimicrobial agent (BAAG) and inorganic zeolite was developed for antimicrobial activity and adsorption of ethylene gas of the paper. The physical properties of the packaging paper showed different characteristics with addition of BAAG and functional fillers: both tensile strength and burst strength were decreased, but both stiffness and tear strength were slightly increased. Zeolite also contributed to fast removal of ethylene gas known as aging hormone of fruits and vegetables. Alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) was greatly effective to endow the packaging paper with water repellency property.
The surface treatment effects of reinforcement filler were investigated based on the dynamic mechanical properties of mutiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/epoxy composites. The as-received MWCNTs(R-MWCNTs) were chemically modified by direct oxyfluorination method to improve the dispersibility and adhesiveness with epoxy resins in composite system. In order to investigate the induced functional groups on MWCNTs during oxyfluorination, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used. The thermo-mechanical property of MWCNTs/epoxy composite was also measured based on effects of oxyfluorination treatment of MWCNTs. The storage modulus of MWCNTs/epoxy composite was enhanced about 1.27 times through oxyfluorination of MWCNTs fillers at $25^{\circ}C$. The storage modulus of oxyfluorinated MWCNTs (OF73-MWCNTs) reinforced epoxy composite was much higher than that of R-MWCNTs/epoxy composite. It revealed that oxygen content led to the efficient carbon-fluorine covalent bonding during oxyfluorination. These functional groups on surface modified MWCNTs induced by oxyfluorination strikingly made an important role for the reinforced epoxy composite.
Macroporous silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics were fabricated by powder processing and polymer processing using carbon-filled polysiloxane as a precursor. The effects of the starting SiC polytype, template type, and template content on porosity and flexural strength of macroporous SiC ceramics were investigated. The ${\beta}$-SiC powder as a starting material or a filler led to higher porosity than ${\alpha}$-SiC powder, owing to the impingement of growing ${\alpha}$-SiC grains, which were transformed from ${\beta}$-SiC during sintering. Typical flexural strength of powder-processed macroporous SiC ceramics fabricated from ${\alpha}$-SiC starting powder and polymer microbeads was 127 MPa at 29% porosity. In contrast, that of polymer-processed macroporous SiC ceramics fabricated from carbon-filled polysiloxane, ${\beta}$-SiC fillers, and hollow microspheres was 116MPa at 29% porosity. The combination of ${\alpha}$-SiC starting powder and a fairly large amount (10 wt%) of $Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3$ additives led to macroporous SiC ceramics with excellent flexural strength.
Highly porous silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics were fabricated from polysiloxane, SiC and carbon black fillers, AlN-$Y_2O_3$ additives, and poly (ether-co-octene) (PEOc) and expandable microsphere templates. Powder mixtures with a fixed PEOc content (30 wt%) and varying SiC filler contents from 0-21 wt% were compression-molded. During the pyrolysis process, the polysiloxane was converted to SiOC, the PEOc generated a considerable degree of interconnected porosity, and the expandable microspheres generated fine cells. The polysiloxane-derived SiOC and carbon black reacted and synthesized nano-sized SiC with a carbothermal reduction during a heat-treatment. Subsequent sintering of the compacts in a nitrogen atmosphere produced highly porous SiC ceramics with porosities ranging from 78 % to 82 % and a flexura lstrength of up to ~7 MPa.
In this work, carbon black(CBs)-embed multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) as conductive fillers for activated carbon(ACs)-based electrodes for supercapacitor were prepared by chemical reduction of oxidized MWNTs and CBs. The effect of CBs-MWNT composites on electrochemical performances of ACs-based electrodes were investigated as a function of CB-MWNT ratio. It was found that CBs-MWNTs composites were formed by the reduction reaction of the functional groups of oxidized MWNTs and CBs. It was resulted in the conjugation of CBs onto the MWNT having high surface area and aspect ratio, leading to the enhanced electrical properties of MWNTs. The electrochemical performances, such as current density, charge-discharge, and specific capacitance of the ACs/CBs-MWNT electrodes were higher than that of ACs/MWNTs and conventional ACs/CB electrodes, which was attributed to the synergistic effect of CBs-MWNTs as a conductive filler.

