  • Purpose: Caffeine is the most widely consumed psychostimulant. It is often adopted as a tool to modulate brain activations in fMRI studies. However, its pharmaceutical effect on task-induced deactivation has not been fully examined in fMRI. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effect of caffeine on both activation and deactivation under sustained attention. Materials and Methods: Task fMRI was acquired from 26 caffeine naive healthy volunteers before and after taking caffeine pill (200 mg). Results: Statistical analysis showed an increase in cognition-load dependent task activation but a decrease in load dependent de-activation after caffeine ingestion. Increase of attention and memory task activation and its load-dependence suggest a beneficial effect of caffeine on the brain even though it has no overt behavior improvement. The reduction of deactivation by caffeine and its load-dependence indicate reduced facilitation from task-negative networks. Conclusion: Caffeine affects brain activity in a load-dependent manner accompanied by a disassociation between task-positive network and task-negative network.

  • Objective: For localization of the motor cortex, seed-based resting-state functional MRI (rsfMRI) uses the contralateral motor cortex as a seed. However, research has shown that the location of the motor cortex could differ according to anatomical variations. The purpose of this study was to compare the results of rsfMRI using two seeds: a template seed (the anatomically expected location of the contralateral motor cortex) and a functional seed (the actual location of the contralateral motor cortex determined by task-based functional MRI [tbfMRI]). Materials and Methods: Eight patients (4 with glioma, 3 with meningioma, and 1 with arteriovenous malformation) and 9 healthy volunteers participated. For the patients, tbfMRI was performed unilaterally to activate the healthy contralateral motor cortex. The affected ipsilateral motor cortices were mapped with rsfMRI using seed-based and independent component analysis (ICA). In the healthy volunteer group, both motor cortices were mapped with both-hands tbfMRI and rsfMRI. We compared the results between template and functional seeds, and between the seed-based analysis and ICA with visual and quantitative analysis. Results: For the visual analysis, the functional seed showed significantly higher scores compared to the template seed in both the patients (p = 0.002) and healthy volunteers (p < 0.001). Although no significant difference was observed between the functional seed and ICA, the ICA results showed significantly higher scores than the template seed in both the patients (p = 0.01) and healthy volunteers (p = 0.005). In the quantitative analysis, the functional seed exhibited greater similarity to tbfMRI than the template seed and ICA. Conclusion: Using the contralateral motor cortex determined by tbfMRI as a seed could enhance visual delineation of the motor cortex in seed-based rsfMRI.

  • In this paper, a practical method to generate task strategies applicable to charmfulness and high-precision assembly, is proposed. The difficulties in devising reliable assembly strategies result form various forms of uncertainty such as imperfect knowledge on the parts being assembled and functional limitations of the assembly devices. In approach to cope with these problems, the robot is provided with the capability of learning the corrective motion in response to the force signal through iterative task execution. The strategy is realized by adopting a learning algorithm and represented in a binary tree type database. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, a series of simulations and experiments are carried out under assimilated real production environments. The results show that the sensory signal-to-robot action mapping can be acquired effectively and, consequently, the assembly task can be performed successfully.

  • The present study attempted to observe what changes the supply of highly concentrated(30%) oxygen cause to people's ability and cerebrum lateralization of verbal cognition, compared to air of normal oxygen concentration(21%). The experiment consisted of two runs, one for verbal cognition test with normal air(21% of oxygen) and for verbal cognition test with more oxygen in the air(30% of oxygen). Functional brain images were taken form 3T MRI using the single-shot EPI method. There were more activations observed at the occipital, parietal, temporal, and frontal lobes, but there were no changes in cerebrum lateralization with 30% oxygen administration. The result of task performance showed the accuracy increased at 30%'s concentration of oxygen rather than 21%'s. It is concluded that the positive effect on the verbal cognitive performance level by the highly concentrated oxygen administration was due to changeless increase of left and right cerebrum activation.

