  • The optimal design and combustion analysis of the gas generator for Liquid Rocket Engine (LRE) were performed. A fuel-rich gas generator in open cycle turbopump system was designed for 10ton$_{f}$ in thrust with RP-1/Lox propellant. The optimal design was done for maximizing specific impulse of main combustion chamber with constraints of combustion temperature and power matching required by turbopump system. Design variables were selected as total mass flow rate to gas generator, O/F ratio in gas generator, turbine injection angle, partial admission ratio, and turbine rotational speed. Results of optimal design show the dimension of length, diameter, and contraction ratio of gas generator. Also, the combustion test was conducted to evaluate the performance of injector and combustion chamber. And the effect of the turbulence ring was investigated on the mixing enhancement in the chamber.r.

  • The characteristics of combustion and emissions in multi-staged oil burner have been experimentally studied for the various range of equivalence ratios, drop sizes and fuel formulations. Malvern system was used to measure droplet size of fuel. Light fuel oil and light fuel oil doped with pyridine($C_5H _5N$) were used to investigate the effects on fuel NOx emission. The emissions of NO and CO in exhaust gas and the flame temperatures were measured by the gas analyzer and thennocouples. NOx emissions were increased by increasing the excess air ratio (range:$lambda=1.1-1.4$) or decreasing the SMD of droplet in single-staged burner. In comparison with the single-staged burner, the emission of NOx in multi-staged burner was reduced by 50% but CO emission was slightly increased. It is found that multi-staged burner has a good capability in reducing thermal NOx resulting from the distributed heat release rate and lower flame temperature in fuel-rich and fuel-lean combustion zone. Moreover, the fuel NOx emission of the multi-staged burner is lower than that of single-staged burner, because multi-staged burner has fuel rich zone where fuel N is converted to $N_2$ more than NO. In 3-staged burner, the percentage of each stage combustion air have strong influence on emission characteristics. It is also found that NOx emission can be reduced by decreasing inner and outer air percentage or increasing middle air flow rate and CO emission is vice versa.

  • This paper is the second of 3 companion papers which investigate axial stratification process. In-cylinder fuel behavior has been investigated in the port injected Sl engine by visualizing for the purpose of understanding stratification. Planar laser light sheet from an Nd:YAG laser has been illuminated through the transparent quartz cylinder of the single cylinder optical engine and the Mie scattered light has been captured through the quartz window in the piston head with an ICCD camera. Fuel has been replaced with an air-ethanol mixture to utilize atomized fuel spray fur the visualization purposes. This results have been compared with steady flow concentration measurement. For low/medium swirl port, the early injection makes such a fuel distribution state that is upper-rich, middle-lean and lower-rich along the combustion chamber and cylinder by tumbling motion. On the other hand, the late injection induces upper-rich, middle-lean and lower-rich state due to the short fuel penetration.

  • The characteristics of stratified co-flow flames have been investigated from the flame chemiluminescence images. The fuel lean premixed flame could be stabilized with a fuel rich premixed flames that is generated with the supply of fuel through the inner nozzle. The penetration of outer region lean premixture into the fuel stream produced a lifted rich premixed flame at the center. Chemiluminescence images of OH, CH, and $C_2$ radicals indicated that the way of stratification of fuel/air mixture under various operating conditions.

  • The present study employs experimental approach to identify combustion stability characteristics of fuel-rich gas generators. The gas generator of interest, fueled by LOx and Jet A-1, experienced combustion instability coupled to a longitudinal resonant mode of the combustion chamber at about 1200 Hz. The occurrence of instability is strongly associated with acoustic boundary condition at the exit .and axial location of maximum heat release. As a result, stretching heat release zone in the axial direction by increase of the fuel nozzle diameter has dramatically stabilized combustion.

  • Diesel-Fueled HCCI(Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) Engine is an advanced combustion process explained as a premixed charge of diesel fuel and air is admitted into the cylinder and compression ignited. It has possibility to reduce NOx by spontaneous auto-ignition at multiple points that allows very lean combustion resulting in low combustion temperatures. Also PM could be reduced by the premixed combustion and no fuel-rich zones. But HCCI couldn't be realized because of the difficulties in vaporizing the diesel, control of combustion phase directly. To solve these problems, new fuel injection strategy, explained as the pilot fuel injection to promote ignition near TDC following the main fuel injection at the extremely advanced timing, is applied during the compression ratio is varied from 18.9:1 to 27.7:1 This is not a pilot fuel to promote the ignition but also the direct control method of the combustion phase. Experimental result shows the pilot fuel injection promote the ignition and the compression ignition of the HCCI engine is achieved as compression ratio becomes higher. Also there is an optimal pilot fuel injection timing for the HCCI combustion. NOx is reduced more than 90% compared to DI-Diesel case but PM and THC emission needs more investigation.

  • Variable valve timing is one of the attractive ways to control homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine. Hot internal residual gas which can be controlled by variable valve timing(VVT) device, makes fuel evaporated easily, and ignition timing advanced. Regular gasoline was used as main fuel and di-methyl ether(DME) was used as ignition promoter in this research. HCCI engine operating range is limited by high combustion peak pressure and engine noise. High combustion pressure can damage the engine during operation. To avoid engine damage, the rich limits have to define using various methods. Peak combustion pressure, rate of cylinder pressure rise was considered to determine rich limit of engine operating range. Knock probability was correlated with the rate of cylinder pressure rise as well as the peak combustion pressure.

  • The results of combustion performance test of fuel-rich gas generator(GG) using LOx and kerosene as propellant at design and off-design point are described. The parameters used in this analysis are the average exit temperature($T_{GG}$) and the characteristic velocity($C^{\ast}$). The average gas temperature at the exit of gas generator is found to be a function of propellant O/F ratio. For the gas generator having residence time of 4msec or more, the effect of flame residence time and combustion chamber pressure on the exit temperature is not significant. The exit characteristic velocity is found to be linearly proportional to the gas temperature at the exit of gas generator.

  • The characteristics of combustion and radiation heat transfer of an oxygen-enhanced diffusion flame was experimentally analyzed. An infrared radiation heat flux gauge was used to measure the thermal radiation of various types of flames with fuel, air and pure oxygen. And the Laser Induced Incandescence (LII) technique was applied to characterize the soot concentrations which mainly contribute to the continuum radiation from flame. The results show that an oxygen-enhanced inverse diffusion flame is very effective in increasing the thermal radiation compared to normal oxygen diffusion flame. This seems to be caused by overlapped heat release rate of double flame sheets formed in inverse flame and generation of higher intermediate soot in fuel rich zone of oxygen-fuel interface, which is desirable to increase continuum radiation. And the oxygen/methane reaction at slight fuel rich condition (ø=2) in oxygen-enhanced inverse flame was found to be more effective to generate the soot with moderate oxygen availability.
