In an effort to obtain preventive, diagnostic and therpeutic medical and exercise training information of rheumatoid arthritis as well as to provide pertinent data to be used in development of exercise program for the management of rheumatoid arthritis, this study was conducted by using literature review. Because RA is a disease that involves both joints and muscles, its activity in the different functional classes influences the patient's ability to exercise. A patient in Functional Class 1 may perform any type of exercise because the disease involvement has not yet reached major importance. Exceptions may include hard physical exercise, running, and individual racket sports. In almost all cases, bicycle exercise is possible. Patients in Functional Class 2 and a few in Class 3 can perform most types of exercise (especially cycling, walking, heated pool exercise and even jogging) in low activity phases of RA. Although a few patients in Functional Class 3 can walk, jog, and perform similar types of exercise, most persons in this class can swim or exercise on a bicycle if the type of exercise, its intensity, and its range of motion are modified according to the patient's anatomic and pathologic conditions. Most patients in Functional Class 4 are not able to carry out complicated movements. We conclude that physical training for persons with RA has physical, psychological, and social consequences that are clearly beneficial. We recommend training be one part of the many involved in the complicated treatment of RA.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of functional strengthening exercise on static and dynamic standing balance in a child with cerebral palsy. The subject was a 7 year old boy with diplegia whose Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM) score was 80% along with G1 of the lower extremities in Modified Ashworth Scale. The subject was ambulatory with some degree of limitation and demonstrated muscle weakness and strength asymmetry in the lower extremities. A changing criterion design for a single-subject research was used for this study. The functional strengthening exercise consisted of lower extremity ergometer exercise and knee exercise with grading movement in standing position, each for 20 minutes, which lasted 18 sessions for 6 weeks. A knee extensor strength test on both extremities and standing balance test were conducted after each functional strengthening exercise. Two types of standing balance were tested: one leg stance test and functional reach test. One leg stance test was to evaluate static standing balance, and functional reach test was to evaluate dynamic standing balance. The results showed that the functional strengthening exercise had some positive effects on improvement of both static and dynamic standing balance, and there was a positive correlation between the knee strength and standing balance.
Understanding awareness and wearing behavior of functional textiles for silver generation is expected to contribute to clothing products development to improve and maintain their health and marketing strategy fit for user characteristics. For empirical research, a survey was developed and the aged 50 and above were 332 respondents. The results of the study are as follows. First, the level of awareness for both comfort-oriented and health/safetyoriented functional fabrics in high health-conscious group was much higher than that in low health-conscious group. In number of wearing times, health body and high-conscious group wear comfort-oriented fabrics more frequently, while weak body group wear health/safety-oriented fabrics more often. The health-consciousness significantly influenced the possession of active sportswear with various functions. Second, the awareness of functional fabrics in exercise activities groups was much higher than that in exercise-conscious groups. High exercise activities group know more about the wet sensation-related fabrics and clothing materials for outdoor activities. Low exercise-conscious group put on health/comfort-oriented fabrics for casuals more frequent than functional fabrics for sportswear. High exercise activities group preferred to wear sportswear suitable for outdoor activities. The aged people have a lot of health/comfort-oriented functional casual wear appropriate for indoor activities regardless of exercise-consciousness. However, the more they enjoy exercise activities the more they are interested in functional sportswear. Even though they were unconcerned with exercise, older people are interested in functional casual clothes. As a conclusion, the high interest in health and exuberant activities in silver generation arose the necessity of new multi-functional clothing products.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a functional movement correction exercise on the functional movement screen scores of badminton players. Methods: The participants consisted of 25 badminton players who were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 13) or a control group (n = 12); they engaged in exercise three times per week for eight weeks. The experimental group engaged in the functional movement correction exercise, while the control group engaged in general exercise. An FMS kit (USA) was used to measure the following: FMS score, deep squat, hurdle step, in-line lunge, shoulder mobility, active straight leg raise, trunk stability push up, and rotary stability. Results: The FMS score, deep squat, hurdle step, in-line lunge, shoulder mobility, active straight leg raise, and trunk stability push up, and rotary stability showed significant improvement in the experimental group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The experiment confirmed that the functional movement screen scores of badminton players improve with effective exercise interventions.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of group exercise, manual therapy, and a home exercise program on VAS (visual analogue scale), ROM (range of motion) of shoulder, and functional outcome in adhesive capsulitis. Methods: The study was conducted with 45 patients. All subjects were randomly assigned to 3 groups: group exercise (n=15), manual therapy (n=15), home exercise (n=15). The subjects performed an intervention program 3 times a week for 4 weeks a total of 12 times. Outcome measurements were VAS, ROM, and Constant-Murley score outcome measures. Measurements were taken four times, at baseline, 4 weeks later, 8 weeks later, and 12 weeks later. Results: VAS, ROM of the shoulder, and functional outcomes showed improvement in all groups at the final follow-up (p<0.05). VAS and ROM showed greater improvement with group exercise and manual therapy than home exercise, however, there were no significant differences between the two groups (p>0.05). Functional outcomes showed the greatest improvement in group exercise at the final follow-up. This improvement was greater than with manual therapy or home exercise (p<0.05). Conclusion: Group exercise and manual therapy were more effective for improving pain, ROM, and function than home exercise in adhesive capsulitis. In particular, group exercise is more effective in functional recovery than other physiotherapy interventions.
