A simplified thermal analysis method to evaluate the maximum temperature of the CANDU 37-element fuel bundle within a fuel basket in a given spent fuel dry storage canister has been presented along with the results of sample analyses performed to examine the parametric effects of the ambient conditions on the maximum fuel temperature within a canister. To solve the multi-dimensional heat transfer problem of the complex geometry of rod bundles within a canister where three modes of heat transfer are superimposed, the CANDU spent fuel bundles stored in the dry storage canister are first replaced by equivalent concentric fuel cylinders. The simplified axi-symmetric two-dimensional multi-mode heat transfer problem of the equivalent fuel cylinders is then analyzed with an existing computer code, HEATING5, using additional input data and heat transfer correlations. A comparison between the predicted temperature profile and the mock-up test results shows that the agreement is quite satisfactory.

The signal patterns of slosh noise produced by the fuel tank of a passenger vehicle are characterized by analyzing vehicle interior noise, fuel tank vibration, and near-field noise radiated from the fuel tank. This paper also shows the noise transfer path analysis results performed from the fuel tank to the vehicle inside. On top of them, physical index is described, demonstrating a good correlation with subjective feeling of slosh noise. It is essential to identify the main noise transfer paths for redesigning of the fuel tank system aiming at reducing slosh noise and also helpful to apply physical index in evaluating and reducing this noise. It is found that structure-borne path is the main root of slosh noise and a value reveals a good correlation with subjective feeling.
In this paper, the process of predicting efficient durability performance for vibration durability test of automobile parts using vibration test load on automobile fuel tank is presented. First of all, the common standard load that can be applied to the initial development process of the automobile was used for the fuel tank and the vulnerability of the fuel tank to the vibration fatigue load was identified through frequency response analysis. In addition, the vulnerability of the fuel tank was re-enacted through vibration durability test results, and the scale factor was applied to the standard load. In order to predict the vibration durability performance required for detailed design, vibration fatigue analysis was performed on the developed vehicle with the frequency of vibration severity equivalent to the durability test, and the vulnerability and life span of the fuel tank were identified through the process of applying weights to these selected standard loads, thereby reducing the test time of the development vehicle.

A transfer cask serves as the container for transporting and handling canisters loaded with spent nuclear fuels from light water reactors. This study focuses on a cylindrical transfer cask, standing at 5,300 mm with an external diameter of 2,170 mm, featuring impact limiters on the top and bottom sides. The base of the cask body has an openable/closable lid for loading canisters with storage modules. The transfer cask houses a canister containing spent nuclear fuels from lightweight reactors, serving as the confinement boundary while the cask itself lacks the confinement structure. The objective of this study was to conduct a structural analysis evaluation of the transfer cask, currently under development in Korea, ensuring its safety. This evaluation encompasses analyses of loads under normal, off-normal, and accident conditions, adhering to NUREG-2215. Structural integrity was assessed by comparing combined results for each load against stress limits. The results confirm that the transfer cask meets stress limits across normal, off-normal, and accident conditions, establishing its structural safety.

The jet pumps are widely used to transfer the fuel between the tanks in an aircraft fuel supply system. However detailed design procedures for determining the size of components of the jet pumps are not known so well. In this paper, the flow characteristics of the jet pump, which is applied in the fuel transfer system for the smart UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), were experimentally investigated using the acrylic jet pump model for the visualization of the internal flow. The pressure distributions within the jet pump were measured, and then the loss coefficients of each part were calculated. The effects of Reynolds number and the distances (S) between the exit of the primary nozzle and the mixing chamber entrance were investigated. In addition, cavitation phenomena were considered through the flow visualization inside the jet pump. As a conclusion from the experiment, the contraction shape of the primary nozzle has a strong effect on the loss coefficient of the nozzle and the cavitation occurrence. Cavitation starts around the nozzle exit, and then it propagates to the full flow fields of the jet pump.
A channel design which is closely related with the mass transport overpotential is one of the most important procedures to optimize the whole fuel cell performance. In this study, three dimensional results of a numerical study for gas distribution in channels of a molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) unit cell for a 1kW class stack was presented. The relationship between the fuel and air distribution in the anode and cathode channels of the unit cell and the electric performance was observed. A charge balance model in the electrodes and the electrolyte coupled with a heat transfer model and a fluid flow model in the porous electrodes and the channels was solved for the mass, momentum, energy, species and charge conservation. The electronic and ionic charge balance in the anode and cathode current feeders, the electrolyte and GDEs were solved for using Ohm's law, while Butler-Volmer charge transfer kinetics described the charge transfer current density. The material transport was described by the diffusion and convection equations and Navier-Stokes equations govern the flow in the open channel. It was assumed that heat is produced by the electrochemical reactions and joule heating due to the electrical currents.

