Property of ion Exchange Resin having Tripropylamine as Functional Group for Development of Denitrogenation Process

  • Nitrate-selective ion exchange resins involving bulky trialkyl amino as functional group were synthesized by the reaction of chloromethylated polystyrene-divinylbenzene copolymer and the corresponding tripropylamine in ethanol. Fundmental properties such as bulk density, water content, effeative diameter, uniformity coefficient, appearance index, exchange capacity and particle size distribution were fully measured. The synthesized resins appeared to be good for nitrate selection.

Comparison of Pulmonary Function, Respiratory Muscle Strength, and Diaphragm Thickness between Underweight and Normal Adults

  • PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between being underweight and respiratory function indicators such as pulmonary function, respiratory muscle strength, and diaphragm thickness in normal adults without lung disease. METHODS: The participants in this experiment were thirty young adults. To compare the respiratory function between the underweight and normal weight individuals, 15 participants were selected from each of the underweight and normal weight groups based on body mass index. Respiratory function tests were conducted through pulmonary function tests and respiratory muscle strength tests. Diaphragm thickness was measure with ultrasonography, and physical characteristics were obtained from grip strength and waist circumference. An independent t-test was used to compare the averages of the parameters measured in the two groups. RESULTS: In the respiratory function tests between the two groups, statistically significant differences (p < .05) emerged in the ratio of the predicted forced vital capacity (%FVC), the ratio of the predicted forced expiratory volume in one second (%FEV1), maximal expiratory pressure (MEP), and diaphragm thickness at the functional residual capacity (FRC). There was no statistically significant difference in the forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in one second, maximal inspiratory pressure, diaphragm thickness at the total lung capacity, and thickening ratio (p > .05). CONCLUSION: Decreases in some variables of respiratory function, such as the %FVC, %FEV1, MEP, and diaphragm thickness at the FRC were observed in underweight subjects. However, it is difficult to determine whether it affected the overall respiratory function. Future studies are needed to clearly identify the relationship between being underweight and respiratory function.

Classification of Metro Station Areas Using Multi-Source Big Data: Case Studies in Beijing

  • Large-capacity public transportation systems, represented by urban metro lines, are the key to alleviating the significant increase in urbanization and motorization in China. But to improve the agglomeration effect of metro stations in a more accurate and targeted way requires scientific evaluation and classification of the surrounding areas of metro stations. As spatial and functional design are the core factors for urban renewal design, this study took Beijing as an example, using multi-source data to evaluate the morphology and functional composition surrounding areas of metro stations, and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) matrix was used to classify and characterize each type of surrounding areas from morphological-functional dimensions. It shows a negative correlation of the mix-use index with the floor area ratio, and only about 20% of the areas achieve the ideal situation of high construction intensity with high mix-use diversity. Hoping to provide a reference for city managers and designers in dealing with the surrounding metro stations with different construction intensities in a more precise way.

토양 미생물 다양성 지표를 이용한 토착 미생물 군집의 호기성 가솔린 오염분해능력 평가 기법 개발 연구 (A Novel Method to Assess the Aerobic Gasoline Degradation by Indigenous Soil Microbial Community using Microbial Diversity Information)

  • 유류오염은 우리나라의 대표적인 토양 비점오염원으로 알려져 있으며, 이를 정화하는 토양의 능력은 토양 자원의 기능적 가치 평가에서 매우 유의하다. 특히 절/성토 설계 등의 친환경 건설기술 측면에서 토양의 유류오염정화능력을 평가하는 것은 중요하다. 그러나 마이크로코즘 실험을 포함한 기존의 토양 유류 오염정화능력 평가기법은 경제적, 시간적인 제약이 많아 광범위한 지역에 적용하기 어렵다. 이에 본 연구에서는 유류 오염물질 중 가솔린의 대표적 오염물질인 톨루엔을 선정하여 쉽고 간편하게 측정할 수 있는 토양의 미생물 다양성 지표를 이용, 토양의 유류오염 정화능력을 평가하는 기법을 제시하였다. 연구를 통해 미생물 군집의 다양성 지표 중 Shannon index가 토양의 정화능력 인자인 Specific Degradation Rate ($V_{max}$)와 상관성 관계가 있음을 보였고, 두 인자 간의 상관식을 도출할 수 있었다. 또한 본 상관식을 Michaelis-Menten kinetics에 적용하여 미생물 다양성 인자만으로 토양의 톨루엔 정화능력을 평가할 수 있는 기법을 제시하였다. 본 기법을 통해 간단히 토양의 톨루엔 정화능력을 평가할 수 있으며, 친환경 건설기술분야와 같은 다양한 공학적 분야에 광범위하게 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

