While there exists a relatively large body of technical information for the engineered design of wood-frame buildings to resist seismic ground motions, the quantitative assessment of seismic resistance of conventional houses built by prescriptive requirements is less well understood. Forintek Canada Corp., in collaboration with other research and industry partners, has embarked on a research project to address this topic. This paper will report on the seismic shake table tests of a full-scale wood-frame building. The two-story specimen, $6m{\times}6m$ in plan, was built on the seismic shake table at Tongji University in Shanghai, China, according to Part 9 of the 1995 National Building Code of Canada and shaken uni-directionally in each of the two principal directions. Three different seismic table motions were applied at increasing peak ground motion amplitudes up to 0.40 and 0.50 g. The specimen was repaired after the above sets of seismic table motions, and successive runs were conducted for increased door openings. Measurements included specimen accelerations, displacements and anchorage forces. Static stiffness of the specimen was measured at low force levels, and natural frequencies were measured after each seismic loading stage by applying low-level random excitation. The results presented consist of the capacity spectra of the shake table tests, changes in specimen stiffness and natural frequencies with increasing seismic loading. These results and those from other recent shake table tests elsewhere will be compared with simplified engineering calculations based on codified values of strength, and on that basis preliminary conclusions will be drawn on the adequacy of the current code provisions and design guides in Canada and the USA for conventional wood-frame construction.

This paper persents the flexural behavior of high performance concrete beams having different concrete filling conditions. Three tests were conducted on full-scale beam specimens with design concrete compressive strength of 400 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. Different concrete filling conditions were intentionally made such that the first beam specimen was soundly cast to obtain the perfect concrete filling condition. Second beam specimen was cast in such a way that up to the longitudinal tensile reinforcement from the top, good concrete was filled while poor concrete was poured for the bottom part to simulate the poor workamanship, workability and unsatisfactory compaction. Third beam specimens was cast in such a way that up to the neutral axis of the beam section from the top, good concrete was filled while so did for the bottom part as the second beam specimen. The test results were analyzed in terms of load-displacement response, formation of crack, crack width, crack spacing and shift of neutral axis. An evaluation of the ductile response fo three different beam specimens was made in combination with the ultimate load accoding to the three different concrete filling conditions.

One of the most important design procedures for large sized structures is the evaluation of fracture strength against fatigue and brittle fractures threatening to occur in their steel members. In this paper, the safety assessment based upon the knowledge about the fracturing characteristics of such ship structures was discussed, which can be estimated from such phenomena as fatigue crack propagation and brittle fractures, as obtained by employing fracture mechanics at the basic design stage. Model tests with a partial structure specimen of full size was carried out to authenticate a question as to whether or not the fracturing characteristics of such sophisticated structures could be estimated with precision from ordinary scale specimen tests, It was shown that the behviour of fatigue crack growth of large sized structures in this study could be predicted from the results of ordinary scale specimen test.
The texture evolution during deep drawing of AA1050 sheets was experimentally investigated and the lattice rotation rate was predicted using rate sensitive model with full constraints boundary conditions. The measured textures are dependent on the amount of the flange deformation and the initial crystal orientations. In the specimen parallel to RD the initial crystal orientations and the D component rotated toward the Cu component and the initial crystal orientations along the $\alpha$ fiber rotated toward the G {1 1 0}<0 0 1> and P {1 1 0} <1 1 1> components during deep drawing. In the specimen parallel to $45{\circ}$ with respect to RD the initial crystal orientations around the D component rotated about ND and the initial crystal orientations along the ${\alpha}$ fiber also rotated toward the (1 1 0) [2 3] and (1 1 0)[2 7] components about ND. In the specimen parallel to TD. the initial crystal orientations around the D component rotated toward the rotated cube and the initial crystal orientations along the ${\alpha}$ fiber rotated toward the {1 1 0} <1 1 3> component.

