To increase the reliability of auto-ignition in CAI engines, the thermodynamic properties of intake flow is often controlled using recycled exhaust gases, called internal EGR. Because of the internal EGR influence on the overall thermodynamic properties and mixing quality of the gases that affect the subsequent combustion behavior, optimizing the intake and exhaust valve timing for the EGR is important to achieve the reliable auto-ignition and high thermal efficiency. In the present study, fully 3D numerical simulations were carried out to predict the mixing characteristics and flow field inside the cylinder as a function of valve timing. The 3D unsteady Eulerian-Lagrangian two-phase model was used to account for the interaction between the intake air and remaining internal EGR during the under-lap operation while varying three major parameters: the intake valve(IV) and exhaust valve(EV) timings and intake valve lift(IVL). Computational results showed that the largest EVC retardation, as in A6, yielded the optimal mixing of both EGR and fuel. The IV timing had little effect on the mixing quality. However, the IV timing variation caused backflow from the cylinder to the intake port. With respect to reduction of heat loss due to backflow, the case in B6 was considered to present the optimal operating condition. With the variation of the intake valve lift, the A1 case yielded the minimum amount of backflow. The best mixing was delivered when the lift height was at a minimum of 2 mm.

The Ministry of Environment will enforce air quality standards for $PM_{2.5}$ in 2015 because it affects human health as well as climate change and brings about other adverse effects. Until recently, even though a number of researches have reported $PM_{2.5}$ emissions according to sources, they have not precisely considered the emission factors correspondent to each source for emission estimation. For the sake of establishing $PM_{2.5}$ emission inventories, this study was undertaken using activity data of each source taken from CAPSS (Clean Air Policy Support System) multiplied by each emission factor of U.S. EPA Speciate or EEA CORINAIR. The 2008's total annual $PM_{2.5}$ emission (73.971 ton/yr) can be apportioned into five sources, such as fuel combustion facilities (62.2%), mobiles (33.8%), production processes (3.2%), fires (0.4%), and waste treatments (0.3%). The results show that fuel combustion facilities and mobiles are the predominant sources of $PM_{2.5}$, and they should be taken into great account in establishing $PM_{2.5}$ standards. In addition, it is necessary and urgent to develop effective measures for reduction of $PM_{2.5}$ emissions from those two main sources as well.
The vehicle lubricant has captured 35% of the total lubricant market while the engine oil possessed 77% of the vehicle lubricant market in Korea. The suitable quality management of circulating engine oil is thus required for the driver and engine protection. But, KS and synthetic engine oil products (containing over 30% synthetic oil) are exempt to any quality inspections under Petroleum and Alternative Fuel Business Act. In this study, our research group investigated the quality monitoring of 30 kinds of domestic distributing synthetic engine oils. Two kinds of the engine oil showed an off specification from the test results; one engine oil is an imported and the other is a KS synthetic one. Also, the pattern of engine oils were analyzed using SIMDIST (simulated distillation) and the most engine oils had a broad carbon number spectrum, which is a typical of mineral oils except several imported products. Thus, we concluded that relevant laws for the proper quality management of synthetic oils and KS products are needed to be established for preventing consumer's damages.

In this study, evaluating the system to reuse the sludge by improving such shortcomings as well as focusing on value using as fuel, instead of a simple process were assessed. Molding time required for 1ton of material is 31.8 ~ 115.0 minutes and power consumption per 1ton of material was estimated at 79.6kW and the shape of solid waste completed was in 22mm-long & wide square. It's 14mm, when converting solid waste in sectional area, which was acceptable to quality standard requiring 50mm or less. As a result of reviewing the quality of solid waste produced in this test, caloric value at sludge-waste mixing ration, 2 : 8 was 3,941kal/kg and, 8:2 was 4,924 kal/kg in maximum.

