  • The microleakage of direct-access Class 2 restorations was evaluated. Cavities were prepared at mesial and distal proximal enamel surfaces of 20 extracted human molars through buccal window. Prepared cavities were filled with Ketac-Fil, Ketac-Silver, and Fuji II LC, following manufacturer's instructions. 4 specimens of each restorations were made through sectioning 1/4 of bucco-lingual length mesio-distally after thermocycling between $5^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$ and imerging 0.5% basic-fuchsin dye solution. Leakage at both occlusal and gingival margin of each specimen was scored 0 to 3 with stereomicroscope. The results were as follows: 1. At occlusal margin, leakage in Ketac-Fil group was more than Ketac-Silver and Fuji II LC group (ANOVA p<0.05) and there was no significant difference between Ketac-Silver and Fuji II LC group(p>0.05), and at gingival margin, there was no significant difference amang materials (p>0.05). 2. Occlusal margin leaked more than gingival margin in Ketac-Silver and Fuji II LC group (t-test p<0.05). 3. Leakage was different according to bucco-lingual location in Ketac-Fil and Fuji II LC group, and lingaul specimen exhibited more leakage(ANOVA p<0.05).

  • In this research, the surface color of 'Fuji' apples and tomatoes were measured by using Sharp PD 151 semiconductor color sensors. The measurements were compared with color-difference-meter readings and with visual sensory test scores. A negative exponential function was developed which describe the relationship between the dominant wavelength of the surface color of 'Fuji' apples and the ratio of the photoelectric currents of the color sensor. Also a linear relationship was found for the surface color of tomatoes and the color sensor output. There were good correlations between the visual test scores and the color sensor output for both 'Fuji' apples and tomatoes.

  • For the measurement of the change of respiration rate caused by the gas content of storage atmosphere which furnishes important data for the interpretation of ULO storage, GC was used. It has been shown that the respiration rate and respiratory heat generation rate of Fuji apple is more than doubled in normal low temperature storage when compared with ULO storage, and that in ULO storage the respiration rate and respiratory heat generation rate directly proportional to the concentration of O2 in storage atmosphere as well as inversely proportional to that of CO2. It was possible to establish a functional formula for the respiratory heat generation rate of Fuji apple in all the storage conditions in terms of u=-0.7638+0.0003 O2-0.0007 log(CO2)+0.1369 log(Tb) concerning temperature and the concentration of O2 and CO2

  • Incidence of using esthetic composite resin in the posterior area is increasing but there were lots of inconsistent reports about their microleakage and marginal adaptation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the differences of microleakage and marginal adaptation according to restorative techniques. 30 cavities with enamel gingival margin were prepared and restored with 3 types of composite resin [Z-100($Scotchbond^{TM}$ MP), AELITEFIL ($Onestep^{TM}$), Her culite XRV(Fuji BOND LC)] in direct technique and another 30 cavities were restored with preformed CR inlays and 3 different modern resin and resin-modified GI cements (Superbond C&B, Choice, Fuji Duet). Samples were chemically stressed in 75% ethanol for 24 hours and were thermocycled (5-$55^{\circ}C$(500 times. The degree of microleakage through proximal and gingival margins was examined by 1 % MB dye and the degree of marginal adaptation by examining the margins via SEM. The following results were obtained ; 1. In direct groups, Herculite XRV [Fuji BOND LC, 35.13 (15.50) %] group showed statistically different, less microleakage than Z-100 [$Scotchbond^{TM}$ MP, 72.91 (16.91 %] group and AELITEFIL [One-step, 93.73 (13.66) %] group (p<0.05). 2. In indirect groups, the degree of microleakage in Mean(S.D.) were: Super bond C & B [39.00 (24.35) %], Choice [57.19 (33.80) %], Fuji Duet [58.22 (40.36) %]. But there was no significant difference. 3. There was no significant difference between resin cement and resin-modified GI cement. 4. There were gaps at the interface with the tooth structure, but no gap was seen at the interface with restoration in all specimens. 5. In direct groups, Herculite XRV(Fuji BOND LC) group made little gap compared with other groups, but 40-$50{\mu}m$ thickness of bonding agent, Fuji BOND LC, looked like a cement used in indirect technique. 6. All indirect groups showed a variety of cement thickness, from less than $20{\mu}m$ to over $100{\mu}m$ and that dimension of buccal/lingual margin was less than that of gingival margin.