Many industrial sources of proteins can be used as raw materials to produce films, molded materials, and various hollow items either by "casting" techniques or by "thermoplastic processing". Combining proteins with natural fibbers, paper or biodegradable polyesters is very promising to form biodegradable composites witch take advantage of the barrier and mechanical properties of each component. Using nano-fillers to form nanocomposites has also been shown to be interesting to improve properties. Production, with low transformation cost, of protein based materials to form biodegradable materials with controlled functional properties for food uses, medical uses, packaging, agriculture, controlled release systems, etc. is discussed.

The thermomechanical and surface chemical properties of nanocomposite of poly( D, L-actic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) were improved significant due to concentration of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets as nanoscale fillers to PLGA film. Thermomechanical properties of the PLGA/GO (2wt.-%.) nanocomposite were decreased crystallization and melting temperature, weight loss. The storage and loss moduli of the nanocomposite were enhanced by chemical bonding between the oxygenated functional groups of the GO nanosheets and the polymer chains in the PLGA matrix. Enhanced hydrophilicity of nanocomposite caused by embedded GO nanosheets also improved for good biocompatibility. Our findings indicate that thermomechanical properties and biocompatibility of nanocomposite embedded with GO nanosheets are attractive candidates for use in biomedical applications such as scaffolds.
The combination of cobalt ferrite and natural rubber has a potential to enhance the functional properties of rubber ferrite composites available on the market. In this study, cobalt ferrite was synthesized by the sol-gel method with tapioca starch as a cheating agent and then incorporated into natural rubber using an internal mixer. The curing characteristics, magnetic hysteresis, complex permeability, and permittivity of the rubber ferrite composites were studied as a function of the loading from 0 to 25 phr. The cure time and scorch time tended to reduce with the addition of non-reinforced cobalt ferrite fillers. The remanent and saturation magnetizations were linearly proportional to the cobalt ferrite loading, consistent with the rule of mixture. On the other hand, the increase in cobalt ferrite loading from 5 to 25 phr slightly affected the coercive field and the complex permeability. Using the maximum loading of 25 phr, both real and imaginary parts of the permittivity were significantly raised and reduced with the frequency in the 10-300 MHz range.
This comprehensive study delves into the intricate process of exfoliating and functionalizing boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) extracted from hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), and meticulously explores their potential application within epoxy composites. The extensive research methodology encompasses a sequence of treatments involving hydrothermal and sonication processes aimed at augmenting the dispersion of BNNSs in solvents. Leveraging advanced analytical techniques such as Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and FTIR spectroscopy, the study rigorously analyzes a spectrum of changes in the BNNS's properties, including layer count variations, interlayer interactions, crystal structure modifications, and the introduction of functional groups. The research also rigorously evaluates the impact of integrating BNNSs, specifically glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)-functionalized BNNSs, on the thermal conductivity of epoxy composites. The conclusive findings exhibit notable enhancements in thermal properties, predominantly attributed to the enhanced dispersion of fillers and enhanced interactions within the epoxy matrix. This pioneering work illuminates the wide potential of functionalized BNNSs for significantly enhancing the thermal conductivity of epoxy composites, paving the way for advanced materials engineering and practical applications.
As awareness of environmental issues continues to grow, there is an escalating demand for recycling and repurposing byproducts of agricultural and food production processes and their conversion to high-value products. Coffee is the most widely consumed beverage globally; during coffee beverage processing and consumption, byproducts such as coffee silverskin (CS), spent coffee grounds (SCGs), and oil are generated. Despite containing beneficial materials such as cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, lipids, and bioactive substances, these byproducts are typically discarded in landfills or incinerated. The utilization of CS, SCGs, and oil in the development of packaging materials holds significant potentials toward the realization of a sustainable society. To this end, considerable research efforts have been dedicated to the development of high-value materials derived from coffee byproducts, including functional fillers, polymer composites, and biodegradable polymers. Notably, CS and SCGs have been employed as functional fillers in polymer composites. Additionally, lipids extracted from SCGs have been used as plasticizers for polymers and cultured with microorganisms to produce biodegradable polymers. This review focuses on the research and development of polymer/CS and polymer/SCG composites as well as cellulose extraction and utilization from CS and SCGs and its applications, oil extraction from SCGs, and cultivation with microorganisms using extracted oil for polyhydroxyalkanoates(PHA) production.
