In this study, AP added propellant has been proposed as a method of enhancing the low specific impulse performance found for staged hybrid rocket engine. Experimental tests were carried out to analyze and evaluate the effect of AP added propellant on specific impulse performance as well as fuel-rich combustion characteristics in a staged hybrid rocket engine. Upper limit of AP content in propellant was set to be 15 wt% to maintain the hybrid rocket engine advantages. As a result, 15 wt% AP added propellant showed 3% higher specific impulse performance compared to 0 wt% AP added propellant. Moreover, AP addition proved to offer less injected oxidizer mass flow, less O/F variation, and less combustion pressure while producing fuel-rich gas of the same combustion temperature. Future studies will carry out more combustion tests with metal additives to further enhance specific impulse.

An optimal design of the gas generator for Liquid Rocket Engine (LRE) was conducted. A fuel-rich gas generator in open cycle turbopump system was designed for 10ton in thrust with RP-1/LOx propellant. The optimal design was done for maximizing specific impulse of thrust chamber with constraints of combustion temperature and for matching the power requirement of turbopump system. Design variables are total mass flow rate to gas generator, O/F ratio in gas generator, turbine injection angle, partial admission ratio, and turbine rotational speed. Results of optimal design provide length, diameter, and contraction ratio of gas generator. And the operational condition predicted by design code with resulting configuration was found to maximize the objective function and to meet the design constraints. The results of optimal design will be tested and verified with combustion experiments.

Multi-port HDPE and Paraffin firing tests are conducted for hybrid gas generator application of a ducted rocket in the low oxidizer mass flux range. A fuel rich gas of O/F ratio from 0.3 to 0.8, a typical O/F operating range of a ducted rocket gas generator, have been achieved with paraffin fuel implying that the hybrid system can be a potential candidate. It was also found that an almost constant O/F ratio regime exists under $35kg/m^2s$ of the oxidizer mass flux, opening a possibility for the paraffin fuel toward the VFDR gas generator application.
The Blow-off characteristics of LPG/air lean pre-mixed flames were experimentally investigated using a double and a multiple concentric coflow burners. Experiments were conducted to understand the effects of recirculation motion, thermal interaction between flames, and stratified flame configuration. Here, the stratified premixed flame is a "new concept" of a flame that sequentially contains fuel rich, stoichiometric, and fuel lean reaction zones in a flame. The blow-off from a lean premixed flame was significantly suppressed with recirculation motion. The recirculation motion by itself, however, was not sufficient to prevent the blow-off when the equivalence ratio became low. The existence of a inner premixed flame could also help to prevent the blow-off of lean premixed flame; however, the blow-off suppression effect was rather diminished by weakened recirculation motion with the presence of inner flame. The inner flame could be separated from an outer flame on a multiple concentric coflow burner, causing recirculation motion as well as thermal interaction between flames to become effective; therefore, the blow-off was further suppressed. The lean premixed flame could be stabilized with a fuel rich premixed flames that was produced with the supply of fuel through an inner nozzle. The penetration of lean premixed gas from outside into the fuel stream produced a lifted rich premixed flame. Chemiluminescence images of OH, CH, and $C_2$ radicals confirmed the structure of a stratified premixed flame. The stable premixed flames could be obtained at the very fuel lean condition by applying the stratified premixed flame concept.