Digital image correlation (DIC) is now a popular and extensively used full-field metrology technique. In general, DIC is performed by using a turnkey solution offered by various manufacturers of DIC. In this paper, a simple and economical set-up for DIC is proposed which uses easily accessible digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera rather than industrial couple-charged device (CCD) cameras. The paper gives a description of aspects of carrying a DIC experiment which includes experimental set-up, specimen preparation, image acquisition and analysis. The details provided here will be helpful to carry DIC experiments without specialized DIC testing rig. To validate the responses obtained from proposed DIC set-up, tension and fatigue tests on specimens made of IS 2062 Gr. E300 steel are determined. Tensile parameters for a flat specimen and stress intensity factor for an eccentrically-loaded single edge notch tension specimen are evaluated from results of DIC experiment. Results obtained from proposed DIC experiments are compared with those obtained from conventional methods and are found to be in close agreement. It is also noted that the high resolution of DSLR allows the use of proposed approach for fracture characterization which could not be carried out with a typical turnkey DIC solution employing a camera of 2MP resolution.
An external prestressed steel-bar truss unit was developed as a new strengthening technology to enhance the seismic performance of an in-plane masonry wall structure while taking advantage of the benefits of a prestressed system. The presented method consists of six steel bars: two prestressed vertical bars to introduce a prestressing force on the masonry wall, two diagonal bars to resist shear deformation, and two horizontal bars to maintain the configuration. To evaluate the effects of this new technique, four full-scale specimens, including a control specimen, were tested under combined loadings that included constant-gravity axial loads and cyclic lateral loads. The experimental results were analyzed in terms of the shear strength, initial stiffness, dissipated energy, and strain history. The efficiency of the external prestressed steel-bar truss unit was validated. In particular, a retrofitted specimen with an axial load level of 0.024 exhibited a more stable post behavior and higher energy dissipation than a control specimen with an observed complete sliding failure. The four vertical bars of the adjacent retrofitting units created a virtual column, and their strain values did not change until they reached the peak shear strength. The shear capacity of the masonry wall structure with external prestressed steel-bar truss units could be predicted using the model suggested by Yang et al.
The use of the epoxy pressure injection technique to rehabilitate reinforced concrete beam-column joints damaged by strong earthquakes is investigated experimentally and analytically. Two one-half-scale exterior beam-column joint specimens were exposed to reverse cyclic loading similar to that generated from strong earthquake ground motion, resulting in damage. Both specimens were typical of new structures and incorporated full seismic details in current building codes. Thus the first specimen was designed according to Eurocode 2 and Eurocode 8 and the second specimen was designed according to ACI-318 (1995) and ACI-ASCE Committee 352 (1985). The specimens were then repaired with an epoxy pressure injection technique. The repaired specimens were subjected to the same displacement history as that imposed on the original specimens. The results indicate that the epoxy pressure injection technique was effective in restoring the strength, stiffness and energy dissipation capacity of specimens representing a modem design.

Total number of seven experimental specimens of size 4.6m$\times$2.4m are designed in full scale with due considerations given to the constructability as well as economic applications. Each specimen is made with different shapes of trusses or hooks along the interfacial surface between precast panel and topping concrete to maintain appropriate shear resistance. Structural performances in terms of strength and ductility under flexural load are examined for each specimen with different types of interfacial shear resistance reinforcements. Experimentally obtained flexural strength are also compared with those of analytical predictions. Based on experimental and analytical studies, design equations are suggested for the developed precast prestressed concrete half-slab systems.
A strut-and-tie model is introduced in this paper to predict the ultimate shear strength of non-seismically detailed columns. The validity and applicability of the proposed strut-and-tie model are evaluated by comparison with available experimental data. The model was developed based on visible crack patterns observed on the test specimens. The concrete contribution is integrated into the strut-and-tie model through a concept of equivalent transverse reinforcement. To further validate the model a full-scale non-seismically detailed reinforced concrete column was tested to investigate its seismic behavior. The specimen was tested under the combination of a constant axial load, $0.30f_c{^{\prime}}A_g$ and quasi-static cyclic loadings simulating earthquake actions. Quasi-static cyclic loadings simulating earthquake actions were applied to the specimen until it could not sustain the applied axial load. The analytical results reveal that the strut-and-tie method is capable of modeling to a satisfactory accuracy the ultimate shear strength of non-seismically detailed columns subjected to reserved cyclic loadings.