The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of rehabilitation exercise and neuromuscular electrical stimulation on a visual analysis scale and functional visual analysis scale regarding functional capacity. A total of 7 consecutive patients with the complaint of patellofemoral pain syndrome who received this diagnosis from a sports medicine physician were recruited to assess the effect of rehabilitation exercise and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Functional Visual Analog Scale (FVAS), functional capacity patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome. The exercise rehabilitation consisted of a complex training program requiring five treatments a week for eight weeks. The training program consisted of four phases, and each lasted for two weeks. Statistical analyses were one-way ANOVA with repeated measures. The results were as follows: (1) There were significant differences in the VAS and FVAS during 8-weeks of rehabilitation exercise and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (p<.01). (2) There were no significant differences in the functional capacity during 8-weeks of rehabilitation exercise and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (p<.05). In conclusion, at the end of the eight weeks of this rehabilitation program and neuromuscular electrical stimulation, a significant reduction was found in VAS and FVAS, but there was no significant difference in functional capacity at the end of the treatment.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of aquatic exercise on the functional activities of patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. METHODS: This study was a single-group experimental ABA design in three children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The study period was 20 weeks, consisting of 4 weeks of baseline, 12 weeks of intervention, and 4 weeks of maintenance, with 40 minutes of aquatic exercise once a week in the intervention. The Duchenne muscular dystrophy upper extremity patient-reported outcome scale and the expanded version of the Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale version of the Hammersmith Functional Movement Scale were used to determine the effects of aquatic exercise on the patient's functional activity. The measurements were taken five times: once at baseline, three times at intervention, and once at maintenance. The data collected in this study were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0, with a statistical significance level of α of .05, and the Friedman test, a non-parametric method was conducted. RESULTS: The functional activity scores improved significantly after 12 weeks of the intervention compared to the baseline and were maintained for up to 4 weeks after the intervention was complete. CONCLUSION: Aquatic exercise is an effective intervention for improving the functional activity of children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and should be utilized in clinical practice.
Objective: Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common upper extremity compressive nerve disorders in modern people. Various conservative treatments such as taping, exercise, and electrotherapy have been applied to carpal tunnel syndrome and their effectiveness has been proven. This study aims to determine whether home exercise combined with taping is effective for pain and functional disability in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. Design: Randomized controlled study Methods: 21 patients were recruited and were randomly divided into HEx+T (Home exercise+taping) group (n=10) and HEx (Home exercise) group (n=11). All participants performed Home exercise(tendon and neural gliding exercise) 5 times a week for 6 weeks. Additionally, subject in the HEx group, taping was applied over the wrist and forearm during the training period. Wrist pain was measured by VAS (Visual Analogue Scale). Functional disability was measured using a BCTSQ(The Boston Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questionnaire). Results: Both the HEx+T group and the HEx group showed a significant improvement in wrist pain(p<0.05), and the HEx+T group showed a more significant decrease in pain than the HEx group(p<0.05). There was a significant improvement in both groups in functional disability (p<0.05), and the HEX+T group showed more improvement than the HEX group(p<0.05). Conclusions: This study suggests that home exercise combined with taping is effective for pain and functional disability in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome.