In the development process of a fuel-rich gas generator using kerosene and LOx for a 30 tonf class liquid rocket engine, a heat damage occurred at the LOx post of swirl coaxial injectors used in the gas generator and the problem has been examined. To prevent the heat damage, injectors are redesigned to have an increased recess while maintaining internal mixing, which minimizes recirculation region to prevent anchoring of the flame in the recirculation region. The combustion test results of the sub-scale gas generator showed that this scheme can prevent heat damage of the LOx post in the swirl coaxial injectors of the fuel-rich gas generator.
The combustion instability was experimentally investigated in model gas turbine combustor with dual swirl burner. When such instability occurs, a strong coupling between pressure oscillation and unsteady heat release excites a self-sustained acoustic wave which results in a loud sound, and can even cause fatal damage to the combustor and entire system. In present study, to understand the combustion instability with a premixed mixture, the detailed periods of pressure and heat release data in unstable flame mode were investigated by various measurement methods at relatively rich condition and lean condition near flammable limits. Also, to prepare the utilization of synthetic natural gas (SNG) fuel in gas turbine system, an investigation was conducted using a simulated SNG including methane as a reference fuel to examine the effects of $H_2$ content on flame stability. These results provide that the instability due to flash-back behaviour like CIVB phenomenon occurred at rich condition, while the repetition of relighting and extinction caused the oscillation of lean condition near flammable limit. From the analysis of $H_2$ content effects, it is also confirmed that the instability frequency is proportional to the laminar burning velocity at both rich and lean condition.
The characteristics of combustion and emissions in multi-staged oil burner have been experimentally studied for the various range of equivalence ratios, drop sizes and fuel formulations. Malvern system was used to measure droplet size of fuel. Light fuel oil and light fuel oil doped with pyridine($C_5H _5N$) were used to investigate the effects on fuel NOx emission. The emissions of NO and CO in exhaust gas and the flame temperatures were measured by the gas analyzer and thennocouples. NOx emissions were increased by increasing the excess air ratio (range:$lambda=1.1-1.4$) or decreasing the SMD of droplet in single-staged burner. In comparison with the single-staged burner, the emission of NOx in multi-staged burner was reduced by 50% but CO emission was slightly increased. It is found that multi-staged burner has a good capability in reducing thermal NOx resulting from the distributed heat release rate and lower flame temperature in fuel-rich and fuel-lean combustion zone. Moreover, the fuel NOx emission of the multi-staged burner is lower than that of single-staged burner, because multi-staged burner has fuel rich zone where fuel N is converted to $N_2$ more than NO. In 3-staged burner, the percentage of each stage combustion air have strong influence on emission characteristics. It is also found that NOx emission can be reduced by decreasing inner and outer air percentage or increasing middle air flow rate and CO emission is vice versa.

A Fuel-rich preburner using kerosene fuel is operated in a non-equilibrium condition and a prediction of burnt-gas properties is not easy from a chemical equilibrium analysis. A premixed counter-flow flame analysis was conducted for the prediction of burnt-gas properties. JP10 was selected for a representative kerosene fuel and a non-equilibrium combustion analysis was accomplished in supercritical condition using UC San Diego reaction mechanism. The premixed counter-flow flame was assumed for stationary and stable flame, and the temperature result in present study was overestimated rather than the experimental results from Huzel. From the difference of the temperature result, other properties, heat capacity, specific heat ratio and molecular weight had some differences against the experimental results. Moreover, the present results was more similar to the experimental results than those of the equilibrium analysis.
Corrosion of nickel-base alloys (Hastelloy C-276, Inconel 625, and Inconel X-750) in $500^{\circ}C$, 25MPa supercritical water (with 10 wppb oxygen) was investigated to evaluate the suitability of these alloys for use in supercritical water reactors. Oxide scales formed on the samples were characterized by gravimetry, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results indicate that, during the 1000h exposure, a dense spinel oxide layer, mainly consisting of a fine Cr-rich inner layer ($NiCr_{2}O_{4}$) underneath a coarse Fe-rich outer layer ($NiFe_{2}O_{4}$), developed on each alloy. Besides general corrosion, nodular corrosion occurred on alloy 625 possibly resulting from local attack of ${\gamma}$" clusters in the matrix. The mass gains for all alloys were small, while alloy X -750 exhibited the highest oxidation rate, probably due to the absence of Mo.
The spray characteristics of the oxidizer-rich preburner are investigated. This system is generally operated at an oxidizerfuel mixture ratio of 50. The spray quality and mixing performance are very important for safe combustion. To know the spray characteristics of the oxidizer-rich preburner, we have designed various swirl injectors and measured droplet velocity and size by the PDPA system. The flow discharge coefficient of the fuel orifice is $0.12{\sim}0.21$, oxidizer orifice discharge coefficient is $0.16{\sim}0.28$. From the spray visualization, fuel nozzle spray angle is $15^{\circ}{\sim}25^{\circ}$, oxidizer nozzle spray angle is $65^{\circ}{\sim}85^{\circ}$ and combined spray angle is reduced $2^{\circ}{\sim}5^{\circ}$ compared to the oxidizer nozzle only case. From the PDPA measurement, droplet SMD is $175\;{\mu}m$ at 50 mm and $190\;{\mu}m$ at 100 mm of variant 1 combined case. The number concentration measurement revealed the reason of the droplet diameter increasement with distance. That is due to drop coalescence results from collision of drops which is occurred in dense sprays at a long distance from nozzle orifice exit.