Comparison of Antioxidant Activities in Tomato Leaves and Stems

  • This study was conducted to investigate the antioxidant activity in the leaves and stems of 50 tomato accessions, in order to examine the possibility of using tomato by-products as a functional material. The extracts of the leaves (LE) and stems (SE) were analyzed for DPPH, ABTS, and total polyphenol content (TPC). Antioxidant activities and TPC differed significantly between the LE and SE of the 50 tomato accessions. TPC in LE and SE showed wide variation, ranging from 24.4 to 60.6 and 12.5 to 18.8 mg GAE/g, respectively. The DPPH and ABTS antioxidant activities of LE ranged from 10.0 to 38.2% (scavenging effect) and 20.8 to 59.0 mg ASC/g, respectively, while the DPPH and ABTS measurements of SE were 1.4 to 8.8% and 2.2 to 22.5 mg ASC/g, respectively. As assessed by the relative antioxidant capacity index (RACI), IT033117 and IT203466 had the highest antioxidant activity in LE and SE, respectively. These results will expand the knowledge of antioxidant activity and provide information on tomato accessions valuable for the development of functional foods and food additives.

허리둘레변화 감지의 실시간 되먹임을 통한 의도적인 복근수축이 요추관 협착증 환자의 골반경사와 기능적 능력 그리고 신경근 조절에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Intentional Abdominal Muscle Contraction Through Real-Time Feedback on Sensed Changes in Waist Circumference on Pain, Functional Capacity and Neuromuscular Control in Adults With Lumbar Spinal Stenosis)

  • Background: The continuous co-contraction of the trunk muscles through trunk stabilization exercises is important to patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). However, intentional abdominal muscle contraction (IAMC) for trunk stabilization has been used only for specific training in the treatment room. Objects: The purpose of this study was to provide feedback to adults with LSS to enable IAMC during activities of daily living (ADLs). Methods: The participants with spinal stenosis were divided into an experimental group of 15 adults and a control group of 16 adults. Electromyographic signals were measured while the subjects kept their both hands held up at $90^{\circ}$. The measured muscles were the rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique (EO), internal oblique (IO), and erector spinae (ES). Pelvic tilt was measured using a digital pelvic inclinometer. The degree of pain was measured using the visual analogue scale (VAS) and functional capacity was measured using the Korean version of the Oswestry disability index (KODI). Results: While the experimental group showed statistically significantly higher activities in the RA, EO, and IO after the intervention compared with the control group. Pelvic tilt was significantly decreased only in the experimental group. Both the experimental and control groups exhibited statistically significant declines in the VAS and KODI (p<.01). In terms of the levels of changes, the experimental group exhibited a statistically significant larger decline only in the VAS and the pelvic tilt when compared with the control group (p<.05). Conclusions: The subjects could stabilize their trunks, and relieve their pain and dysfunctions and reduce pelvic tilt by learning abdominal muscle contraction during ADLs. The combination of therapeutic exercises and IAMC may have greater effects on patients with LSS.

어류 알로부터 알칼리 가용화공정을 통해 회수한 Collagenous Protein 획분의 식품 기능특성 (Food Functionality of Collagenous Protein Fractions Recovered from Fish Roe by Alkaline Solubilization)

  • This study investigated the potential of collagenous protein fractions (CPFs) as functional foods. The specific CPFs studied were recovered from the roe of bastard halibut (BH), Paralichthys olivaceus; skipjack tuna (ST), Katsuwonus pelamis; and yellowfin tuna (YT), Thunnus albacares through the alkaline solubilization process at pH 11 and 12. The buffer capacity, water-holding capacity and solubility of CPFs with pH-shift treatment were significantly better at alkaline pH (10-12) than at acidic pH (2.0). At pH-shift treatment (pH 2 and 12), the foaming capacities of CPFs from ST and YT were improved compared to those of controls, but they were unstable compared to BH CPFs. The emulsifying activity index (EAI, $m^2/g$ protein) of CPFs (controls) was 16.0-21.1 for BH, 20.1-23.9 for ST and 9.3-13.7 for YT (P<0.05). CPFs adjusted to pH 12 showed improved EAI and YT CPFs showed significantly greater emulsifying ability than those from BH and ST. CPFs recovered from fish roe are not only protein sources but also have a wide range of food functionalities, confirming the high availability of fish sausage and surimi-based products as protein or reinforcing materials for functional foods and alternative raw materials.