  • Two-spotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) is one of the major pests in apple orchards. TSSM was known to show different population dynamics depending on apple cultivars. We tested the host plant preference and fitness of TSSM on the leaves of 3 apple cultivars, Fuji, Tsugaru, and Hongro. TSSM showed higher behavioral preference to Fuji than Tsugaru and Hongro, and showed a higher fecundity in Fuji. The immature development of this mite was the shortest in Fuji and longest in Hongro. Total fecundities were not significantly different among cultivars, but daily fecundity was higher and longevity was lower in Fuji. Hongro was the less preferred cultivar for TSSM, and showed the lowest fitness by life table parameters. These results could explain the possible mechanisms of differential population dynamics among apple cultivars. Further study including diverse apple cultivars currently available in Korea could help to deploy time- and cultivar- specific IPM tactics.

  • Fluoride released from dental restorative materials effectively declines the incidence and activity of dental caries and inhibits tooth demineralization. This study investigated the fluoride release and uptake characteristics of one composite resin $(Z-250^{TM})$ three glass ionomer-based restorative material ($Dyract^{(R)}$ AP, Fuji II $LC^{(R)}$, Fuji IX GP $Fast^{(R)}$) Forty discs(6mm diameter and 1mm height) were prepared for each material. Each disc was immersed in 5ml of distilled water within polyethylene vial and stored at $37^{\circ}C$. The distilled water was changed every 24 hours and the release of fluoride was measured for 31 days. At the end of this period, each specimen was subjected to one of four treatments : (A) no fluoride treatment (control), (B) application of a fluoride dentifrice (500ppm) for three minutes three times; (C) application of the 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride(APF) foam for one minute once, (D) the same regimen as (B), plus application of the APF foam for one minute once. Then, all samples were reassessed for an additional 7 days. For all samples, the greatest fluoride release was observed after the first day of the study but diminished with time. On the 7th day of the study, fluoride release level was stabilized. Fuji II $LC^{(R)}$ and Fuji IX GP $Fast^{(R)}$ released higher amount of fluoride than other materials ; however, no statistically significant difference was found from Fuji II $LC^{(R)}$ and Fuji IX GP $Fast^{(R)}$. The amount of fluoride of $Dyract^{(R)}$ AP, Fuji II $LC^{(R)}$ and Fuji IX GP $Fast^{(R)}$ was increased after fluoride treatment, and diminished with time.

  • The aim of the study is to compare the fluoride release and recharge properties of glass ionomer cements and 'alkasite'. Specimens of two glass ionomer cements (Fuji IX GP and Riva Self Cure), 'alkasite' restorative material (Cention N) and composite resin (Filtek™ Z350XT) were prepared. The fluoride release of each specimen was measured for 28 days. Thereafter, 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel was applied to experimental groups. No treatment was performed on control groups. The fluoride release was measured for additional 7 days to evaluate the fluoride recharge properties of each materials. The fluoride release was highest in Riva Self Cure, followed by Fuji IX GP, Cention N (p < 0.05). Fluoride release of Cention N was measured to be approximately 49% of Fuji IX GP's. After the application of 1.23% APF gel, increases in fluoride release were observed in Riva Self Cure, Fuji IX GP and Cention N (p < 0.05). Fluoride recharge was observed in Cention N as well as in glass ionomer cements. Further studies are required to evaluate the anti-cariogenic properties of Cention N at clinical conditions.

  • Current season's shoots on 2-year-old branches of 'Fuji' and 'Jonagold' apple trees were heading back pruned to 5 leaves from early May to mid July at about 12-day intervals. The summer heading back pruning induced regrowth on the pruned shoots with different responses between the two cultivars. Generally, greater regrowth occurred on the pruned shoots of 'Fuji' trees than on those of 'Jonagold', irrespective of the time of the heading cut. The shoots of 'Fuji' trees pruned in late May or in June exhibited greater regrowth compared with those pruned in early May or in July, whereas the summer heading back pruning in June resulted in the greatest regrowth for 'Jonagold'. The heading cut induced terminal flower bud formation on the pruned shoots, the percentage of which was higher in 'Fuji' than in 'Jonagold'. The highest percentages of terminal flower bud formation for 'Fuji' and 'Jonagold' were obtained with the heading cut in late May and in mid June, respectively. Percent flowering of the buds was similar in both cultivars, but percent fruit set was slightly higher in 'Fuji' than in 'Jonagold'. The time of the heading cut did not affect percent fruit set in both cultivars. Our results demonstrate that summer heading back pruning of current season's shoots induces regrowth and terminal flower bud formation therefrom when done at appropriate time, but the specific responses to the heading cut are cultivardependent.
