The proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell system consisting of stack and balance of plant (BOP) was modeled in a MATLAB/Simulink environment. High-pressure operating (compressor type) and low-pressure operating (air blower type) fuel cell systems were considered. The effects of two main operating parameters (humidity and the pressure of the supplied gas) on the power distribution characteristics of BOP and the net system efficiency of the two systems mentioned above were compared and discussed. The simulation determines an optimum condition regarding parameters such as the cathode air pressure and the relative humidity for maximum net system efficiency for the operating fuel cell systems. This study contributes to get a basic insight into the fuel cell stack and BOP component sizing. Further research using muliobject variable optimization packages and the approach developed by this study can effectively contribute to an operating strategy for the practical use of fuel cell systems for vehicles.
The paper presents the rotordynamic performance measurements and model predictions of a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) air compressor supported on gas foil bearings (GFBs). The rotor has an impeller on one end and a thrust runner on the other end. The front (impeller side) and rear (thrust side) gas foil journal bearings (GFJBs) are located between the impeller and thrust runner to support the radial loads, and a pair of gas foil thrust bearings are located on both sides of the thrust runner to support the axial loads. The test GFJBs have a partial arc shim foil installed between the top foil and bump strip layers to enhance hydrodynamic pressure generation. During the rotordynamic performance tests, two sets of orthogonally installed eddy-current displacement sensors measure the rotor radial motions at the rotor impeller and thrust ends. A series of speed-up and coast-down tests to 100k rpm demonstrates the dominant synchronous (1X) rotor responses to imbalance masses without noticeable subsynchronous motions, which indicates a rotordynamically stable rotor-GFB system. Finite element analysis of the rotor determines the rotor free-free (bending) natural modes and frequencies well beyond the maximum rotating frequency. The predicted damped natural frequencies and damping ratios of the rotor-GFB system reveal rotordynamic stability over the speeds of interest. The imbalance response predictions show that the predicted critical speeds and rotor amplitudes strongly agree with the test measurements, thus validating the developed rotordynamic model.
In operating the underwater engines such as encountered in exploring submarines, the dumping of the exhaust gas out of the engine requires a large portion of the total power, frequently amounting to 25-30% of the power generated. This unfavorable circumstance can be cured by liquefying the exhaust gas and storing it. In the present study, two liquefaction systems were simulated to enhance the overall efficiency; one is a closed cycle diesel engine and the other is a closed cycle LNG engine. The liquefied natural gas (LNG) is chosen as a fuel, not only because its use is economical but also because its cold energy can be utilized within the liquefaction system. Since a mixture of oxygen and carbon dioxide is used as an oxidizer, liquefying carbon dioxide is of major concern in this study. For further improving this system, the intercooling of the compressor is devised. The necessary power consumed for the liquefying system is examined in terms of the related properties such as pressure and temperature of the carbon dioxide vessel as a function of the amount of the exhaust gas which enters the compressor. The present study was successful to show that much gain in the power and reduction of the vessel pressure could be achieved in the case of the closed cycle LNG engine. The compression power of exhaust gas were observed remarkably lower, typically only 6.3% for the closed cycle diesel engine and 3.4% for the closed cycle LNG engine respectively, out of net engine power. For practicality, a design -purpose map of the operating parameters of the liquefaction systems was also presented.
Present paper describes on/off design performance of a 50KW turbogenerator gas turbine engine for hybrid vehicle application. For optimum design point selection, relevant parameter study is carried out. The turbogenerator gas turbine engine for a hybrid vehicle is expected to be designed for maximum fuel economy, ultra low emissions, and very low cost. Compressor, combustor, turbine, and permanent-magnet generator will be mounted on a single high speed (82,000 rpm) shaft that will be supported on air bearings. As the generator is built into the shaft, gearbox and other moving parts become unnecessary and thus will increase the system's reliability and reduce the manufacturing cost. The engine has a radial compressor and turbine with design point pressure ratio of 4.0. This pressure ratio was set based on calculation of specific fuel consumption and specific power variation with pressure ratio. For the given turbine inlet temperature, a rather conservative value of $1100^\circK$ was selected. Designed mass flow rate was 0.5 kg/sec. Parametric study of the cycle indicates that specific work and efficiency increase at a given pressure ratio and turbine inlet temperature. Off design analysis shows that the gas turbine system reaches self operating condition at N/$N_{DP}$ = 0.53. Bleeding air for turbine stator cooling is omitted considering low TIT and for a simple geometric structure. Various engine performance simulations including, ambient temperature influence, surging at part load condition. Transient analysis were performed to secure the optimum engine operating characteristics. Surge margin throughout the performance analysis were maintained to be over 80% approximately. Validation of present results are yet to be seen as the performance tests are scheduled by the end of 1998 for comparison.