넙치(Paralichthys olivaceus) 알로부터 등전점 가용화/침전공정으로 회수한 분리단백질의 식품기능성에 미치는 pH-shift의 영향 (Influence of pH-shift on Food Functionality of Protein Isolates Recovered by Isoelectric Solubilization and Precipitation from Olive Flounder Paralichthys olivaceus Roes)

  • We investigated the functional properties and in vitro bioactivity of protein isolates (RPIs) recovered from olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus roes by isoelectric solubilization/precipitation process, according to pH-shift treatments. The buffer capacity of RPIs was shown to be stronger in alkaline pH than in acidic pH. Water holding capacity of RPIs was in range of 4.5-5.2 g/g protein with no significant differences (P>0.05). The foaming capacity and emulsifying activity index of RPIs did not show any significant differences between RPI-1 (pH 11/4.5) and 3 (pH 12/4.5), however they were superior to RPI-2 (pH 11/5.5) and 4 (pH 12/5.5). The 2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzo-thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid radical scavenging activity of RPI-3 (2.5 mg protein/mL) was 102.4 ㎍/mL, and the angiotensin I converting enzyme inhibitory activity was 30.8%. Among the RPIs, RPI-3 was relatively superior in protein functional properties such as buffer capacity, foaming capacity, emulsification, and anti-oxidative activity. Therefore, we suggest that RPI prepared from olive flounder roes could serve as a potential food resource.

Associations among Physical Activity, Comorbidity, Functional Capacity, Peripheral Muscle Strength and Depression in Breast Cancer Survivors

  • Physical inactivity may an important outcome in the prognosis of breast cancer. Physical activity levels decrease significantly for breast cancer patients following the treatment and remain low after oncology treatment is completed. The aim of this study was to determine physical activity levels and to examine associations among physical activity, comorbidity, functional capacity, peripheral muscle strength, and psychosocial status in breast cancer patients. Forty breast cancer survivors were included in this study. Demographic and clinical characteristics were recorded. Physical activity was assessed with a short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). We defined comorbid diseases according to the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI). Functional capacity was evaluated with a six-minute walk test (6MWT). Peripheral muscle strength was measured for quadriceps femoris muscle with a hand-held dynamometer. Psychosocial status was measured with the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS). Forty percent of patients were inactive. The IPAQ total score was significantly related with quadriceps muscle strength (r=0.492; p<0.001) and HADS depression score (r=0.341; p<0.05). Marked correlations were also observed between IPAQ walking score and quadriceps muscle strength (r=0.449; p<0.001), HADS depression score (r=0.341; p<0.05), and CCI (r=-0.433; p<0.001). The CCI score was also markedly associated with quadriceps muscle strength (r=-0.413; p<0.001). 6MWT distance was not significantly correlated with any of the parameters. Regression analyses revealed that psychosocial status and peripheral muscle strength were significant predictors of physical activity estimated with the IPAQ short form and when combined, they explained 35% of the variance. Comorbidities, peripheral muscle strength and psychosocial status partially explain the variability of physical activity level in breast cancer survivors. These results suggest that physical inactivity contributes to worsening health in breast cancer survivors.

노인의 구강보건행태와 행복지수와의 관련성 (Relationship between Oral Health Behavior and Happiness Index in Elderly People)

  • 본 연구는 65세 이상의 노인을 대상으로 구강보건행태와 주관적인 행복지수들(OHIP-14, 행복지수)의 관련성을 파악하여 주관적 행복지수를 향상시킬 수 있는 근거를 제시하고자 하였다. 2016년 6월 17일부터 6월 30일까지 전북지역에 거주하는 65세 이상 노인 260명을 대상으로 설문조사하였으며, 일반적 특성 따른 행복지수는 연령이 낮고, 배우자가 있는 경우와 교육수준이 높을수록 행복지수가 유의하게 높게 나타났다(p<0.05). 구강보건행태에 따른 행복지수는 칫솔질 횟수가 많고, 치과 정기검진을 하는 경우에서 행복지수가 유의하게 높게 나타났다(p<0.05). 연구대상자의 구강건강과 관련된 삶의 질의 하위개념 중 기능장애는 성별, 연령, 배우자 유무, 세치제사용 여부에 따라 유의한 차이가 있었고(p<0.05), 신체적 통증에서는 배우자 유무, 교육수준, 월 평균용돈, 정기검진에 따라 유의한 차이가 있었으며(p<0.05), 정신적 불편감은 성별, 칫솔질 횟수, 정기검진에 의해 유의한 차이를 보였다(p<0.05). 그리고 신체적 능력 저하는 성별, 연령, 교육수준, 월 평균용돈에 따라 유의한 차이가 있었으며(p<0.05), 정신적 능력 저하는 연령, 동거인 유무, 배우자 유무, 정기검진에 따라 유의한 차이를 나타났다(p<0.05). 또한 연구대상자의 행복지수에 영향을 미치는 요인은 연령, 동거인 유무, 교육수준, 월 평균용돈, OHIP-14로 나타났다(p<0.05). 이상의 결과로 보아 노인들의 구강보건행태는 구강건강관련 삶의 질과 관련이 있고, 구강관련 삶의 질은 행복지수에 영향을 미치는 것으로 파악된다. 이를 바탕으로 노인의 삶의 질 및 행복지수를 높이는 데 필요한 다양한 노인구강향상프로그램 개발 등의 여러 사회적 방안이 요구된다.