  • This paper designs, in the teleoperation task, the world coordinate system by the functional analysis of each of the robot joint so that the human operator performs easily the task. Also, it constructs the heuristic rules of the equal motion line coordinates for the position and the posture control of the robot within the knowledge base so that the robot hand reaches-possibly in any position of the robot's work space. As shown in the result of the experiments. the coordinate reading is easy because the work station is displayed to the high resolution by using the superimposer of the motion analysing computer system. Also. the task burden of the human operator reduces and the error recovery time reduces because the coordinates of the object is obtained just by touch using the digitizer.

  • Purpose : This study was assessed muscle activity and onset time in trunk and upper extremity on functional reaching. Methods : The participant was 18 female(young 10, old 8). As functional reaching, we collection data by using EMG(MP150) on transverse abdominis, external oblique, erector spinae, deltoid middle and serratus anterior. Results : 1) In functional reaching, transverse abdominis, external oblique, erector spinae and deltoid middle muscle activity was augmented on old female(p>.05). Serratus anterior was augmented on young female(p>.05). 2) In functional reaching, transverse abdominis and erector spinae muscle onset time is significantly faster old female than young female(p<.05). External oblique and serratus anterior muscle onset time is faster old female than young female(p>.05). 3) As increase of age muscle activity of external oblique was more increased that we found .511 a coefficient correlation and onset time more faster on transverse abdominis and erector spinae were each -.492 and -.554 coefficient correlation. Conclusion : The muscle activity and onset time was difference in functional reaching according to ageing and task context. It is necessary concentration and attention to old female than young female. Therefore, these results suggest that importance of anticipatory postural control and selective strategy of postural control.

  • Objective: The focus of this study is brain plasticity associated with semantic aspects of language function in patients with medial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE) Methods: Using longitudinal functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), patterns of brain activation were observed in twelve left and seven right unilateral mTLE patients during a word-generation task relative to a pseudo-word reading task before and after anterior temporal section surgery. Results: No differences were observed in precentral activations in patients relative to normal controls (n = 12), and surgery did not alter the phonological-associated activations. The two mTLE patient groups showed left inferior prefrontal activations associated with semantic processing (word-generation>pseudo-word reading), as did control subjects. The amount of semantic-associated activation in the left inferior prefrontal region was negatively correlated with epilepsy duration in both patient groups. Following temporal resection, semantic-specific activations in inferior prefrontal region became more bilateral in left mTLE patients, but more left-lateralized in right mTLE patients. The longer the duration of epilepsy in the patients, the larger the increase in the left inferior prefrontal semantic-associated activation after surgery in both patient groups. Semantic activation of the intact hippocampus, which had been negatively correlated with seizure frequency, normalized after the epileptic side was removed. Conclusion: These results indicate alternation of semantic language network related to recruitment of left inferior prefrontal cortex and functional recovery of the hippocampus contralateral to the epileptogenic side, suggesting an intra- and inter-hemispheric reorganization following surgery.

  • Objective: In the present study, the effects of visual restriction and unstable base dual-task training (VUDT), stable base dual-task training (SDT), and on stroke patients' balance and concentration abilities were examined. Design: Two-group pretest-posttest design. Methods: Dual-task training was conducted for thirty persons with chronic stroke who were hospitalized or receiving physical therapy and were randomly assigned to either the VUDT group (n=15) or the SDT group (n=15). The subjects were divided into two groups of 15 participants each, the VUDT group and the SDT group. Dual-task training was administered for 30 minutes per session, three times a week for 8 weeks. The participants' balance was measured via the center of pressure migration distances, functional reach test (FRT), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and attention was measured using the trail-making test and the Stroop test. Results: In comparisons within each group, the two groups showed significant differences before and after the training (p<0.05). In the comparisons between the groups, the VUDT group showed significant improvements in center of pressure (COP), FRT, and BBS, and TMT compared to the SDT group (p<0.05). Conclusions: It would be more effective to conduct dual-task training as a rehabilitation training program under vision restriction and unstable supporting surface conditions than to conduct the test under unstable supporting plane conditions to improve balance and attention in chronic stroke patients.