Design practice has been made on an oil-less scroll air compressor as an air supply device for a 2 kW fuel cell system where air pressure of 2 bar and flow rate of 120 liter/min are required. Basic structure of the scroll compressor includes double-sided scroll wrap for the orbiting scroll driven by two crankshafts connected to each other by a timing belt. These features can eliminate thrust surface which otherwise would produce frictional heat and jeopardize reliable operation of the orbiting scroll and the scroll element's deformation as well. This study focuses on optimum scroll wrap design; orbiting radius has been chosen as an independent design parameter. As the orbiting radius changes, scroll sizes such as scroll base plate and discharge port diameters change accordingly. Gas compression-related losses and mechanical loss also change with the orbiting radius. With a scroll base plate diameter of 120mm at most and discharge port of at least 10mm, the orbiting radius should be within the range of 2.5-4.0mm. With this range of the orbiting radius, it was estimated by performance analysis that the compressor efficiency reached to a maximum of ${\eta}_c$=96% at the orbiting radius of $r_s$=3.5mm for the scroll wrap height-to-thickness ratio of h/t=5.
This work describes analysis on the effect of inlet air cooling by the cold energy of liquefied natural gas(LNG) on the performance of gas turbines. Gas turbine off-design analysis program to simulate the influence of compressor inlet temperature variation is prepared and an inlet air cooler is modeled. It is shown that the degree of power augmentation is much affected by the humidity of inlet air. If the humidity is low enough, that is the water content of the air does not condense, the temperature drop amounts to $18^{\circ}C$, which corresponds to more than 12% power increase, in case of a $1350^{\circ}C$ class gas turbine with methane as the fuel. Even with 60% humidity, about 8% power increase is possible. It is found that even though the fuel contains as much as 20% ethane in addition to methane, the power improvement does not change considerably. It is observed that if the humidity is not too high, the current system is feasible oven with conceivable air pressure loss at the inlet air cooler.
This paper proposes a novel cooling system for hydrogen fuel cell cooling systems by integrating heat pump technology to enhance operational efficiency. The study analyzed the cooling efficiency of the fuel cell cooling system. With the increasing focus on eco-friendly vehicle technologies to address environmental concerns and global warming, the transportation sector, a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, needs technological enhancements for better efficiency. The proposed cooling system was modeled through 1-D simulations. The analysis results of parameters such as thermal balance, temperature, and pressure of each component confirmed the stable operation of the system. By examining variations in the cooling system's flow rate, compressor RPM, and the Coefficient of Performance (COP) based on different refrigerants, initial research was conducted to derive optimal operating conditions and parameter values.
Spray visualization of a vaporizer fuel injection system of a micro turbo jet engine was experimentally studied. The fuel heating by combustion was simulated by the high pressure steam generator and combustor inlet air from the centrifugal compressor was simulated by compressed air stored in the high pressure air tank. Spray visualization was performed with single vaporizer, and then six vaporizers which are same number of micro turbojet engine were used. As a results, the spray characteristics of the vaporizer were understood with pressure difference of the combustor inlet air and the fuel supply pressure. Spray angles with three types of vaporizer configuration were measured. In the results, guide vane configuration has a wider spray angle than the straight tube and smooth curve tube with a swirler, so it is expected that the fuel will be effectively distributed inside the combustor flame tube.