A model for calculation of fuel temperature profile using binary gas mixture of Helium and Xenon for gap gas conductance is proposed here. In this model, the temperature profile of a fuel pencil from fuel centreline to fuel surface has been calculated by taking into account the dilution of Helium gas filled during fuel manufacturing due to accumulation of fission gas Xenon. In this model an explicit calculation of gap gas conductance of binary gas mixture of Helium and Xenon has been carried out. A computer code Fuel Characteristics Calculator (FCCAL) is developed for the model. The phenomena modelled by FCCAL takes into account heat conduction through the fuel pellet, heat transfer from pellet surface to the cladding through the gap gas and heat transfer from cladding to coolant. The binary noble gas mixture model used in FCCAL is an improvement over the parametric model of Lassmann and Pazdera. The results obtained from the code FCCAL is used for fuel temperature calculation in 3-D neutron diffusion solver for the coolant outlet temperature of the core at steady operation at full power. It is found that there is an improvement in calculation time without compromising accuracy with FCCAL.

This paper describes the system engineering approach for the heat transfer analysis of plus7 fuel rod for APR1400 using, a commercial software, ANSYS. The fuel rod is composed of fuel pellets, fill gas, end caps, plenum spring and cladding. The heat is transferred from the pellet outward by conduction through the pellet, fill gas and cladding and further by convection from the cladding surface to the coolant in the flow channel. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate the temperature and heat flux change from the fuel centerline to the cladding surface when having maximum fuel centerline temperature at 100% power. This phenomenon is modelled using the ANSYS FEM code and analyzed for steady state temperature distribution across the fuel pellet and clad and the results were compared to the standard values given in APR1400 SSAR. Specifically the applicability of commercial software in the evaluation of nuclear fuel temperature distribution has been accounted. It is note that special codes have been used for fuel rod mechanical analysis which calculates interrelated effects of temperature, pressure, cladding elastic and plastic behavior, fission gas release, and fuel densification and swelling under the time-varying irradiation conditions. To satisfactorily meet this objective we apply system engineering methodologies to formulate the process and allow for verification and validation of the results acquired. The close proximity of the results obtained validated the accuracy of the FEM analysis of the 2D axisymmetric model and 3D model. This result demonstrated the validity of commercial software instead of proprietary in-house code that is more costly to develop and maintain.

The fuel transfer characteristics of the jet pump between fuel tanks, which is applied in the smart UAV fuel supply system, were experimentally investigated. The operating conditions of the jet pump were setup to meet the engine requirement according to mission profile, and the jet pump performance was evaluated at those conditions. The pressure ratio and the efficiency of the jet pump were measured with the variation of flow ratio. In addition, the area ratio was taken into the consideration to examine the effect on the jet pump performance. From the evaluation results, the jet pump met the fundamental requirement to transfer fuel with the flow ratio of 2.23. In the case of the jet pump that is focused on the fuel transfer quantity rather than its efficiency, the flow ratio would be adjusted through the variation of area ratio of the jet pump within the permitted limit of pressure ratio.

Most of burning rate models used in hybrid combustion depend solely on oxidizer flux. But this empirical relation can not represent well the important effect of the thermo-chemical properties of solid fuel and thereby requires different value of empirical exponent and constant for each fuel considered. In this study, a new burning rate correlation was proposed using the mass transfer number(B number) which encompasses the thermochemistry effect of solid fuel and the aerodynamic effect caused by the combustion on the solid fuel surface where the effect of aerodynamic property in the mass transfer number was studied. The PMMA, PP, and PE were chosen as fuel, and gas oxygen as oxidizer. The new empirical burning rate expression depending on both the oxidizer flux and the mass transfer number was able to predict the burning rate of each fuel with just a single exponent value and constant, and it was found that the aerodynamic effect on the blowing effect did show a minor effect on the burning rate correlation.
