  • This study examines modernist grid and boundary in the works of Toyo Ito - two of the most important notions characterizing the development of Toyo Ito as an iconoclast architect. Early in his career, Ito recognized modernist architecture's inherent tendencies to establish homogenous order and divide space by function was alienating people from their context. Ito identified the notions of modernist grid and boundary as the agents of Modernism which inadvertently served to impose this systematic order and severe separation. As a reaction against these tendencies, Ito sought to avoid the use of modernist grid and blur boundary in his architecture. In Ito's career spanning over four decades, he engages in an exhaustive inquiry seeking to modify these two core elements of architecture. This study investigates these two notions in Ito's works and examines the significance of the architect's exploration in the context of Japan's Modernism.

  • In this paper, a fish-drying control method is proposed, which utilizes prediction of proper change in- weight of material fish based on skilled worker's performance. The function of the proposed system is largely broken down into two procedures: The procedure before drying and the one during drying. The procedure before drying is the determination of necessary drying conditions and the required drying time. Required drying time and proper changes in weight for a specific product are obtained by using fuzzy inference and regression models. The procedure during drying is the prediction of the state of material at the end of drying, or the state of product and regulation of drying conditions to attain the prescribed goal before drying. The prediction of product is obtained by using a set of linear-differential equations obtained by the authors' previous work. Drying conditions are regulated by using fuzzy inference. A good agreement between the results of simulation and experiments is obtained, which implies the usefulness of the present control method.

  • Research and development studies in internal combustion engines are set on a turning point due to requirements mostly purify the polluted environments. Naturally, basic studies concerned about engines are objected to elucidate formation mechanism of harmful matters, such as nitric oxide $(NO_x)$ and particulate matters. And for diesel engines, phenomenon in combustion chambers are analyzed in several approach ways in order to obtain detail understandings in closed and hardly observing space. In this article. it is discussed that the formation mechanism of diesel fuel sprays, mostly non-evaporating free diesel sprays. From that it would be promoted some new innovations in internal combustion engines of next generation.

  • This paper investigates the effect of the conducted EMI Electromagnetic Interference and the switching loss which occurs from the switching devices in the switching period of the unipolar and limited unipolar switching circuits. The three main sources of conducted EMI and switching loss in the unipolar and limited unipolar switching circuit come from the switching devices, the number of switching times in the switching period and their switching waveform. In this paper, these three parameters are used to determine the conducted EMI which generated from the unipolar and limited unipolar switching circuits and to improve the limited unipolar switching circuit which uses the power MOSFET´s as the switching devices. The significant reduction of Ire conducted EMI ...

  • The effects of change in injection pressure on spray structure in high temperature and pressure field have been investigated. The analysis of liquid and vapor phases of injected fuel is important for emissions control of diesel engines. Therefore, this work examines the evaporating spray structure using a constant volume vessel. The injection pressure is selected as the experimental parameter, is changed from 22 MPa to 112 MPa using a high pressure injection system (ECD-U2). Also, we conducted simulation study by modified KIVA-II code. The results of simulation study are compared with experimental results. The images of liquid and vapor phase for free spray were simultaneously taken by exciplex fluorescence method. As experimental results, the vapor concentration of injected fuel is leaner due to the increase of atomization in the case of the high injection pressure than in that of the low injection pressure. The calculated results obtained by modified KIVA-II code show good agreements with experimental results.

  • The purpose of this study is to make clear that the relationship between the directional properties of late arriving sound and listener envelopment (LEV). Psycho-acoustical experiments are performed with an objective measure of inter-aural cross-correlation(IACC) in order In predict whether LEV is perceived equally in two kinds of sound fields with horizontal or vertical component of late arriving sound. It is found that LEV is affected by not horizontal component of late arriving sound but also vertical one.

  • Recently, the CAD/CAM system to automatically design and process are used in almost every industry world. We designed an original digitizer system to digitize a real size car drawing. We succeeded in the development of super large size Laser Digitizer System (LDS) which has input area of 2m by 6m, resolution of 0.1mm and accuracy of .+-.0.5mm. This Laser Digitizer System can use in design of cars, ships, planes and big maps. Also can use in sensing the position of nozzle head of laser processing system, and so on.

  • Genetic Algorithm (GA) is applied to obtain optimal Inspection plan for fatigue deteriorating structures. The optimization problem is defined so as to minimize inspection cost in the 1ifs-time of the structure under the constraint that the increment of failure probability in each inspection interval is maintained below a target value. Optimization parameters are the inspection timing and the inspection quality. The inspection timing is selected from the discrete intervals such as one year, two years, three years, etc. The inspection quality is selected from the followings; no inspection, normal inspection, sampling inspection or precise inspection. The applicability of the proposed GA approach is demonstrated through the numerical calculations assuming a structure consisting of four member sets. Influences of the level of target failure probability, initial defect condition and stress increase due to plate thickness reduction caused by corrosion on inspection planning are discussed.

  • Based on the success of green tea as a cancer preventive, herbal medicines are now also attracting attention as potential sources of cancer preventive agents. Using inhibition of TNF-$\alpha$ release assay, we studied Acer nikoense (Megusurino-ki in Japanese): Inhibitory potential was found in the leaf extract, and the main active constituents were identified as geraniin and corilagin. The $IC_{50}$/ values for TNF-$\alpha$ release inhibition were 43 $\mu$M for geraniin and 76 $\mu$M for corilagin, whereas that for (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)was 26 $\mu$M.(omitted)

  • In this study, a rapid compression and expansion machine(RCEM) equipped with a swirl generator was designed and developed, in order to clarify normal and abnormal combustion(knocking phenomena). This RCEM is intended to simulate combustion process in actual automotive S.I.engines, having a high reproducibility in the compression stroke. Flame propagation and autoignition processes associated with normal and abnormal combustion were captured by the high speed schlieren photography. And swirl intensity. equivalence ratio and ignition position were varied to investigate the effect of turbulence, concentration in the unburnt gas region and flame propagation length. The knock intensity, knock mass fraction and knock mass fraction after autoignition were calculated by use of history of measured cylinder pressure.