While increased use of motor cycles in the recent years for various demands could worsen air quality, only few studies have been conducted on estimation of emission factors and characterization of emissions from motorcycle. In this study, emissions from selected six models of motorcycle based on largest market share and production rate were investigated. To investigate gaseous and carbonaceous air pollutants, such as carbon monoxide (CO), total hydrocarbon (THC), nitrogen oxide ($NO_x$), elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC), total 124 motorcycles between 2003 and 2007 model year were tested with regulatory driving conditions, such as CVS-40 and CVS-47 mode. These motorcycles were further sub-categorized based on their displacement (< 50 cc, 50~150 cc, and $\geq$ 150 cc), type of stroke (2- and 4 strokes) and model year (2003~2005 and 2006~2007). Tested motorcycles with recent model year (2006~2007) exhibited less emissions of regulatory gaseous and carbonaceous air pollutants compared to old model year (2003~2005). Chemical analysis showed that CO present in highest concentration followed by THC and $NO_x$ for all tested motorcycles. Interestingly, two strokes motorcycle produced higher THC emission but less CO and $NO_x$ than those of four strokes. For all types of displacement and stroke, emission factors (gram per kilometer) of THC and CO except $NO_x$ with recent model year (2006~2007) showed decreased trend compared to old model year (2003~2005). In addition to this, due to mixed combustion between gasoline fuel and lubricant, two strokes motorcycle showed OC > EC emission trend.
The capital city of Himalayan Country Nepal, Kathmandu Valley is surrounded by consecutive high mountains, which limits the air distribution and mixing effects significantly. It in turn generates steady air flow pattern over a year except in monsoon season. The air shed in the Valley is easily trapped by the surrounded mountains and the inversion layer formulated as the cap. The $PM_{10}$ concentration was noticeably higher than the standard level (120 ${\mu}g/m^3$) in urban and suburban area of Kathmandu valley for all seasons except monsoon period. The Valley area experiences similar wind patterns (W, WWS, and S) for a year but the Easterly wind prevails only during the monsoon period. There was low and calm wind blows during the winter season. Because of this air flow structure, the air emission from various sources is accumulated within the valley air, high level of air pollution is frequently recorded with other air polluted cities over the world. In this Valley area, brick kilns are recognized as the major air pollution source followed by vehicles. Mostly Bull Trench Kiln (BKT), Hoffman Kiln and Vertical Shaft Brick Kiln (VSBK) are in operation for brick firing in Kathmandu valley where the fuels such as crushed coal, saw dust, and natural gas are used for processing bricks in this study. Tool for the Reduction and Assessment of Chemical and Other Environmental Impacts (TRACI) was used for screening and quantifying the potential impacts of air emission from firing fuels. The total Environmental Performance Score (EPS) was estimated and the EPS of coal was approximately 2.5 times higher than those of natural gas and saw dust. It is concluded that the crushed coal has more negative impact to the environment and human health than other fuel sources. Concerning the human health and environment point of view, alternative environment friendly firing fuel need to be used for brick industry in the kiln and the air pollution control devices also need to be applied for minimizing the air emissions from the kilns.

Hydrogen as a high-quality and clean energy carrier has attracted renewed and ever-increasing attention around the world in recent years, mainly due to developments in fuel cells and environmental pressures including climate change issues. In this processes for hydrogen production from fossil fuels, separation and purification is a critical technology. $(Ni_{60}-Nb_{40})_{95}-Pd_5$ alloy ingots were prepared by arc-melting the mixture of pure metals in an Ar atmosphere. Melt-spun ribbons were produced by the single-roller melt-spinning technique in an Ar atmosphere. Amorphous structure and thermal behavior were characterized by XRD and DSC. The permeability of the $(Ni_{60}-Nb_{40})_{95}-Pd_5$ amorphous alloy membrane was characterized by hydrogen permeation experiments in the temperature range 623 to 773 K and pressure of 2 bars. The maximum hydrogen permeability was $3.54{\times}10^{-9}[mol{\cdot}m^{-1}s^{-1}{\cdot}pa^{-1/2}]$ at 773 K for the $(Ni_{60}-Nb_{40})_{95}-Pd_5$ amorphous alloy.
An ICP-AES system directly connected with a separation column was used in order to determine the trace elements in $UO_2$ powder promptly and reduce the volume of the waste solution. The outlet of a separation column, which was filled with Teflon powder ($330\;{\mu}m$) coated with tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) as extractant, was directly connected with sample injection tube of ICP-AES. Eleven elements including molybdenum in $UO_2$ powder were separated and determined simultaneously. Recoveries of these elements were $91{\sim}110%$ and these results were agreed with those of solvent extraction methods. This method was applicable to quality control in manufacturing nuclear fuel.

In recent years, environmental damage to urban area becomes serious problem due to the exhaust emissions by increasing the number of vehicle . Especially, diesel particulate matters(DPM) are hazardous air pollutant s to human health and environment. The reduction technologies of exhaust emissions from diesel engines are improvement of engine combustion, fuel quality and development of diesel exhaust aftertreatment. In this study, a diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC) that is one of diesel exhaust aftertreatments was made for performance evaluation . It was tested for NA and turbocharged engine by D-13 mode that currently be used for regulation driving test mode in Korea Scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) was used for the analysis of the particle size distribution with and w/o DOC. As the results , for NA and tubochartged engine, CO, THC, DPM was respectively reduced 85.7, 40.7,3.3% and 79.1, 53.1, 11.6% by DOC. Test results of particle size distribution was showed that particle number is 107 ~108per ㎤ , 2 $\times$105 ~5$\times$105$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ for weight concentration and 100~200nm for particle mean size in diesel engine and there is no effect to reduce the particle concentration by the DOC.
As a continuation of Part I, which developed a design formula of the minimum corner radius (Rmin) for restraining tribological failures, Part II investigates design parameters such as material properties and contact force. As design examples, Al 7075-T651, SST 304 and HT-9 are chosen for the materials and 1, 10 and 100 kN are used for the forces. The results show that the difference in Rmin decreases as either the elastic modulus increases or the contact force decreases. Given the same material and force, the permissible Rmin decreases as the flat region increases and vice versa. Because the Rmin values obtained from the examples are very small, the dimensions of the corner radius normally designed in engineering structures are regarded acceptable. The von Mises stress evaluated for a typical example, which is far below the yield strength, confirms this interpretation. Nevertheless, the present work can provide a design criterion as well as a guideline for quality control in the manufacturing of, in particular, contact corners, which has not been attempted before to the best of the author’s knowledge. In addition, this paper considers the problem of a step that may be formed in the contact contour by using a similar approach. The result shows that no size of the step is permissible.
